Newer fans beware....By JTull0FanI was looking forward to this book, which was delayed many times over the last couple of years, that probably made it more imperative that I finally get it. Telling a Tull fan that something new is out there but they can't have it is a brutal torture.....When it finally arrived in early Oct. I dug right in. I was very happy with the amount of interviews the author was able to include. I do love reading (and listening) to the first hand accounts of The Blades and The John Evan Band and the early tales of Tull by ex-band members. That said, when the author began filling in the blanks between interviews I began recognizing his quoting (word for word) from "The Story of Jethro Tull" a radio show done with Ian Anderson and Terry Ellis in 1975. -

Apart from standard unaccompanied works by Tōru Takemitsu and Kazuo Fukushima, other Japanese flute compositions have yet to establish a permanent place in the standard flute repertoire. The purpose of this document is to broaden awareness of Japanese flute compositions through the discussion, analysis, and evaluation of substantial flute sonatas by three important Japanese composers: Ikuma Dan (1924-2001), Hikaru Hayashi (1931- 2012), and Akira Tamba (b. 1932). A brief history of traditional Japanese flute music, a summary of Western influences in Japan’s musical development, and an overview of major Japanese flute compositions are included to provide historical and musical context for the composers and works in this document. Discussions on each composer’s background, flute works, and compositional style inform the following flute sonata analyses, which reveal the unique musical language and characteristics that qualify each work for inclusion in the standard flute repertoire. These analyses intend to increase awareness and performance of other Japanese flute compositions specifically and lesser- known repertoire generally. -

Geoff Munns ii Abstract This thesis explores the use of place in Van Morrison’s songwriting. The central argument is that he employs place in many of his songs at lyrical and musical levels, and that this use of place as a poetic and aural device both defines and distinguishes his work. This argument is widely supported by Van Morrison scholars and critics. The main research question is: What are the ways that Van Morrison employs the concept of place to explore the wider themes of his writing across his career from 1965 onwards? This question was reached from a critical analysis of Van Morrison’s songs and recordings. A position was taken up in the study that the songwriter’s lyrics might be closely read and appreciated as song texts, and this reading could offer important insights into the scope of his life and work as a songwriter. The analysis is best described as an analytical and interpretive approach, involving a simultaneous reading and listening to each song and examining them as speech acts. -

Nach recht bluesigen Anfängen in der Gründungsphase um 1968, als JETHRO TULL aus der John Evan Band und McGregor’s Engine hervorgegangen waren, entwickelten sie sich sehr schnell zu einer originellen Progressive-Rockband, die sich ganz selbstverständlich zwischen klassischen Einflüssen, Folk und Hardrock bewegte. Seit ihrem ersten Auftritt im Londoner Marquee-Club entstanden 30 Studio- und Live-Alben, die sich weltweit 60 Millionen Mal verkauften. JETHRO TULL tourten durch 54 Länder in aller Welt und gelten bis heute als einzige Rockband, die eine Querflöte als stilprägendes Element besitzt. IA: I'm very well, I've just been speaking repeatedly to a young lady, I mean quite a young lady from apparently on a phone number that's calling for the last 10 minutes. (laughs) Q: Oh wow. IA: And finally had to explain what I was trying to do and that her mom looked up your telephone number and I'd got the, well, whoever gave me the phone number had got it wrong. So somewhere out there in a suburb not too far from you is a young lady who is very bemused by the fact that some strange English person from a rock band called Jethro Tull, which she'd obviously never heard, (laughs) trying to reach her to talk to her about our forthcoming tour. Q: Gee, would've been kind of exciting if you had reached a fan, you know, and then somebody was really thrilled and kept you on the phone. IA: Actually, I think the girl had heard of us, but when she said to her mom, she said, "What's that, a delivery service?"
