Cinema, as a cultural mass medium, harnesses the emotional power of film to bring together the diversity of Europe and evokes the multifaceted, ever-changing nature of our European identity. Culture and film, as a cultural mass medium, are keys to unlocking dialogue between communities and overcoming these barriers. They are ideal tools to address stereotypes and prejudices, pave the way for intercultural dialogue and respond to the challenges facing our societies. This is exactly what the LUX FILM PRIZE is all about. With the LUX FILM PRIZE catalogue, we want to invite you to discover more than 100 important, poignant masterpieces that will take you on a journey through Europe and beyond. Look at your neighbour through the lens of emerging or already well-established directors. Use films to touch the hearts of European citizens and talk about the importance of being united in our diversity. See Europe in a different light. 7 LUX FILM PRIZE Most European films are only shown in the country where they were made and are rarely distributed across borders. The contrast is even bigger when we see that more than 60% of films released are European, but these are only watched by one third of the cinema audience. In this context, the European Parliament created the LUX FILM PRIZE in 2007. It has enhanced both the distribution of quality European films and the European debate. The 10 films in the LUX FILM PRIZE Official Selection unveiled at the Karlovy Vary Film Festival are the showcase of European cinema. In particular, the selection of the 3 final films in the LUX FILM PRIZE Competition, announced at the Venice Days, is closely followed by the film industry. Their distribution is facilitated by Parliament´s support with subtitling in the 24 official languages and the DCP [Digital Cinema Package] production per country. Moreover, the LUX FILM PRIZE winner is also adapted for the visually and hearing impaired, thus enlarging its audience and market potential. The LUX FILM PRIZE films are also disseminated via the field of education. Partners from different areas take advantage of the high quality film catalogue and also of the educational kits that are produced in all the Official EU languages for each competing film since 2012. The LUX FILM PRIZE filmography offers a wide variety of high quality films that echo the European Parliament´s agenda at legislative level. These films portraying life in Europe are a powerful communication tool to address the concerns of citizens from an array of angles, be it human, passionate, expert, realistic or political. 8 LUX FILM DAYS The LUX FILM DAYS are a unique cultural experience which transcends borders. From October until December, the LUX FILM DAYS create a temporary European Public Space in which European cinema lovers can watch and share 3 remarkable films, in the 28 Member States and in the 24 official European languages. The screenings usually take place in cooperation with film festivals, cinematheques and theatres. They are also often national previews. The three competing films are screened more than 220 times across Europe, accompanied by educational kits in the corresponding languages. Herein lies the uniqueness of the European Parliament’s initiative. The LUX FILM DAYS is an experience that can be shared across Europe no matter the language spoken. It creates a platform for belonging to a European public space, by discussing the same topic in the same place and at the same time. As part of the wider reflection, the audience is invited to express and share their views with other Europeans and to vote for their favourite film on luxprize.eu or on LUX FILM PRIZE Facebook page, awarding an AUDIENCE MENTION. 9 FILMOGRAPHY 19-12 OFFICIAL SELECTION COMPETITION 2019 COLD CASE HAMMARSKJÖLD COLD CASE HAMMARSKJÖLD DIRECTOR Mads Brügger DURATION 119’ YEAR OF RELEASE 2019 SCREENPLAY Mads Brügger CAST Mads Brügger, Göran Björkdahl CINEMATOGRAPHY Tore Vollan PRODUCERS Peter Engel, Bjarte Mørner Tveit, Andreas Rocksén MUSIC Kaada PRODUCTION Wingman Media ApS, Piraya Film AS, Laika Film & Television AB SALES AGENT DR Sales COUNTRIES Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Belgium ORIGINAL VERSIONS English, French, Bemba, Swedish, Danish SUBTITLES AND EDUCATIONAL KIT Bulgarian, Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hungarian, Irish, Italian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish COMMITTEES AFET, DROI, SEDE, LIBE, Danish director Mads Brügger and Swedish private investigator Göran Björkdahl are trying INTA to solve the mysterious death of Dag Hammarskjöld. The Innocents October 4-5 Mia Madre November 1-2 Dir: Anne Fontaine, France/Poland, 2016, 115 min. Dir: Nanni Moretti, Italy, 2015, 106 min. Katarzyna Dabrowska, Joanna