CALIFORNIA YMCA YOUTH & GOVERNMENT Where in the World and International Trivia Knowledge Area: Cultural Knowledge

Skill Level: Beginner 2 3 4 Advanced Time: 01:00

Overview: This week is all about helping delegates to start understanding the world around them and how the geography can affect a countries stance on certain issues, both activities outlined below will develop group work skills, improve knowledge of world geography, and give delegates better knowledge of the United Nations.

Preparation: For both of the activities outlined below you will need printouts of world maps (attached below and linked here) and you will need writing utensils for your delegates.

Ice Breaker: a list of is available under the curriculum tab of the Y&G Resources Page

Activity #1: Where in the world Arrange delegates into groups of four. Provide each group with a world map. Have delegates in each group select a location on the map.

After delegates have selected a location, pick a group to go first. The group that is selected will answer yes or no questions from the other groups, one question at a time. (Group 2 asks a question first, then Group 3, 4, etc.) The questions might start out general and get more specific. You or a specified game leader monitors the questions asked to make sure they are fair questions. For example, questions might include: • Is the place on the continent of Africa? • Is the place north of the equator? • Is the place east of Mali? • Is part of the country located between 10 and 20 degrees South latitude?

As questions are asked, group members refer to their maps and agree on a response. If they give a “Yes” answer, the group that asked the question can choose to make a guess as to the name of the specific place. If the group guesses correctly, they earn five points. If the guess is incorrect, the next team asks a question that will help identify the place. After Group #1 location is guessed, it is Group #2’s turn to answer questions about the place they selected from the other groups; Group 3 begins the questioning.

Activity #2: Worldwide Jeopardy Delegates can stay in their original teams for this second activity and they should hold onto their map so they have something to reference when answering the questions. Teams will take turns picking a question to answer for points if the team answers incorrectly or cannot answer the question move onto the next team until someone answers correctly or every team has tried to answer the question.
