DEAR AUDIENCE 20 years have passed since Dance Year ’93 – the largest ever celebration of dance in Norway. This was the inspiration for this year’s theme of Norwegian choreography in focus. During the festival established choreographers working with international partners, and young choreographers working abroad will be presented. And in a new concept – CODAfringe – we will meet a new generation of dance artists. A number of Norwegian choreographers have made their mark internationally. Jo Strømgren is one of them, another is Ingun Bjørnsgaard. Two choreographers with strong signature expressions, but can their productions be called “Norwegian”? Can we speak about Norwegian dance as having an artistic identity and if so, what is “Norwegian dance”? Is there something distinctively Norwegian about the works of Ludvig Daae and Anne-Linn Akselsen, who have a background from P.A.R.T.S./ROSAS in Brussels, and are based abroad? What is it beyond an artist’s nationality that makes their work with dance “Norwegian”? Is it important to reflect a Norwegian identity and does a work become Norwegian simply because it is inspired by Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, as in Bjørnsgaard’s latest work HEDDA. Cultural journalist Fredrik Rütter has followed the development of Norwegian dance for the past 20 years. He claims in his article that the distance between dance and Norwegi- an audiences has widened. He calls for artists who are willing to meet audiences halfway. Is it in fact theatres’ presentation of dance works that is at fault? A lack of dance coverage in the Norwegian media must also bear a part of the responsibility for dance’s failure to reach a broader segment of the population. In collaboration with the Norwegian Critics’ Association CODA offers a mini-seminar open to all: Does Norwegian contemporary dance exist? We hope to see you there and other- wise at the various arrangements taking place during the festival. Welcome to CODA 2013! 2017 THE NORDIC COUNTRIES MADE IN 2017 NO BORDERS We in the arts can take centre stage and show that the ability to collaborate is one of the finest things in humanity, and is crucial for our survival. The Nordic countries have a long-standing tradition of working together, and the MADE IN project, its catalogue and website, is a small yet great example of that. Artists, leaders and promoters in the performing arts from five countries have come together to jointly present their information on what they are all doing right now and in the near future. This is the fifth edition, and for the first time, we’ve decided not to list the catalogue by country, as we chose to fully commit to our manifesto for no borders between Nordic performing arts organisations. You are all welcome to start your communication with any of us, as in front of you is a network of fearless artists not unlike their Viking ancestors. The idea of a common printed directory for collecting contact information was born in 2010. We felt there was the potential to increase visibility in order to stimulate more exchange, networking and business operations internationally. Fantastic work for all kinds of audiences was available throughout the region, but the visibility could be stronger, we argued. We turned to the artists and institutions active in the field and many were keen to get involved. Today more than 60 companies are part of the project. The distribution channel that has been used since the start is delegate bags in performing arts festivals and fairs around the world. We believe it is a simple and effective way of reaching our target group. The MADE IN directory provides an overview of what is currently available and what is in the pipeline. It focuses on contact information, on connecting the art to its audience. In 2014 we started the website www.madein-theweb.com. There you will find extended information about our subscribers with the possibility to see filmed trailers and a calendar that is continuously updated with performan- ces, workshops and other events.