Kulig, Agata Kulesza John Turturro, Nanni Moretti, Margherita Buy (French, Polish, and Russian with English Subtitles) (Italian and French with English subtitles and English) Warsaw, December 1945: the second World War is finally over and Acclaimed Italian auteur Nanni Moretti finds comedy and pathos in the Mathilde is treating the last of the French survivors of the German story of Margherita, a harried film director (Margherita Buy) trying to camps. When a panicked Benedictine nun appears at the clinic one night juggle the demands of her latest movie and a personal life in crisis. The begging Mathilde to follow her back to the convent, what she finds there star of her film, a charming but hammy American actor (John Turturro) is shocking: a holy sister about to give birth and several more in ad- imported for the production, initially presents nothing but headaches and vanced stages of pregnancy. A non-believer, Mathilde enters the sisters' her crew is close to mutiny. Away from the shoot, Margherita tries to hold her life together as her beloved mother's illness progresses, and her teen- fiercely private world, dictated by the rituals of their order and the strict age daughter grows ever more distant. A comedy-drama imbued with a Rev. Mother. Fearing the shame of exposure, the hostility of the new quiet sense of grief, Moretti illuminates the poignancy of human imper- anti-Catholic Communist government, and facing an unprecedented fection that is revealed when real life and art intersect.

  • Katyn Crime Had Been Committed
Katyń 80th anniversary a reminder of the crimes of Soviet Russia committed against Poles in 1937-1941 Created by: Andrzej Burghardt Zbigniew Koralewski Krzysztof Wąż © COPYRIGHT 2021 Coalition of Polish Americans Knowledge of the history of Poland, our country of origin, including the tragedies of which Katyn is a symbol, is an extremely important element of the sense of national community. For a numer of reasons, the history of Poland, especially the period of World War II, is distorted and deformed, also in the United States, so we must strive to learn the truth about these events. This presentation will acquaint you closer with: Polish Operation; secret protocol between Germany and Russia; Hitler's orders; methods of extermination of the Polish nation; the Katyn massacre; deportations of Poles to Siberia; hiding and falsifying the truth about the Katyn genocide and deportations to Siberia. Polish Operation by NKVD in 1937 „Polish Operation” was carried out by the NKVD (communist secret police) two years before the Second World War. It consisted in arresting of people of Polish origin who lived within the domain of Soviet Russia. According to the documents, almost 240,000 people were imprisoned at that time, of which almost half were murdered, the rest were sentenced to stay in labor camps or deported to Kazakhstan and Siberia. Victims of the NKVD „Polish Operation” The action covered all suspected of Polish origin. Poles were killed or deported for only one reason: because they were Poles. This served as a model for organizing later mass arrests, forced resettlements and murders such as in Katyn.

    1. Title: 13 Tzameti ISBN: 5060018488721 Sebastian, a young man, has decided to follow instructions intended for someone else, without knowing where they will take him. Something else he does not know is that Gerard Dorez, a cop on a knife-edge, is tailing him. When he reaches his destination, Sebastian falls into a degenerate, clandestine world of mental chaos behind closed doors in which men gamble on the lives of others men. 2. Title: 12 Angry Men ISBN: 5050070005172 Adapted from Reginald Rose's television play, this film marked the directorial debut of Sidney Lumet. At the end of a murder trial in New York City, the 12 jurors retire to consider their verdict. The man in the dock is a young Puerto Rican accused of killing his father, and eleven of the jurors do not hesitate in finding him guilty. However, one of the jurors (Henry Fonda), reluctant to send the youngster to his death without any debate, returns a vote of not guilty. From this single event, the jurors begin to re-evaluate the case, as they look at the murder - and themselves - in a fresh light. 3. Title: 12:08 East of Bucharest ISBN: n/a 12:08pm on the 22 December 1989 was the exact time of Ceausescu's fall from power in Romania. Sixteen years on, a provincial TV talk show decides to commemorate the event by asking local heroes to reminisce about their own contributions to the revolution. But securing suitable guests proves an unexpected challenge and the producer is left with two less than ideal participants - a drink addled history teacher and a retired and lonely sometime-Santa Claus grateful for the company.
