Atlases 9. References 1. Introduction The beginnings and growth of dialectology in the Netherlands and Flanders can only be discussed against the background of the situation in neighboring countries. In reaction to the Enlightenment, the Romantic period brought with it an interest in and apprecia- tion of prescientific culture and nostalgia for the past. More attention came to be paid to art, myths, fairy tales and the language of ordinary people past and present, as op- posed to the Enlightenment period interest in cultured standard language. The new focus was imported from the France of Rousseau and the Germany of Schiller. But later devel- opments in the Netherlands and Flanders did not take place in isolation either. Thus, the German linguist Georg Wenker and his French colleague Jules Gillie´ron were the unmistakable precursors of Dutch linguistic atlas projects, while the work of Jean Se´guy and of Hans Goebl served as models for dialectometry in our region. In section 2 of this chapter, we take a brief look at prescientific linguistic maps and dialect collections. In section 3, dialect surveys that have not been developed into linguis- tic atlases are discussed. -

journal of language contact 8 (2015) 70-90 brill.com/jlc Dutch Guiana Demographics and Living Conditions and the Emergence of Dutch Creoles during the First One Hundred Years, 1580–1675 Silvia Kouwenberg University of the West Indies, Mona [email protected] Abstract The first one hundred years of the Dutch presence on the “Wild Coast” of Guiana, beginning with exploratory voyages and establishment of trading networks, and cul- minating in the establishment of plantation societies in Berbice and Essequibo, forms the historical context for the emergence of the Dutch creole languages of Berbice and Essequibo. This article explores that historical backdrop, focusing on the early planta- tion colonies, their management, and the presence and roles of different linguistic groups: Amerindian, Dutch, African. Amerindians—both free and enslaved—formed a numerically dominant presence in the initial plantation phase; although they were soon to be outnumbered by enslaved Africans, they were present on and around the plantations throughout the history of these Dutch colonies. It is surprising, then, to note that Arawak-origin material in rather peripheral domains of the Berbice Dutch lexicon forms the sole evidence of an Amerindian presence during its formation. This contrasts sharply with the very central Eastern-Ijo derived contribution to basic lexi- con and bound morphology. On the Dutch side, given the dominance of the south- western provinces in the colonization of both Berbice and Essequibo, it is not surprising that Zeelandic Dutch characteristics can be recognized in many of the Dutch-derived forms. The marginal linguistic role played by Amerindians suggests that the dynamics of slavery determined the linguistic influence of the different groups historically pres- ent in the plantation society. -

In fact, they are also by themselves one of the best ways to describe a sentiment, despite the fact that other word classes such as nouns, verbs, adverbs or conjunctions can also be utilized for this purpose. The empirical part of this study focuses on a list of adjectives which were extracted from an annotated corpus. The corpus contains the part of speech tags of individual words and sentiment annotation on the adjective, sentence and comment level. Suffixes of Luxembourgish adjectives like -esch,-eg,-lech,-al,-el,-iv,-ent,-los,-bar and the prefix on- were explicitly investigated, especially by paying attention to their role in regards to building a model by applying classical machine learning techniques. The Timing of Nuclear Falls: Evidence from Dutch, West Frisian, Dutch Low Saxon, German Low Saxon, and High German
Laboratory Phonology 2015; 6(1): 1–52 Jörg Peters*, Judith Hanssen and Carlos Gussenhoven The timing of nuclear falls: Evidence from Dutch, West Frisian, Dutch Low Saxon, German Low Saxon, and High German Abstract: A reading experiment was designed to examine the effects of word boundaries and metrical structure on the temporal alignment of the accentual peak and the end of the fall in nuclear rising-falling accents. Participants were speakers of a number of closely related dialects and languages from the coastal area of the Netherlands and North-West Germany, covering Zeelandic Dutch, Hollandic Dutch, West Frisian, Dutch Low Saxon, German Low Saxon, and Northern High German. Our findings suggest that in no variety is the timing of the nuclear peak or the end of the fall systematically affected by the location of the final word boundary or that of the following stress. In most cases, the accentual peak was found to be stably aligned with the beginning of the nuclear accented syllable, while the end of the fall occurred at a fairly constant distance from the preceding F0 peak. These findings do not support a representation of the nuclear fall by a sequence of a high accentual tone and a ‘phrase accent’ that is secondarily associated to a post- nuclear stress. In addition, we found substantial cross-linguistic variation in the overall timing of the beginning and end of the fall. One component in this variation is a geographically gradient shift in the alignment of the pitch gesture. The Adaptation of MAIN to Luxembourgish
The adaptation of MAIN to Luxembourgish Constanze Weth University of Luxembourg Cyril Wealer University of Luxembourg This paper describes the addition of Luxembourgish to the language versions of MAIN, the adaption process and the use of MAIN in Luxembourg. A short description of Luxembourg’s multilingual society and trilingual school system as well as an overview of selected morphosyntactic and syntactic features of Luxembourgish introduce the Luxembourgish version of MAIN. 1 Introduction This chapter introduces briefly the addition of Luxembourgish to the language version of the Multilingual Assessment Instrument for Narratives (LITMUS-MAIN, hereafter MAIN; Gagarina et al., 2019). It describes the adaption process and the use of MAIN in Luxembourg. Due to intensive language contact of Luxembourgish to French, productive borrowing of French lexicon into Luxembourgish as well as lexical doublets, the Luxembourgish version will widen the empirical coverage of MAIN to a multilingual setting. Although intensive contact with German also exists, the productive borrowing from German is more difficult to identify as Luxembourgish is part of the West Germanic dialect continuum. 2 A short description of the Luxembourgish language Luxembourg is a small state (around 600,000 inhabitants) and bordered by France, Germany and Belgium. A distinct feature of Luxembourg is its high percentage of foreign residents. Around half of Luxembourg’s population (around 322,000) has the Luxembourgish citizenship (STATEC, 2019) and only around 40% of the primary school children grow up speaking Luxembourgish at home (Lenz & Heinz, 2018). Being a small state, Luxembourg puts forward ZAS Papers in Linguistics 64, 2020: 153 – 157 Constanze Weth & Cyril Wealer strong identity-forming elements to differentiate from the neighboring countries. -
