ALBUM FACTS Genre:

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Illinois, US Instrumental in the development of jazz, Miles Davis is considered one of the top musicians of his era. Born in Illinois in 1926, he traveled at age 18 to City to pursue music. Throughout his life, he was at the helm of a changing concept of jazz.In carrying out what always seemed like a mission, Miles Dewey Davis III – musician, , arranger, producer, and band leader – was always in the right place at the right time, another defining aspect ofcool. Born in Alton, Illinois, and raised in East St. Louis, where his father was a dentist, Miles was given his first trumpet at age 13. A child prodigy, his mastery of the instrument accelerated as he came under the spell of older jazzmen Clark Terry, , , Billy Eckstine, and others who passed through. He accepted admission to the Juilliard School in 1944, but it was a ruse to get to New York and hook up with Bird and Diz. Miles was 18.Cool.Within a year, he accomplished his goal. He can be heard on sessions led by Parker that were released on Savoy in 1945 (with ), ’46 (with ), ’47 (with Duke Jordan and .J. Johnson), and ’48 (with John Lewis). In 1947, the Miles Davis All-Stars (with Bird, Roach, Lewis, and Nelson Boyd) debuted on Savoy. His years on 52nd Street during the last half of the 1940s brought him into the bop orbit of musicians whose legends he would share before he was 25 years old.At the turn of the decade into 1950, as Miles led his first small groups, an association with Gerry Mulligan and arranger Gil Evans ushered inThe (Capitol), a movement that challenged the dominance of and hard-bop. Miles’ subsequent record dates as leader in the early ’50s (on Blue Note, then Prestige) helped introduce Sonny Rollins, Jackie McLean, Horace Silver, and Percy Heath, among many others, establishing Miles’ role as the premier jazz talent scout for the rest of his career. An historic set at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1955 resulted in George Avakian signing Miles to Columbia Records, and led to the form•a•tion of his so-called “first great quintet,” featuring , Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones (the’Round About Midnightsessions). Miles’ 30 years at Columbia was one of the longest exclusive signings in the history of jazz, and one that spanned at least a half-dozen distinct generations of changes in the music – virtually all of which were anticipated or led by Miles or his former sidemen.Over the course of those 30 years, service with Miles became animprimaturfor ’s Who of jazzmen.Kind Of Blue, undisputedly thecoolestjazz ever recorded, was done in 1959 with the second edition of Miles’ “first great quintet” – principally Coltrane, Chambers, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, and Jimmy Cobb – who stayed together until 1961.After several intermediate groups (which featured such giants as Hank Mobley, Wynton Kelly, Victor Feldman, and George Coleman), Miles’ “second great quintet” slowly coalesced over 1963-64, into the lineup of , Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and Tony Williams (who was 17 years old when he joined Miles). They recorded with producer Teo Macero and toured around the world together until 1968, achieving artistic and commercial success that was unprecedented in modern jazz.1968 was a cataclysmic year of sea change for Miles and for America, a year of upheaval – the escalation of the war in southeast , the assassinations of Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy, and the rise of the Black Power movement were among the factors that pushed Miles’ music toward a more insistent electric (amplified) pulse. At the same time, Miles dug the triple-whammy he heard in the music of James Brown, Jimi Hendrix, and Sly Stone. What began in 1968 with Miles’ quintet quietly adopting

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Television Packaging Specs: Single DVD; Running Time: 148 minutes Description:

SIX OF RICKLES’ FAVORITE EPISODES FROM SEASON ONE OF CPO SHARKEY!

The sitcom debuted on NBC in late 1976, starring famous insult comedian Don Rickles (known to modern audiences as the voice of "Mr. Potato Head" in the Toy Story films) as U.S. Navy CPO (Chief Petty Officer) Otto Sharkey, stationed at the San Diego Naval Base to lead a group of seaman recruits.

In CPO SHARKEY, Rickles has the Navy blues as the CPO trying to whip a bunch of raw recruits into nautical shape. To say he fails isn't true because it was fun to watch him try. Every week, Sharkey had to deal with obtuse recruits, dim-witted seamen, stern captains, and a semi-understanding chief who tried without success to keep Sharkey out of trouble. As a 24-year naval veteran, CPO Sharkey had pretty much seen and heard it all. With his famous sharp tongued wit, Sharkey was politically incorrect before the term existed!

THE BEST OF SEASON ONE features six episodes selected by Mr. Warmth himself! Oh Captain! My Captain The Dear John Letter Goodbye Dolly Sunday in Tijuana Sharkey Boogies on Down Sharkey’s Secret Life

WHY BUY? This is classic television comedy, perfect for fans of The Carol Burnett Show, Mama’s Family and The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts and other great comedy. One of the last of the great old-school comedians, at 89, Rickles is still going strong! Six of Rickles’ favorite episodes from Season One.

