Moore Title: A CONVICTION OF TEXTS NOT SEEN: PERCEIVING EXODUS AS THE GENERATIVE TEXT OF HEBREWS Advisor: Pamela Eisenbaum, Ph.D. Degree Date: June 2017 ABSTRACT The Book of Hebrews has increasingly come to be regarded as a remarkable example of Jewish-Christian scriptural exegesis and biblical intertextuality. Scholars routinely apply terms associated with ancient Jewish exegesis to Hebrews, including “midrash,” “gezerah shewa ,” “ qal wahomer ,” and “synagogue homily.” One problem, however, is that most analyses in which Christian views of scripture are operative tend to overlook key elements of Jewish concepts of scripture, particularly with regard to the significance of the Pentateuch. The Pentateuch, or Torah, forms the nucleus of the Scriptures from a Jewish perspective, the first and most important division of the Scriptures, different in nature and priority than the rest of the Hebrew Bible. The majority of ancient Jewish exegesis was Torah-centric, as is evident by the prominence of the Books of Moses in works like the Mekilta on Exodus, the oldest collections of rabbinic midrash, and even biblical texts and exegetical works like Jubilees among the Dead Sea Scrolls. Most studies of Hebrews, on the other hand, prioritize texts from the Psalms and Prophets in interpretation. Hebrews has often been characterized as a midrash on Ps 110 or as a series expositions on texts from the Prophets and Writings, for instance. Those approaches do not adequately account for the fundamental and generative role of the Pentateuch. If Hebrews is, indeed, an exegetical work like midrash or a form of ii synagogue homily, we would, instead, expect it to be based on a generative text (or texts) from the Pentateuch. This study proposes that the Sinai pericope of Exodus (Exod 19-40) serves as the primary generative text of Hebrews and that the many citations of the Prophets and Writings function exegetically in relation to Exodus. Hebrews’ message emerges from the juxtaposition of texts and themes of Exodus with texts from the Prophets and Writings. The Psalms, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Haggai are all used to explain and expound upon Pentateuchal paradigms such as the Sinai Covenant, Moses, Aaron’s priesthood, and the wilderness sanctuary, showing how Jesus and his ministry relate to what had been the reigning paradigms for centuries. This study examines five major exegetical sections of Hebrews to demonstrate how Hebrews uses texts from the Prophets and Writings in its exegesis of themes, passages and verses from Exodus 19-40 to legitimize and explain the person and ministry of Jesus in relation to the Law of Moses. iii NOTES TO THE READER Abbreviations throughout are in accordance with the Society of Biblical Literature Handbook of Style, 2 nd edition (2014). Paying special attention to the discursive forms of the Talmud, I show how juxtapositions of narrative and legal dialectics cooperate in generating the Talmud's distinctive ethics, which I characterize as an attentiveness to the “exceptional particulars” of life. To demonstrate the features and rewards of a literary approach, I offer a sustained reading of a single tractate from the Babylonian Talmud, ʿAvoda Zara (AZ). AZ and other talmudic discussions about non-Jews offer a rich resource for considerations of ethics because they are centrally concerned with constituting social relationships and with examining aspects of human experience that exceed the domain of Jewish law. AZ investigates what distinguishes Jews from non-Jews, what Jews and non- Jews share in common, and what it means to be a human being. I read AZ as a cohesive literary work unified by the overarching project of examining the place of humanity in the cosmos.

    JOHN PECHAM ON THE FORM OF LAMENTATIONS J. Cornelia Linde In late medieval Latin Bibles, the visual make-up of the Book of Lamentations catches the reader’s eye: the text consists of five distinct short chapters and each verse of the first four chapters is preceded by the name of a Hebrew letter, in alphabetic order, usually written in red ink. This inclusion of the Hebrew letters is a common feature in manuscripts of the Late Medieval Bible. The place of Lamentations within the biblical canon is stable: it is placed after the Book of Jeremiah, to whom it was attributed, and the transition between the two books is usually bridged by a short preface derived from the Septuagint tradition: Et factum est postquam in captivitatem reductus est Israel et Hierusalem deserta est sedit Hieremias flens et planxit lamentationem hanc in Hierusalem et dixit.1 In contrast to other prefaces to biblical books, this brief passage was not usually labelled. Instead, it was incorporated into the text. Judging from a survey of a small number of manuscripts, the positioning of this preface at the start of Lamentations right after the incipit seems to have been more common in thirteenth-century Bibles than the position at the end of the Book of Jeremiah.2 In some instances, the connecting preface was inserted at the end of the Book of Jeremiah without a following 1 “And it came to pass after Israel had been led into captivity and Jerusalem had been deserted that Jeremiah sat weeping and cried this lament in Jerusalem and said”; see Biblia sacra iuxta latinam vulgatam versionem ad codicum fidem, cura et studio monachorum Abbatiae pontificiae Sancti Hieronymi in Urbe O.

    THE PRICE OF MEDIATION: THE ROLE OF PRIESTS IN THE PRIESTLY HALAKHAH Cana Werman Any discussion of facets of the Qumran writings is a risky task given the issues that are still being debated and the lack of consensus regard- ing numerous key questions. Nonetheless, most scholars nowadays would tend to concur that the halakhic dispute between the Qumran community members and the group(s) influenced by the Pharisaic position played a decisive role in the community members’ decision to withdraw from Jerusalem and live in isolation. Attempts to better understand the origin and specifics of this halakhic dispute must come to grips with methodological obstacles.1 The halakhic system embedded in the Qumran writings is the one that was accepted by the Community, and was partly created within its own confines after the withdrawal and after its decision to adopt a 364-day calendar that had never been used in the Land of Israel before.2 The Qumranic halakhic system needs to be teased apart to identify those elements adhered to by the community and those also accepted by the wider group from which the community detached itself, the priestly circle who controlled the Jerusalem temple during the fourth, third, 1 Joseph M.
