Having been elected at convention and given the mandate to run the district , my journey has been a story and allow me to share it with you . My District Governor journey began with me having to do pre-assignments which led to me attending the District Governor Elect Seminar in Seattle, Washington, USA in July 2011. During my training there was a lot of advice given by mainly my group leader, PID Lion Ron Luxon who was very knowledgeable on all aspects of Lionism. I realised that there was quite a lot of knowledge and experience to gain and share from this historic experience both for me and most importantly to assist our District. I thus came back fired up and ready to lead. My theme for the year was INITIATE, CONSULT & COMMUNICATE FOR QUALITY SERVICE DELIVERY!

“Accepting this leadership role and being the first woman to be given this responsibility in District 412 has placed a major demand on my person. I am aware that there are quite a number of challenges that must be faced and overcome. This can only be achieved through collective effort and good team spirit. Fellow Lions and Leos, I therefore call upon your support and total commitment to help me in the endeavour to place emphasis on our Motto “We Serve” for our communities, zones, regions and the entire District 412. In other words, we need to continuously work together if we are to realise the expectations placed upon our District.” DG Frances 2011 Page 3 Senior Lions In Kinshasa DRC

Page 7 Planting a Million Trees – Did You Be-lieve it Could Be Done?

An important part of our extension of service the 2011-2012 Lionstic year was caring for our environment. Interna- tional President Wing-Kun Tam set the goal to plant a million trees around the world. That’s was less than one tree for each member. Did you believe it could be done. Of course Lions worldwide have always surpassed expec- tations in their campaigns. We had a successful Sight first appeal and campaign and the tree planting campaign was just an extension of our efforts to care for the environment. In the district our target at the beginning of the year was 5000 trees. Lions all over embraced the idea and did very well. All in all Region 1 in Malawi had the high- est number of trees planted and a big roar to all the Lions who made the campaign successful. The total number of trees planted by District 412 Lions and Leos the end of the Lionistic year was 14157 trees Club Name Total Trees Planted

The Lions Club of Capital City held its Tree Planting Day on Saturday, 7th January 2012. The func- tion was held jointly with the Lilongwe Water Board. The Lilongwe Water Board (LWB) is a statu- tory corporation that supplies water to the City of Lilongwe and the surrounding areas. LWB col- lects water from the Lilongwe River at Malingunde in Lilongwe rural near the source of the river. LWB constructed 2 dams : Kamuzu Dam 1 and Kamuzu Dam 2 as reservoirs for the water.

Over the years, there has been serious deforestation on the banks of Lilongwe River. This results in soil erosion and affects the quality of the water and threatens siltation in the dams. Without trees, there is also the threat of the river drying up. The Lions thus went green and planted trees at this site.

A total of 700 trees were planted .The resource school for the blind hosts up to 36 students out of which 21 are girls. The school has an administration block which was also donated by Limbe Lions Club through Salima Lions club in 2006.

As the pictures show disability is not inability , the visual impaired student on the right proves the point

Shabani Lions believe that the youth will be the guardians of the environment. So they took their tree planting efforts in that direction. They held environ- mental talks at schools and then asked the school kids to plant the trees . In total they planted 290 trees which is the highest number planted in Zimbabwe by any club. In the pictures above on the left Shabani Primary children go green and plant trees at their schools. On the right Dadaya High school students take time off and attend to pressing environment issues by planting trees also in their school peripheries. Way to go Lions

Thank you to DG for giving me the opportunity that you did. Thank you to all Cabinet Members for helping and encourag- ing me. It has been a great pleasure for me this last few months to be Cabinet Secretary and without all of you I would not have succeeded at all. I know I have made mistakes, but I also know that I have learned a lot – not just about Lionism but also about myself. I have enjoyed being able to visit Zimbabwe for the first time. Thank you also to everyone for their hospitali- ty that I have received with lots of laughs and memories to take with me. I want to wish the incoming Cabinet all the best for 2012/13!! It’s the last edition and it has been a long road , and as the team looks back at its achievements, we are glad Parting Shoot that we were part of the history making District Go- venors cabinet. We measured our success by the mere fact that every month for the past 12 months they has been a newsletter sent out by the DG to all the clubs. To us that’s the biggest and most important bench mark. The job description for the portfolio was very very simple, help Lions communicate in line with the DG’s theme. That meant the newsletter should showcase and capture all what the Lions are doing in their communities. So the team set out spread the word. The team thanks all those Lions that submitted articles to the PR team and those that did not too, we are confident they will start sending articles for publication. As the late statesman Dr Bingu WaMutarika would say, Let the work of my hands bear testimony, we also say in short, Let our work do the talking and judge us from our work. To my trusted co-producer Lion Piraishe Mabhena, I Believe, that our creden- tials on the wall do not make us Lions, its what they said and did after reading our work that makes us real Lions. I salute you Bambo ! That’s it for now...!!Hasta la vista Lions !!!!!!!
