ISSUE STATEMENT: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) consists of nearly 800 member high schools and middle/junior high schools, both public and private. The WIAA overseas athletics in Washington and hosts 120 WIAA state championship events for the following sports and activities: , , bowling, , cross country, dance/drill, debate, drama, football, , , music, , & diving, soccer, , track & field, and . These programs provide students with valuable life skills and are an integral part of the total education process.

The City Council recognizes Shoreline student athletes from Kings’ School, Shorecrest High School, Shoreline Christian School, and Shorewood High School for their outstanding accomplishments and applauds them for competing in the (WIAA) State Championships and achieving 1st Place in the State of Washington in their respective sporting event.

Coaches and student athletes from Kings’ School, Shorecrest High School, Shoreline Christian School, and Shorewood High School will be on hand to accept the proclamation.

RECOMMENDATION

The Mayor should read the proclamation declaring June 13, 2016 as Shoreline State Champions Day in the City of Shoreline.

WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the outstanding abilities and talents of Shoreline Student Athletes and applaud them for competing in the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) State Championships; and

WHEREAS, the King’s School Boys Basketball team won the 1A State Championship with a decisive victory of 80-39 over the Freeman Boys Basketball Team on March 5, 2016, at the Yakima Valley Sundome. Teammembers are Dawson Porcello, Christian Lopez, Cole Mitchell, Koa Wilkins, Josh Frohardt, Johnny Foley, Davis Doerr, Zander Evans, Karson Dreher, Corey Kispert, Luke Wicks, Sam Echelbarger, Chewy Zevenbergen, Taylor Schoenfeld and Coaches Rick Skeen, Scott Boyce, Ryan Hoff, Adam Shildmyer, Dave Gerig, and Eddie Stinson; and

WHEREAS, the Shorecrest High School Girls Basketball Team won the 2A State Championship with a score of 49-43 over the Lynden Girls Basketball Team, on March 5, 2016, at the Yakima Valley Sundome. Teammembers are Laura Hoover, Amanda Kagarabi, Indira Ensign, Wurrie Njadoe, Ari Rantz, Jazlyn Owens, Julia Strand, Ronna Iverson, Shelby Gresch, Sheridan Stephenson, Uju Chibuogwu, and Head Coach Dori Monson and Assistant Coach Ed Baren; and

WHEREAS, the Shorecrest High School Hip Hop Team finished in 1st Place in the 2A State Championship, held March 26, 2016 at the Yakima Valley Sundome, and received the highest score out of 79 performances. Teammembers are Annie Cha, Keelie Frisk, Manahil Atiq, Alayna Moffat, Christian Burke, Clara Grantier, Jaimia Plancich, Jeffrey Freitag, Katie Wong, Keith Echague, Meagan Brooksbank, Mya Torres-Norton, Natalie Torres, Noel Basilio, Olivia Makennan, Rylie Roufs, Tommy Mac, Trinity Howell, Yori Bolonduro, and Coaches Rex Kinney and John Roque; and

WHEREAS, Shorecrest High School Swim Teammembers won the following State Championship Individual Events, February 19-20, 2016, at the King County Aquatics Center in Federal Way: Grant Heisey 200 yard freestyle and 500 yard freestyle; Gunnar Ruud 50 yard freestyle; James Buchanan 100 yard backstroke; and Samuel Devos, Daniel Zevenbergen, and Gunnar 200 yard freestyle relay. Coaching staff include Head Coach Scott Kelley, Assistant Coach Eric Joy, and Dive Coach Matt Merchel.

WHEREAS, the Shorecrest High School Girls Track Team won the 2A State Championship, held May 26-28, 2016, at Mt. Tahoma High School, with Shorecrest Senior Wurrie Njadoe winning the Long Jump, 100 and 200-meter races. Teammembers are Ronna Iverson, Isabella Berntsen, Lauren Block, Ami Njadoe, Lillian Visser, Amanda Kagarabi, Sydney Brandt, Sophia Viviano, Wurrie Njadoe, and Head Coach Brandon Christensen, and Assistants Brad Upton, Juli VanPelt, Sheri Goodwin and Michael Osborne; and

WHEREAS, Shorewood Junior Devan Kirk won the 800 meter race and Shorewood Senior Chris Diaz won the 110 meter high hurdles race at the State Track Championships, held May 26-28, 2016, at Mt. Tahoma High School. Coaching staff includes Paul Villanueva and Miles Mason; and

WHEREAS, Shoreline Christian School Senior Tyrell Bonner won the 1B 800, 1600 and 3,200 meter State Track Championships May 26-28, 2016, at Eastern Washington University. Coaching staff include Headcoach Tim Visser, and Assistant Coaches Nathan Weiford, Sarah Vermeer, and Colin Webb; and

WHEREAS, King’s School Caleb Perry won the 1A 100-meter State Track Championship on May 28, 2016 at Eastern Washington University. Coach staffing included Headcoach Daunte Gouge, and Assistant Coaches Jon Hubbell, Dan Blackmer, Brent Woodham, Lancelot Wright, Rod Wilcox, Tony Yakovich, Ryan Brown, and Alex Tilley; and

WHEREAS, the King’s School Boys Golf Team won the 1A State Championship for the 6th time, on May 25, 2016, at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane. Teammembers are Oscoar Chen, Karson Dreher, Grayson Giboney, Tyler Kim, JackRyan O'Neil, Tayden MacDonald, Isaac Wattum, Cole Critchlow, Alex Lundberg, Ryan Sumida, Cooper Wright, Jordan Yang, Dawson Porcello, Aden Paris, Mason Rosenau, and Director of Golf Myrle Carner, Headcoach Nelson Knight and Coach Taylor Ericikson; and

WHEREAS, King’s School Hannah Roh won the State Championship and the King’s Girls Golf Team won the 1A State Championship for the 3rd year in a row, on May 25, 2016, at Liberty Lake Golf Course in Spokane. Teammembers are Emily Burdett, Anna Doepp, Hannah Roh, Veronica James, Elle Mason, Tori Phillips, Bon Tangpoolcharoen, and Headcoach Simonette Sancho; and

WHEREAS, the Shorecrest High School Boys Tennis Doubles Team of Daniel Wacker and Faiz Khan won the 3A State Championship, on May 28, 2016, at the University of Washington’s Lloyd Nordstrom Tennis Center. Coaching staff include Varsity Coach Rob Mann and JV Coach Chad Frisk.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christopher Roberts, Mayor of the City of Shoreline, on behalf of the Shoreline City Council, recognize their accomplishments, dedication, hard work, perseverance and love of their sport, and hereby proclaim June 13, 2016 as

SHORELINE STATE CHAMPIONS DAY in the City of Shoreline.
