April 1st. at Shorecrest Theater Contact: Kelly Flynt at [email protected] FROM OUR ATTENDANCE/ATHLETICS SECRETARY: ATTENDANCE - A little reminder about the attendance policy at Kellogg. Students are expected to attend all regularly scheduled classes and assemblies. Students must remain on school grounds and in assigned supervised areas for the duration of the school day unless officially excused by the attendance office. Good school attendance improves academic achievement, classroom and school climate. Under the laws of the State of Washington and policies of the Shoreline School District School Board, all student absences and tardies are illegal except for the following: • Illness of the student • Death in the immediate family • Quarantine • Exceptionally urgent reasons • Religious Observances • Request by a parent for a student absence, providing such absence does not adversely affect the student’s educational progress. It is the responsibility of parents to inform the school when their child has an absence. Please call the attendance line or email the attendance secretary by 9AM if your student is absent for the day. TARDY/LATE ARRIVAL Students who arrive up to ten minutes late to school go directly to their first class of the day where they will be marked tardy. After the first ten minutes of school, students are to report to the attendance office and receive a pass to class indicating if the tardy is excused or the late arrival is an unexcused absence. EARLY DISMISSAL If it is necessary for a student to leave school before the end of the day, s/he is required to bring a written request to the attendance office before first period. You may also call or email the attendance line. Please keep in mind, it takes time for a student to gather their belongings and get to the office so we suggest you call ahead so we can have your student in the office at the appropriate time. Students must be MET IN THE OFFICE AND SIGNED out by the parent/guardian or emergency contacts. Remember on your emergency information form you are asked to give us your emergency contacts? These contacts are the only people other than guardians that can pick up your student at school for an early dismissal, appointment, emergency, disaster, etc. Also, if your student has a sibling that might need to pick them up, they must also be included on the emergency contact list as well. We also will ask for id at the time of pick-up to verify who you are. We do all of this for the safety of our students and we appreciate your support to ensure that this happens. As always, come by and update any information as needed – we are here to help! J From Nurse Kelley When to keep your child home from school: • FEVER of at least 100 º F as read under arm (axillary temp.) using a digital thermometer accompanied by one or more of the following: Diarrhea or vomiting Earache Headache Signs of irritability or confusion Sore throat Rash Fatigue that limits participation in daily activities • VOMITING: 2 or more occasions within the past 2 hours • DIARRHEA: 3 or more watery stools within the past 24 hours or any bloody stool • RASH (especially with fever or itching) • EYE DISCHARGE OR CONJUNCTIVITIS (PINKEYE): until clear or until 24 hours of antibiotic treatment • SICK APPEARANCE, NOT FEELING WELL, AND/OR NOT ABLE TO KEEP UP WITH SCHOOL ACTIVITIES • OPEN OR OOZING SORES, unless properly covered and 24 hours has passed since starting antibiotic treatment, ifantibiotic treatment is necessary. Students should be fever-free without fever reducing medication and no vomiting/diarrhea for 24 hours before returning to school. Please remember ALL medication, prescription AND over-the-counter, can only be given at school with a licensed healthcare provider’s medication order. The WIAA oversees athletics in Washington and hosts 120 WIAA State Championship events for the following sports and activities: baseball, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, dance/drill, debate, drama, football, golf, gymnastics, music, softball, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. These programs provide students with valuable life skills and are an integral part of the total education process. The City Council recognizes Shoreline student athletes from King’s School and Shorecrest High School, for their outstanding accomplishments, and applauds them for competing in the WIAA State Championships and achieving 1st Place in their respective sporting event. Coaches and student athletes from King’s School and Shorecrest High School will be on hand to accept the proclamation. RECOMMENDATION The Mayor should read the proclamation declaring June 11, 2018 as Shoreline Athletic Champions Day in the City of Shoreline. It was nice to see our hallways and classrooms filled with our families learning about how they can best support their student at home and experience their student’s school schedule. If you were unable to attend the event, please reach out to your student’s teachers for academic concerns/questions, or their counselor for any social/emotional or general school concerns. Your student will also be bringing home a green Canvas document that was distributed last night, for you to use to connect with our online grading system. We encourage all families to begin tracking their student’s success using Canvas, and checking the student school planner to ensure that they are recording the daily assignments in each class. We recommend setting aside a specific location in your home for your student to complete homework each night. Choosing one or two specific days each week to check in with their planner use, Canvas grades, and backpack organization is a great way to help support your students while allowing them to take ownership of their progress. Please let us know how we can support your student or family as they work to establish school routines and habits this year. Our Kellogg athletics are in full swing and having a great start to the season. We hope to see you out there cheering on our Knights.

Your generosity fits perfectly with our theme for December, which is Giving Selflessly. Watching our stage fill up with donated goods has been a daily reminder for us all of how we can work together to help out each other and our community. As Knights, we have also focused attention on the giving of our time, energy, thanks, goods, and spirit and how we can all have a positive impact on the life of those around us. I hope that your holiday season is full of this spirit of giving and gratitude. Winter break is a great time for your student and family to rest, relax and recharge. This change of pace allows everyone to reflect on the year so far and come back in January ready to finish off the semester strong. We also have a few important events coming up in January, so please mark your calendars and save these dates: January 10th: 6-7pm – Superintendent Rebecca Miner will be coming to Kellogg for her Informational Bond Presentation. Please come learn about the important upcoming bond for Shoreline Schools and have the opportunity to discuss the details of the bond. The WIAA oversees athletics in Washington and hosts 120 WIAA State Championship events for the following sports and activities: baseball, basketball, bowling, cheerleading, cross country, dance/drill, debate, drama, football, golf, gymnastics, music, softball, swimming and diving, soccer, tennis, track & field, volleyball and wrestling. These programs provide students with valuable life skills and are an integral part of the total education process. The City Council recognizes Shoreline student athletes from Kings’ School, Shorecrest High School, Shoreline Christian School, and Shorewood High School for their outstanding accomplishments, and applauds them for competing in the WIAA State Championships and achieving 1st Place in their respective sporting event. Coaches and student athletes from Kings’ School, Shorecrest High School, Shoreline Christian School, and Shorewood High School will be on hand to accept the proclamation.