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Texas Band Members: Phil Anselmo "" Abbott

One of the preeminent metal band of all time, Pantera put to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passé. As one of metal's most ferocious acts, with one of its most insanely devoted audiences, it's clear as an empty whiskey bottle that Pantera's impact and influence on heavy music is still being felt. The preeminent metal band of the early to mid-'90s,Panteraput to rest any and all remnants of the '80s metal scene, almost single-handedly demolishing any notion that hair metal, speed metal, power metal, et al., were anything but passé. Loathe to admit it, the Texas band had in fact been one of those '80s metal bands, releasing fairly unsuccessful (and later disowned) glam-inspired music throughout much of the decade. The about-face came with the addition of vocalistPhil Anselmo, and the key turning point was the band's major-label debut,Cowboys from Hell(1990).Pantera's mainstream breakthrough came next withVulgar Display of Power(1992), their second major-label album, which thrust the band to the forefront of the metal scene, alongside such veteran bands asMetallica,,Slayer, andAnthrax, as well as fellow up-and-comersSepulturaandWhite Zombie. By the timePanteraunleashedFar Beyond Driven(1994), after two long years of touring, they were the most popular metal band in the land: the new album debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 as its lead single, "I'm Broken," was getting massive .At the height of their popularity and influence,Panterabegan to self-destruct. Less than two months after the release ofThe Great Southern Trendkill(1996) -- an album ridden with allusions to drug abuse and personal destruction --Anselmooverdosed on heroin after a homecoming concert in Texas, and as tensions rose between him and his fellow bandmembers, he began engaging with a growing list of side projects that kept him away fromPantera. A live album,Official Live: 101 Proof(1997), was compiled for release when it became evident that no new studio album was forthcoming any time soon. One final studio album did result,Reinventing the Steel(2000), but that was more or less it for the briefly reunitedPantera. The bandmembers once again went their sperate ways, forming such bands asDamageplan,Down, andSuperjoint Ritual. The end ofPanterathen became official on December 8, 2004, when guitaristDimebag Darrellwas murdered on-stage by a deranged fan. This much-publicized murder shone the spotlight back onPanterafor an extended moment, and amid all of the emotional outpouring and tributes, a consensus arose: in retrospect, there was no greater metal band during the early to mid-'90s thanPantera, who inspired a legion of rabid fans and whose oft-termed "" style bucked all prevailing trends of the day -- from hair metal and to nu-metal and rap-metal -- and remains singular to this day, as defined by the vocals ofAnselmoas it is by the guitar ofDimebag. ---allmusic.com---

Side A Side B 01 Piss 01 Avoid The Light ALBUM FACTS Genre: Rock Description: With their 1990 album Cowboys From Hell, Pantera debuted their signature sound and invigorated the metal scene while enlisting legions of devoted fans around the world. For the next decade, the band continued to ascend to the top of the music world, earning four platinum albums and, with 1994's Far Beyond Driven, a #1 debut on the Billboard album chart. To celebrate Pantera's raucous legacy, Rhino will release both a new 5-LP boxed set and single disc compilation. THE COMPLETE STUDIO ALBUMS 1990-2000, compiled of Cowboys From Hell (1990), Vulgar Display Of Power (1992), Far Beyond Driven (1994), The Great Southern Trendkill (1996), and Reinventing The Steel (2000).

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Texas Band Members: Phil Anselmo "Dimebag Darrell" Abbott Rex Brown Vinnie Paul

The about-face came with the addition of vocalistPhil Anselmo, and the key turning point was the band's major-label debut,Cowboys from Hell(1990).Pantera's mainstream breakthrough came next withVulgar Display of Power(1992), their second major-label album, which thrust the band to the forefront of the metal scene, alongside such veteran bands asMetallica,Megadeth,Slayer, andAnthrax, as well as fellow up-and-comersSepulturaandWhite Zombie. By the timePanteraunleashedFar Beyond Driven(1994), after two long years of touring, they were the most popular metal band in the land: the new album debuted atop the Billboard Top 200 as its lead single, "I'm Broken," was getting massive airplay. At the height of their popularity and influence,Panterabegan to self-destruct. This much-publicized murder shone the spotlight back onPanterafor an extended moment, and amid all of the emotional outpouring and tributes, a consensus arose: in retrospect, there was no greater metal band during the early to mid-'90s thanPantera, who inspired a legion of rabid fans and whose oft-termed "groove metal" style bucked all prevailing trends of the day -- from hair metal and grunge to nu-metal and rap-metal -- and remains singular to this day, as defined by the vocals ofAnselmoas it is by the guitar ofDimebag. ---allmusic.com---

