The NRVT will ultimately provide residents throughout the region with a safe pedestrian and bicycle path that will connect to neighboring municipalities. Certain sections of the trail will be designed to accommodate equestrians as well. In most areas along the length of the alignment, the preferred NRVT route was apparent due to the relative ease of developing a trail within the contiguous corridor of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) properties or because of existing portions of the NRVT currently in use in Wilton and Norwalk. In a handful of locations, however, routing options were presented and narrowed down based on input from the general public and members of the Norwalk River Valley Trail Committee, which includes public officials, local commission members, and community advocates.
