Program C Apríl 2012 Apríl V Kine Lumière KINO SLOVENSKÉHO FILMOVÉHO ÚSTAVU ŠPITÁLSKA UL. 4 BRATISLAVA PROGRAM c APRÍL 2012 Apríl v Kine Lumière 4x Aki Kaurismäki počiatkov. Svedčí o tom množstvom filmov o požiarnych zásahoch, zániku Pompejí a pod. Tvorbu výnimočného fínskeho režiséra Akiho Kaurismäkiho pripomenie Febiofest 2012 v samo- Ide o filmy postavené na efektných, šokujúcich zobrazeniach, narábajúcich s divákovou súlad- stanej profilovej sekcii. Následne v priebehu apríla bude možné v Kine Lumière vidieť výber nosťou strachu a fascinácie. Tieto filmy majú samozrejme aj dnes viac či menej vydarených z jeho štylizovaných a výtvarne ladených trpkých tragikomédií plných sympatických outsiderov pokračovateľov. a stroskotancov z okraja spoločnosti. V roku 2011 vytvorili dvanásti stáli a štyria pridružení členovia EUNIC na Slovensku značku EuroFilmClub. Zobrazenie katastrofy a rozprávanie o jej priebehu bolo príťažlivé pre kinematografiu už od jej poďakovanie: Goetheho inštitút Bratislava Kino Ikon Plus výročia a osobnosti je pravideľná programová sekcia Kina Lumière (každý posledný štvrtok v mesiaci), ktorú dramatur- Herečka Zuzana Kronerová gicky pripravuje okruh redaktorov a autorov filmologického časopisu Kino-Ikon. Sekcia sa zame- Pri príležitosti 60. narodenín významnej slovenskej divadelnej a filmovej herečky Zuzany riava na najzaujímavejšie, nezriedka zabudnuté, diela svetových kinematografií z archívneho Kronerovej, ktorá sa teší obľube nielen na domácom Slovensku, ale aj v susednom Česku, fondu SFÚ. Posledný aprílový štvrtok sa môžete tešiť na Buñuelov film To je úsvit z roku 1955. si diváci Kina Lumière budú môcť pozrieť jej filmy Brehy nehy (F. Fenič, 1982) a Prežiť svoj život (J. Švankmajer, 2010). Slnko v sieti 2012 Architekt František Lipták Pri príležitosti slávnostného odovzdávania národných filmových cien Slnko v sieti (17. 4. 2012) Architekt niekoľkých porevolučných slovenských filmov František Lipták v apríli oslavuje svoje za roky 2010 – 2011 Kino Lumière poskytne rekapituláciu všetkých dlhometrážnych hraných 50. narodeniny. Z radu filmov, na ktorom úzko spolupracoval s režisérom Martinom Šulíkom, filmov, ktoré na základe hlasovania členov Slovenskej filmovej a televíznej akadémie získali nom- mu Kino Lumière zagratuluje projekciou filmu Slnečný štát (2005). inácie na ocenenie v niektorej z kategórií. I was reminded of such by a communication that came my way from AMPAS (the Oscar® people) listing nine categories’ shortlists of potential nominees. Now, they’ve been doing that shortlist thing with Foreign Language films for quite some time – there’s a lot of films out there in the world, it would be rather too much for the Academy members to have to watch them all! – but, to my knowledge, they’ve not before done it with any other category. It may be it’s for the same reason of sheer volume as above, but I guess what it also does is allows a greater number of films a reason to mention their Academy Award status in their advertising. I can see it now, “Academy Award Nomination shortlisted…” written on the poster. Where will it all end I wonder, “Academy Award Nomination eligible…”? As luck would have [nothing to do with] it, one of the films on the Foreign Language short list – which at this point in time seems the overwhelming favourite – is Bong Joon Ho’s utterly brilliant Parasite, which takes its place alongside a programme of films that is simplythe best line-up of new cinema I’ve seen in a long time. There’s not just the aforementioned South Korean masterpiece, there’s Sam Mendes’ extraordinary ‘one-take’ wonder 1917 (google ‘1917 behind the scenes featurette’ and prepare to simply have to see this film); Taika (‘Wilderpeople’) Waititi’s WWII, Nazi Germany-set, Jojo Rabbit; Armando Iannucci’s breathless Dickens, The Personal History of David Copperfield; Robert Egger’s uniquely bonkers, fog-bound The Lighthouse; Kidman, Robbie and Theron taking on the Fox News patriarchy in Bombshell; and to cap it all off, and possibly the best of the lot, Céline Sciamma’sexquisite Portrait of a Lady on Fire.

However, going forward on that road would demand skipping out on the picture next. What would we have then-- a shadow? I have to admit that deep in my subconscious, there might have been a hope that this step would make me seem normal, too.     Readymades, Rejects and the Ready-to-Hand: Found Objects in the Films of Aki Kaurismäki LAWRENCE D. SMITH ABSTRACT: This article considers the role of found objects in the work of Finnish film maker Aki Kaurismäki. Acknowledging the legacy of such objects in 20th-century art and performance inaugurated by the “readymades” of Marcel Duchamp and Dadaism, this article focuses on the concept of Zuhandenheit (ready-to-hand), the meaningful employment of objects in relation to living in the world. Kaurismäki’s use of found objects, both within the diegesis of various films and in the making of the films themselves, is compared to the existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger, specifically in relation to that philosopher’s concerns with how human beings “dwell” in post-World War II Europe. Kaurismäki has many connections with mid-century existentialism, and his creative employment of found objects in constructing his films creates a distinct cinematic realm frequently called “Aki-” or “Kaurismäki-land.” Found objects prove to be indispensable in creating the distinctive style of the films, serve as plot elements, furnish the mise-en-scène, provide material links between the various films, and, as in Zuhandenheit, are utilized to address Kaurismäki’s fundamental concerns with dwelling in the real world, as well as in Aki-land. RÉSUMÉ: Cet article aborde le rôle des objets trouvés dans l’oeuvre du cinéaste finlandais Aki Kaurismäki. L’utilisation que fait Aki Kaurismäki des objets trouvés est comparé aux objets « tout faits » de Marcel Duchamp et aux performances dadaïstes, ainsi qu’à la phénoménologie existentielle de Martin Heidegger, plus précisément à son idée de « l’habitation » et à son concept de la Zuhandenheit (être à-portée-de-la-main), l’usage significatif d’objets reliés à la vie dans le monde.

    Introduction Thomas Austin The cover image for this book, taken from Mies vailla menneisyyttä (The Man without a Past, 2002), captures the arresting moment when the protagonist M (Markku Peltola), hav- ing been violently beaten and robbed, then pronounced dead by a doctor, rises from his hospital bed to resume his life, but as a homeless amnesiac. By the end of the film, this penniless Lazarus has found a place to live in a marginal but supportive community, a ro- mantic partner, and a job as manager of a rock band. Like many of Aki Kaurismäki’s films, The Man without a Past is a socially engaged work that complicates realist aesthetics, em- ploying a self-conscious and highly allusive style. It is both a political response to pressing issues of inequality and injustice in neoliberal Europe and a playful utopian fable. Over the past three decades, this distinct approach, centred on ludic interventions that are simulta- neously serious and comic, relayed in a style that combines mimetic and performative modes,1 referentiality and artifice, realism and anti-realism, has made Kaurismäki a vital auteur in European cinema. Yet his oeuvre, encompassing 17 feature films, two music documentaries, a television movie and numerous shorts, remains surprisingly under-re- searched in Anglophone scholarship.