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Jazz Radio Formats: Jazz Focus Markets: New York, NY; Los Angeles, CA; SF-Oakland-San Jose, CA; Boston, MA; Chicago, IL; Washington, DC; Seattle-Tacoma, WA; Philadelphia, PA; Portland, OR; Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN; Description: Nonesuch Records releases Brad Mehldau's 10 Years Solo Live eight-LP vinyl box set October 16, 2015. The set is culled from 19 live recordings made over a decade of the pianist's European solo concerts and is divided into four thematic subsets of four sides each: Dark/Light, The Concert, Intermezzo/Rückblick, and E Minor/E Major. 10 Years Solo Live will be released digitally and on CD the following month.

As Mehldau explains in his liner note for the album, "Although it totals around 300 minutes, the order of songs is not arbitrary, and I have tried to tell a story from beginning to end in the way I've sequenced it." He continues, "There is a theme and character given to each four-side set."

Of the Dark/Light theme, he says, "In concerts, I find that I contrast dark and light emotional energies and highlight the way they depend on each other. Sides 1–4 focus on this dichotomy in pairs, beginning with the dark energy of 's 'Dream Brother,' which is followed by the grace of Lennon/McCartney's 'Blackbird.'" He further says, "Although the songs on Sides 5–8 (The Concert) come from different concerts, on this set, I arranged them in a sequence similar to that I would perform in a single concert in 2010–11," he continues.

"The third set could be thought of as Intermezzo and Rückblick–like in character. I'm thinking of the penultimate movement of Brahms's Third Piano Sonata with that title. Rückblick means a look backward, perhaps a reappraisal. Brahms's Intermezzo movement was a look back at what had taken place in his Sonata before moving to the final movement. Here, the listener is invited to look back to music that was recorded 10 or more years ago, in 2004 and 2005." Mehldau explains that his approach to the sequence of the fourth set "is to focus on the rub between the keys of E minor and E major. I return to the theme of dark and light from the first set, now allowing the listener to focus on how 'dark' and 'light' might manifest in tonality."

Mehldau has performed around the world at a steady pace for 25 years, with his trio, with other collaborators, and as a solo pianist, building a large and loyal audience. "It is actually strange, this whole business of performance. It is a direct, intense kind of empathy with a group of total strangers that lasts around 90 minutes. And then, it's over, and everyone goes home. I go back to a hotel room and go to bed," the pianist says in his10 Years Solo Livenote. "Something happened, but what was most vital about it can't really be put in words. It is sweet, kind of bittersweet. In any case, it is not enough to say that the different audiences were important for the creation of this music. They were absolutely necessary; they were pivotal. Without those audiences, this music would not exist in the way it does."

ARTIST & INFO Brad Mehldau played in a number of different ensembles, including label mate 's quartet, before becoming a bandleader himself in the 1990s. The Brad Mehldau Trio, which tours the world extensively, made eight acclaimed recordings for Warner Bros., including the five widely praised Art of the Trio albums with former drummer Jorge Rossy (released as a boxed set by Nonesuch in 2011). The pianist's nine years with Nonesuch have been equally productive, beginning with the solo disc Live in and including six trio records Day is Done, , Live, Ode , and , as well as a collaboration with soprano Renée Fleming, ; a chamber ensemble album, ; two collaborations with label mate Pat Metheny, Metheny Mehldau and Quartet , the latter of which also includes Trio members Jeff Ballard and Larry Grenadier; a CD/DVD set of live solo performances, ; and collaborations with genre-crossing musicians on Modern Music, with composer/pianist Kevin Hays and composer/arranger . Additionally, he produced saxophonist Joshua Redman's 2013 release Walking Shadows.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: World Music Producers: All music composed by Shye Ben Tzur; Arranged by Shye Ben Tzur & Jonny Greenwood; Produced by Jonny Greenwood; Recorded, mixed and engineered by Nigel Godrich Radio Formats: AAA, Non-commercial, college, world Description: Nonesuch Records releases Junun —an album from composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and the Rajasthan Express, a group of Indian qawwali musicians—on November 13, 2015. Recorded earlier this year in a makeshift studio inside the 15th-century Fort in Jodhpur, , the album was made with 's producer Nigel Godrich, who worked with the ensemble to create this two LP/CD album. The album features Ben Tzur's compositions, which combine ecstatic, devotional Sufi qawwal musical traditions and his native Hebrew.

