HL will be used as an abbreviation for Hal Leonard. Lower Elementary Children (Ages 6 – 8, Grades 1-3) Rules: 2 contrasting age appropriate selections in reasonable keys. Students will perform in English. Exceptions may be made for children who have been raised with a different language in their family of origin. Suggested Anthologies and Repertoire: 1. Allow simple folk songs, American Songs, and hymns from class voice books such as The Singing Book by Meribeth Dayme and Cynthia Vaughn and Basics of Singing by Jan Schmidt. No rounds. 3. These will include the Handel arias Ombra Mai Fu, Where E’re You Walk, and The Birds No More Shall Sing. 6. Classical songs and oratorio pieces from Jackie Evancho Dream with Me will be permitted except O Mio Babbino Caro and any operatic aria not from the Baroque period. 7. All classical songs and Oratorio pieces from Charlotte Church, Voice of An Angel will be permitted. Wise Publications. 8. Specific oratorio arias will be permitted to include Panis Angelicus, The Lord’s Prayer (Malotte), and Ave Maria by Caccini.     Richard Wagner on the Practice and Teaching of Singing By Peter Bassett [A paper presented to the 8th International Congress of Voice Teachers on 13 July 2013.] Weber and Beethoven were still alive when Wagner was a teenager, and their long shadows, together with those of Mozart and Marschner fell on all his early projects. His first completed opera Die Feen, composed in 1833 when he was just twenty years old, was never performed in his lifetime but, even if it had been, it wouldn’t have sounded as good as it does in the best recorded versions we know today. The type of singing familiar to Wagner was far from ideal, and many German singers of his era were poorly trained and had unsophisticated techniques. His sternest critic, Eduard Hanslick had something to say on the difference between German and Italian singers at that time: ‘With the Italians’ he said, ‘great certainty and evenness throughout the role; with the Germans an unequal alternation of brilliant and mediocre moments, which seems partly accidental.’ Wagner had to entrust his major roles to inadequately trained singers in many cases, which must have been challenging to say the least. He worked hard to improve matters, pouring much time and energy into the preparation of performances. ‘I do not care in the slightest’ he once said, ‘whether my works are performed. What I do care about is that they are performed as I intended them to be. Anyone who cannot, or will not, do so, had better leave them alone.’ David Breckbill has written that ‘The differences between the singing which Wagner knew and that which we hear today are considerable.

Haste [email protected] Keywords: prayer, performance, gesture, ritual, entertainment, YouTube Abstract The Lord’s Prayer is a central text in Christian liturgy, generally recited rather than sung, often as a communal act of worship. The text has also provided inspiration for many musical settings, a process of ‘musicking’ [musikierung] which takes the text out of its traditional worship environment. The internet – and specifically video-streaming sites such as YouTube – are now providing a medium for the dissemination of stage, screen, studio and audio performances of the Lord’s Prayer as song, and these are now reaching – and speaking to – new audiences up to eighty years after they were made; the fact that individuals continue to post video and audio content of the Lord’s Prayer as song reflects their desire to share something which has moved them, whether musically or spiritually, with a worldwide audience. In liberating the text from its liturgical context and releasing it as song into classical, jazz, rock, and pop performance arenas, many questions are raised about the transformation of textual meaning and ritual significance. The aim of this study is to examine the meaningfulness of the musico-textual setting for the receiver, firstly through the question of ownership of the text as a communal prayer, and secondly in arguing that perception and reception of the performer are contributory factors in the relative positivity or negativity of the receiver’s response.

    DIVA RIVALRY FOR FUN AND PROFIT: AN EXAMINATION OF DIVA [MIS-]CONCEPTIONS VIA THE RIVALRY OF MARIA CALLAS AND RENATA TEBALDI A thesis submitted to The Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF MUSIC in the Division of Composition, Musicology, and Theory at the College-Conservatory of Music 2013 by Sarah Pozderac-Chenevey B.A., Mercyhurst College, 2009 Committee Chair: Jeongwon Joe, PhD ABSTRACT The [in]famous rivalry between Renata Tebaldi and Maria Callas is part of a long tradition of diva competition and comparison. This thesis examines the historiography of prime donne and their feuds and then explores in turn the major components of this diva rivalry: the women’s public careers, their personal lives, and their depictions in media. Though the popular image of the two posits that Callas and Tebaldi were in direct competition for roles but strikingly different offstage, the facts suggest that they were far more similar in personality than generally acknowledged and that their repertoires had little overlap and thus sparse motive for direct professional conflict than widely assumed. I argue that much of the common knowledge about Callas and Tebaldi is the result of preconceived expectations and skewed representations rather than reality.
