VÖ-Datum: 25.10.2013 Mit dem charismatischen Flötisten Ian Anderson als Frontmann sind JETHRO TULL bis heute eine Ausnahme- Erscheinung in der Rockszene. Nach recht bluesigen Anfängen in der Gründungsphase um 1968, als JETHRO TULL aus der John Evan Band und McGregor’s Engine hervorgegangen waren, entwickelten sie sich sehr schnell zu einer originellen Progressive-Rockband, die sich ganz selbstverständlich zwischen klassischen Einflüssen, Folk und Hardrock bewegte. Seit ihrem ersten Auftritt im Londoner Marquee-Club entstanden 30 Studio- und Live-Alben, die sich weltweit 60 Millionen Mal verkauften. JETHRO TULL tourten durch 54 Länder in aller Welt und gelten bis heute als einzige Rockband, die eine Querflöte als stilprägendes Element besitzt. Nach Thick As A Brick erscheint nun das 1970er Album Benefit in der Collector’s Edition mit zusätzlichen raren Tracks, Single-Versionen und Radiomitschnitten. Nachdem JETHRO TULL im Jahre 1969 drei US-Tourneen durchgezogen hatten, die für ihren Durchbruch jenseits des Atlantiks sorgten, gingen Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, Clive Bunker, Glenn Cornick und John Evan mit Producer Terry Ellis im Dezember 1969 und Januar 1970 ins Studio, um ihr drittes Album Benefit aufzunehmen, das sich rockiger denn je gab. Es erreichte Platz 3 in England und Platz 7 in den USA und führte JETHRO TULL auf das Isle of Wight-Festival, wo die Band vor mehr als einer halben Million Menschen auftrat. John Evans, der bei den Aufnahmen als Gastmusiker geführt wurde, blieb als festes Mitglied in der Band, Jeffrey Hammond- Hammond, der auf einigen Songs bereits mitspielt, übernahm ab 1971 die Stelle des Bassisten. Für die Benefit Collector’s Edition wurde das Album von Produzent Steven Wilson neu abgemischt und von Ian Anderson persönlich autorisiert. CD 1 enthält das komplette Album plus fünf Bonustracks: Singing All Day, Sweet Dreams, 17 und Teacher, letzteres je in der UK- und US-Single-Version. CD 2 besteht aus insgesamt 16 raren und unveröffentlichten Tracks, die im Umfeld der Aufnahmen und der nachfolgenden Promo-Aktivitäten entstanden. Soundmäßiges Highlight ist die Audio-DVD, die einen Surroundmix in Dolby Digital 5.1 und 96/24-Auflösung bietet. Zusätzlich ist das Album auf der DVD in der jeweiligen UK- und US-Version enthalten, die seinerzeit mit verschiedenen Tracklistings erschienen (Audio only!). Zur Collector’s Edition gehört außerdem ein Booklet mit einem 8000 Worte umfassenden Essay von Martin Webb, außerdem Transkriptionen von Interviews mit den Bandmitgliedern und einer Auswahl von Fotos, die selten oder nie veröffentlicht wurden. Eine 180g schwere Vinyl-Ausgabe der UK-Fassung von Benefit im neuen Mix von Wilson erscheint zeitgleich mit der Collector’s Edition. I was very happy with the amount of interviews the author was able to include. I do love reading (and listening) to the first hand accounts of The Blades and The John Evan Band and the early tales of Tull by ex-band members. That said, when the author began filling in the blanks between interviews I began recognizing his quoting (word for word) from "The Story of Jethro Tull" a radio show done with Ian Anderson and Terry Ellis in 1975.

Auf ihrem vierten Album bewiesen JETHRO TULL nicht nur einen kritischen Blick auf die Menschen, die Religion und andere fundamentale Themen, sie ließen mit dem legendären Cover durchaus auch ihren Sinn für Humor und Ironie durchblicken. Im März 1971 erschien Aqualung, eines der besten und legendärsten Alben der TULL, das sich über 7 Millionen Mal verkaufte und in Deutschland seinerzeit Platz 5 der Albumcharts erreichte. Neben dem Titelsong findet man auf dem Album auch die Single Hymn 43 und den Track Locomotive Breath, der zu den größten Erfolgen der Band zählt.     Jethro Tull – Aqualung (Reissue, 40th Anniversary Adapted Edition) (2CD/2DVD, Medienbuch, Chrysalis Records/Warner Music, 1971/2016) Tusch und Vorhang auf für die nächste Veröffentlichung im Zuge der famosen und vermutlich endgültigen Reissue-Reihe klassischer Jethro- Tull-Alben als Medienbücher, unter anderem mit kompletten Remix-Versionen von Steven Wilson. Ein Rückblick: Bisher verlief das Ganze wunderbar chronologisch geordnet, analog zur Reihenfolge der einstigen Erstveröffentlichungen: Auf „Thick as a Brick“ (von 1972) folgten „A Passion Play“ (1973), „Warchild“ (1974), „Minstrel in the Gallery“ (1975) und zuletzt „Too Old to Rock ’n’ Roll: Too Young to Die!“ (1976). Der rezensierende Tull-Junkie rieb die Hände und leckte sich voller Vorfreude die Lippen: Jetzt also müsste – endlich! – mit „Songs from the Wood“ der Auftakt zur heiß ersehnten frisch aufgebrezelten Feld-, Wald- und Wiesen-Trilogie kommen, zu der auch „Heavy Horses“ und „Stormwatch“ zählen. Zu jenen drei Alben also, auf denen Ian Anderson Ende der Siebzigerjahre Folk, Rock und eine genau richtige Prise Prog aufs Allerfeinste und bis heute unerreicht gut miteinander vermengte. Merke: Die Tullies warendie Folkrock-Band schlechthin. Aber ach, was schneit stattdessen ins Haus? „Aqualung“. Nochmal. Schon wieder! Und nur in Nuancen anders bestückt, als die 2011 ebenfalls bereits mit Wilson-Remixen versehene „40th Anniversary“-Jubiläumsausgabe, über deren Sinn oder Unsinn von der traumhaften Aufmachung mal abgesehen kontroverse Diskussionen entbrannten. Zum Album selbst muss man nicht mehr allzu viele Worte verlieren. „Aqualung“ mit seinem ikonischen Cover gilt als Meilenstein der Rockgeschichte, für Jethro Tull geriet es 1971 zum kommerziellen Big Bang. Die Band trat hier erstmals mit Bassist Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond sowie mit Keyboarder John Evan als festem Mitglied an, für Gründungsmitglied und Schlagzeuger Clive Bunker war es der Ausstand, seinen Part übernahm später Barriemore Barlow.