The filmmaker , a friend and frequent collaborator of Greenwood, came along to document the recording sessions as well as daily life and the close camaraderie of artistic collaboration. Anderson's resulting impressionistic film, also entitled Junun , debuted at the New York Film Festival on October 8 and begins streaming exclusively on MUBI, where it will stream for 30 days, on October 9. Junun also will be shown at the Rome Film Festival in mid-October.

Greenwood made a guest appearance last year during Ben Tzur's concert, where they previewed some of the music of Junun , and this summer, the two were joined by the qawwali party for two performances at the Sacred Music Festival. Further concerts are being planned for the future, as are additional screenings of Anderson's film.

He composes qawwalis, instrumental and devotional music, in Hebrew, , and Hindi. A concert by Zakir Hussain and Hariprasad Chaurasia that Ben Tzur attended as a young man was life-changing. "It touched my heart so deeply," he says. "It was at the time the deepest musical experience I had gone through. It moved me so that I could do nothing but go find out what it is. I feel I'm still in that spot. I don't think I have achieved it. Indian music is so vast and so deep and the more I learn different things about it, I realize how ignorant I was. It just doesn't stop."

"When I was in the Negev desert in southern Israel a couple of years ago, I heard a band playing a song using an Arabic violin called a rehab," Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood told London's Evening Standard. "It was a strange mix of Arabic and traditional Indian music, one that I'd never come across before," He continued, "The best song, I found out, was written by Shye Ben Tzur, an Israeli musician who had been living in India until this year. I set out to discover more about him … I'm always a little wary of rock bands half-heartedly dabbling in world music—itself a slightly greasy term—but there are exceptions. Damon Albarn is one: his work with musicians in Mali is something he's clearly fully committed to. And I think Shye Ben Tzur is another." Widely known as the guitarist for Radiohead, Jonny Greenwood also is a highly respected composer. In addition to his soundtracks to Paul Thomas Anderson's Inherent Vice, There Will Be Blood, and The Master, Nonesuch also released his score for Norwegian Wood and his collaboration with Polish composer Krzysztof Penderecki.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Dance

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Paris, St Germain (aka Ludovic Navarre), whose albums Boulevard (1995) and Tourist (2000) originated a genre of French electronic music that later included artists like Air, has returned to the studio to create his first album in 15 years. The self-titled record, due October 9, 2015, on Nonesuch Records in the United States, marries percussive grooves, which have always been central to St Germain’s sound, with a new element: traditional Malian music.

St Germain’s move closer to the source of the jazz and blues elements that were essential ingredients in Boulevard and the internationally acclaimed Tourist led to his interest in those genres’ roots in West African music. Tourist , which sold nearly three million copies worldwide (more than 300,000 in the US alone), was equally beloved in jazz and electronic music circles, reaching #1 on Billboard’s Contemporary Jazz Albums chart and being named one of the Best Albums of the Year by Rolling Stone. In France, the album won three awards (the French equivalent of Grammys), including Best Jazz Album, Best Electronic Album and Best Live Performance.

On the 250-show Tourist tour, St Germain performed at venues ranging from London’s historic Royal Albert Hall to the Glastonbury and Coachella festivals, with guests including Herbie Hancock, Jamaican guitarist Ernest Ranglin, Jamaican jazz pianist Monty Alexander and legendary French jazz vocalist Claude Nougaro. Following the release of St Germain, Navarre will return to the road, beginning a European in November. A US tour will be announced at a later date.

ALBUM FACTS Genre: Country

ARTIST & INFO Hometown: Breckenridge, TX and Nashville, TN Morgan Frazier’s remarkable journey began in a small Texas town where she made her way to Nashville by literally going door-to-door. At just nine years old, Morgan recorded her first CD in her hometown of Breckenridge, Texas. Although they had no formal plans to market or sell the CD's, Morgan's family believed in their little girl's talent and ordered one thousand copies. For the next two years, Morgan and her family traveled all over the South and Southwest selling over thirty thousand copies of her album. At the age of sixteen, Morgan followed her dream to Nashville where she perfected her songwriting craft and honed her chops at the legendary Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge. Frazier took a break from performing at Nashville’s famous Tootsie’s Orchid Lounge to audition for The Voice and ended up wowing all four judges with her unique cover of Cheap Trick’s “I Want You To Want Me.” Frazier took the stage with an acoustic guitar and impressed the crowd with her earthy, yet pretty, vocal style and fresh take on the tune, which she says should be a country love song. Judge turned her chair around after just one line, but Shelton pulled the rug out from under her at the last minute, spinning on the final notes. The celebrities argued for their teams, with Shelton using his country prowess as leverage from the get-go.

