ISSUE STATEMENT: The Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) consists of nearly 800 member high schools and middle/junior high schools, both public and private. The WIAA oversees athletics in Washington and hosts 120 WIAA State Championship events for the following sports and activities: , , bowling, , cross country, dance/drill, debate, drama, football, , , music, , and diving, soccer, , track & field, and . These programs provide students with valuable life skills and are an integral part of the total education process.

The City Council recognizes Shoreline student athletes from Kings’ School, Shorecrest High School, Shoreline Christian School, and Shorewood High School for their outstanding accomplishments, and applauds them for competing in the WIAA State Championships and achieving 1st Place in their respective sporting event.

Coaches and student athletes from Kings’ School, Shorecrest High School, Shoreline Christian School, and Shorewood High School will be on hand to accept the proclamation.

RECOMMENDATION

The Mayor should read the proclamation declaring June 19, 2017 as Shoreline Athletic Champions Day in the City of Shoreline.

P R O C L A M A T I O N

WHEREAS, the City Council recognizes the outstanding abilities and talents of Shoreline Student Athletes and applauds them for competing in the 2017 Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) State Championships; and

WHEREAS, the Kings’ School Boys won the Class 1A State Boys Track & Field Championship, held May 25-27, 2017 at Eastern Washington University, winning the 4 x 100 and 4 x 400-meter relay races, Caleb Perry winning the 100 and 200-meter dash races, and Matt Jackson winning the 800-meter race. 4 x 100 Teammembers are Caleb Perry, Brennon Blevins, Silas Newby and Nii Engman; 4 x 400 Teammembers are Caleb Perry, Matt Jackson, Connor McElmurry, and Silas Newby. Coaches are Head Coach John Ricardi, and Assistant Coaches Rod Wilcox, Dan Blackmer, Malia Luquin, Ryan Brown, Jane Ricardi, and Calvin Fuji; and

WHEREAS, the Shorecrest High School Boy’s Bowling Team took 1st Place in the 52nd Annual Washington State Bowling Proprietors’ Association (WSBPA), State High School Varsity Bowling Championship at Lilac Lanes in Spokane, Washington held February 18-19, 2017. Teammembers are Sam Cox, Nick Marcink, Kasey Shibayam, John Malone, Jorik Thorkildsen, Collins Davis, and Team Advisor Veronica Cook; and

WHEREAS, Shoreline Christian School High School Senior Seth Eisses won the Class 1B Boys Track & Field 800-meter Championship held May 25-27, 2017 at Eastern Washington University. Coaches are Head Coach Tim Visser and Assistant Coach Nathan Weiford; and

WHEREAS, Shorewood High School Senior Devan Kirk won the Class 3A Boys Track & Field 800-meter Championship held May 25-27, 2017 at Mt. Tahoma High School. Coaches are Miles Mason and Paul Villanueva; and

WHEREAS, the Shorecrest High School Hip Hop Team finished in 1st Place in the 3A State Championship held March 24, 2017 at the Yakima Valley Sundome. Teammembers include Aeryn Borchers, Christian Burke, Emma Libby, Hannah Sy, Jeffrey Freitag, Katie Wong, Keith Echague, Matthew Olund, Meagan Horman, Mya Torres, Natalie Torres, Noel Basilio, Olivia MaKennan, Rylie Roufs, Savanna Molina, Shiuan Chu, Trinity Howell, and Xuenan Bai. Coaches are Head Coach Rex Kinney, Assistant Coach Zahra Masaoka, JV Team Coach Grace Masaoka, and Team Advisor Jacqui Drew;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Christopher Roberts, Mayor of the City of Shoreline, on behalf of the Shoreline City Council, recognize their accomplishments, dedication, hard work, perseverance, and love of their sport, and hereby proclaim June 19, 2017 as

SHORELINE STATE CHAMPIONS DAY

in the City of Shoreline.
