Several additions have been made to the present volume : lists of Hundreds and Poor Law Unions have been included in the Topography of each County; it is stated under each Parish in what Hundred, Union and County Court District it is situate, as well as the Diocese, Archdeaconry and Rural Deanery; and the College and University of every Beneficed Clergyman have been given. The Post Office Savings Banks have been noticed; the names of the Parish Clerks are given under each Parish ; and lists of Farm Bailiffs of gentlemen farming their own land have been added. / The bulk of the Directory has again increased considerably: the Third Edition consisted of 1,420 pages; the Fourth had increased to 1,752 pages; and the present contains 1,986 pages. The value of the Directory, however, will depend principally on the fact that it has been most carefully corrected, every parish having been personally visited by the Agents during the last six months. The Proprietors have again to return their thanks to the Clergymen, Clerks of the Peace, Magistrates' Clerks, Registrars, and other Gentlemen who have assisted the Agents while collecting the information.

Some notes on the 1979 exchange have also been included to finish the story. This is the first major production by the Eastern National Enthusiasts Group following the re-organisation and expansion of the committee institu.ted in 1979. The present author then assumed his new role as Cba.irma.n & Founder, with a lesser administrative workload, which allowed more time to be devoted to historical research for publications such as the present study. Area route maps have been included, but since the central areas of Grays and Tilbury appear ver:y small, enlarged street plans (as at 1951/2) of the two towns, with the streets, timing points and terminals referred to in the tex.t all located, are appended. on page 39. Corresponding author. 2 Department of Geography, University of Durham, South Road, Durham, DH1 3LE, UK; e-mail: [email protected] Manuscript received: March 2001; accepted: February 2002 Abstract In this paper interglacial mammalian assemblages from key Middle Pleistocene fluvial sites in Germany are compared to Mammal Assemblage-Zones (MAZs) recently established in the post-Anglian/Elsterian sequence of the Lower Thames, UK. It is believed that four separate interglacials are represented by the Lower Thames MAZs, correlated with oxygen isotope stages (OIS) 11, 9, 7 and substage 5e (although the last of these is Late Pleistocene). Nowhere in Germany can a full se­ quence of these interglacials be identified from mammalian evidence in a single terrace staircase, as is the case in the Lower Thames, although further research on the Wipper terraces at Bilzingsleben may identify such a sequence. It is also possible that the sequence of overlapping fluvial channels in the lignite mine at Schoningen will eventually produce a comparable mammalian story. Excellent correspondence has been recognized between the mammalian assemblages at Steinheim an der Murr and Bilzingsleben II and the Swanscombe MAZ from the Thames. These three sites are attributed to the Hoxnian/Hol- steinian interglacial and are thought to correlate with OIS 11.

    Yellow-legged Gulls along the River Thames in Essex M. K. Dennis The improvement in water quality of the River Thames has led to an increase in the diversity and numbers of gulls Lams, waders and wildfowl using the river in recent years (Dennis 1992). This, coupled with the creation of several large rubbish- tips in Thames-side Essex and Kent, has encouraged large numbers of gulls into the area, particularly in autumn and winter. In the last decade, however, many gulls have also been present throughout the summer, with a marked increase in the number of Yellow-legged Gulls L. cachinnans since the mid 1970s. The present paper documents this increase along the Thames and examines the behaviour and movements of this now-regular late-summer visitor to southeast England. For convenience, the outer Thames estuary as defined here includes all Essex sites east of Mucking Flats, while the inner Thames includes those to the west. Pre-1980s The first indication that Yellow-legged Gulls were becoming more regular visitors to Essex came in the early 1970s, mainly as a result of improved observer coverage (Melville 1991). Regular monitoring of gull populations in the outer Thames estuary in Essex revealed up to 12 Yellow-legged Gulls in August and September 1973 and 1974; these usually arrived in early July and remained to mid October, a few staying into the winter (Melville 1991). Very few were seen elsewhere along the river at that time, and none at any of the well-watched sites along the inner Thames. The few London-area records in the early to mid 1970s were considered to involve probable hybrid Herring L, argentatus X Lesser Black-backed Gulls L.

    THAMES ESTUARY PATH: Tilbury Town to Southend ! Introduction There has been a long-term ambition to create a path from Central London, through East London and Essex, to Southend for some time. Over the years numerous parts of the path have been achieved but many gaps remain. In 2008, the cycling and transport charity SUSTRANS carried out a complete survey of the path for the Department of Communities and Local Government (CLG) and this is on the CLG website if you search under “Thames Estuary Path”. The Thames Estuary Path through Essex is an amazing path taking you past Thameside Forts, ancient Churches, through Thames Marshes and along the sea wall over-looking internationally important marshes and mudflats. From Tilbury to Southend it is approximately 30 miles, but the route has the advantage of being shadowed by C2C railway line with stations at Tilbury Town, East Tilbury, Stanford-le-Hope, Pitsea, Benfleet, Leith, Chalkwell and Southend-on-Sea. This enables the walker or cyclist to do “short sections” and returning on the train. The beauty of this route is you can choose to start at one station and walk for as much as you like and then get the train back. The stations are generally 3 to 4 miles or 6 to 8 kms apart. When describing the route the distance from Tilbury Town station is shown in brackets when the path passes subsequent stations. Sensible Precautions All walking is inherently risky and before starting your journey you should consider: • Food and drink • Walking sticks (if necessary) • Sun screen (summer) • Warm and waterproof clothing • Sound footwear especially as many parts of the path are muddy outside summer.