Jethro Tull were a unique phenomenon in popular music history. Their mix of hard rock; folk melodies; blues licks; surreal, impossibly dense lyrics; and overall profundity defied easy analysis, but that didn't dissuade fans from giving them 11 gold and five platinum albums. At the same time, critics rarely took them seriously, and they were off the cutting edge of popular music since the end of the 1970s. But no record store in the country would want to be without multiple copies of each of their most popular albums (Benefit, Aqualung, , Living in the Past), or their various best-of compilations, and few would knowingly ignore their newest releases. Of their contemporaries, only Yes could claim a similar degree of success, and Yes endured several major shifts in sound and membership in reaching the 1990s, while Tull remained remarkably stable over the same period. As co-founded and led by wildman/flutist/guitarist/singer/songwriter Ian Anderson, the group carved a place all its own in popular music. Tull had its roots in the British blues boom of the late '60s. Anderson (b. Aug. 10, 1947, Edinburgh, Scotland) had moved to when he was 12. His first band was called the Blades, named after James Bond's club, with Michael Stephens on guitar, -Hammond (b. July 30, 1946) on bass, and John Evans (b. Mar. 28, 1948) on drums, playing a mix of jazzy blues and soulful dance music on the Northern club circuit. In 1965, they changed their name to the John Evan Band (Evan having dropped the "s" in his name at Hammond's suggestion) and later the John Evan Smash. By the end of 1967, (b. Apr. 24, 1947, Barrow-in-Furness, , England) had replaced Hammond-Hammond on bass. The group moved to Luton in order to be closer to London, the center of the British blues boom, and the band began to fall apart when Anderson and Cornick met guitarist/singer (b. Apr. 7, 1943, Luton, Bedfordshire, England) and drummer Clive Bunker (b. Dec. 12, 1946), who had previously played together in the Toggery Five and were now members of a local blues band called McGregor's Engine. In December of 1967, the four of them agreed to form a new group. They began playing two shows a week, trying out different names, including Navy Blue and Bag of Blues. One of the names that they used, Jethro Tull, borrowed from an 18th-century farmer/inventor, proved popular and memorable, and it stuck. In January of 1968, they cut a rather derivative pop-folk single called "," released by MGM Records (under the misprinted name Jethro Toe) the following month. The single went nowhere, but the group managed to land a residency at the in London, where they became very popular. Early on, they had to face a problem of image and configuration, however. In the late spring of 1968, managers Terry Ellis and Chris Wright (who later founded ) first broached the idea that Anderson give up playing the flute, and to allow Mick Abrahams to take center stage. At the time, a lot of blues enthusiasts didn't accept wind instruments at all, especially the flute, as seminal to the sound they were looking for, and as a group struggling for success and recognition, Jethro Tull were just a little too strange in that regard. Abrahams was a hardcore blues enthusiast who idolized British blues godfather Alexis Korner, and he was pushing for a more traditional band configuration, which would've put him and his guitar out front. As it turned out, they were both right. Abrahams' blues sensibilities were impeccable, but the audience for British blues by itself couldn't elevate Jethro Tull any higher than being a top club act. Anderson's antics on-stage, jumping around in a ragged overcoat and standing on one leg while playing the flute, and his use of folk sources as well as blues and jazz, gave the band the potential to grab a bigger audience and some much-needed press attention. But no record store in the country would want to be without multiple copies of each of their most popular albums (Benefit, Aqualung, Thick as a Brick, Living in the Past), or their various best-of compilations, and few would knowingly ignore their newest releases. Aug. 10, 1947, Edinburgh, Scotland) had moved to Blackpool when he was 12. His first band was called the Blades, named after James Bond's club, with Michael Stephens on guitar, Jeffrey Hammond-Hammond (b. By the end of 1967, Glenn Cornick (b. Apr. 24, 1947, Barrow-in-Furness, Cumbria, England) had replaced Hammond-Hammond on bass. The group moved to Luton in order to be closer to London, the center of the British blues boom, and the band began to fall apart when Anderson and Cornick met guitarist/singer Mick Abrahams (b. In January of 1968, they cut a rather derivative pop-folk single called "Sunshine Day," released by MGM Records (under the misprinted name Jethro Toe) the following month. The single went nowhere, but the group managed to land a residency at the Marquee Club in London, where they became very popular. Early on, they had to face a problem of image and configuration, however. In the late spring of 1968, managers Terry Ellis and Chris Wright (who later founded Chrysalis Records) first broached the idea that Anderson give up playing the flute, and to allow Mick Abrahams to take center stage. They opened for Pink Floy
