The History Today
TheDelamotte History is a Champagne house more than 250 years old (it is the sixth oldest Champagne house) founded in Reims in 1760 by François Delamotte, a vineyard owner. He and other Champagne producers were the creators of a tradition based on quality. Their modus operandi, far from being viewed as quaint, earned them a place in the Encyclopedia of Physiocrates. Their practices have been used as a model and a paradigm by other businesses due to their progressive outlook and insistence on quality. They were truly modern-minded people. Their masterpiece – the wines – continue to be recreated anew each year and the house of Delamotte is a prime example of the traditions of quality they embody. Alexandre Delamotte brought the cellars, caves and offices of the House of Delamotte to one beautiful mansion at the end of the 18th century. In 1828, his brother, Nicolas Louis Delamotte, also known as the Chevalier Delamotte Barrachin, a former Chevalier de Malte and President of the Chamber of Commerce of Reims, assumed management of the House of Delamotte. In this tenure with the Chamber of Commerce, Nicolas was well known for hosting spectacular events, namely the coronation of France’s last King, Charles X. Serge Chapuis The House was sold to the Lanson family in the 1830’s, who later started producing a Lanson label. It was eventually acquired by Marie-Louise de Nonancourt, née Lanson, in the period between the two World Wars. In 1927, Marie-Louise made the decision to transfer the activities of the house of Delamottte to Mesnil-sur-Oger. -

NV Champagnes Tasted in London: Jancis Robinson 09/07/19
NV champagnes tasted in London: Jancis Robinson 09/07/19 TASTING ARTICLES GROWERS' CHAMPAGNE Worshipping at the altar of non-vintage champagne... Tyson Stelzer is an Australian wine writer with a particular interest in screwcaps and champagne. It was the latter that lured him to a Hawksmoor church in London's Spitalfields recently to lay on the finest generic tasting of champagne the capital had seen for some time. To the outside observer it may seem strange that this event was organised from Australia and, apparently anyway, had nothing to do with the official generic champagne promotional body. Ours not to reason why. Taste Champagne was a great success for those of us who enjoy tasting champagne without too much of a crowd. I dare say Tyson might have wished for even more attendees at the trade tasting during the day and the public one in the evening. But it was a sufficient success for him and his team to be planning the next one already. Put 25 March 2020 in your diary... There were so many champagnes available to taste – 211 – that a strategy was needed. I decided to taste each exhibitor's standard non-vintage blend, which is after all the calling card of all producers and, according to the most accurate estimate I could get from champagne officials, represents 94.4% of all champagne produced. We may all fuss about the luxury-priced prestige cuvées, and I would like to point out that vintage champagne is probably the bargain category at the moment, but in reality, the champagne business is all about NV. -

Champagne Lilbert-Fils Cramant
Champagne Lilbert-Fils Cramant The written record has the Lilbert family cultivating vines around its hilltop village of Cramant in 1746, and it’s probably a fair bet that they were there sometime before that (the oldest part of their 23-foot-deep cellar dates from 1712). The record further shows that as early as 1907 the family bottled its own wine for commercial sale. Despite such longevity, the house of Lilbert is tiny: it farms a mere 3.5 hectares of vines (this figure translates into 8.6 acres, and unfortunately our old back label erroneously states 9.4 acres). Bertrand Lilbert and his father Georges make only grand cru blanc de blancs from 100% Chardonnay. Their annual production averages 2,300 twelve-pack cases. To put this in perspective, the house of Moët & Chandon pumps out 25 million cases each year. Unlike Moët, the Lilberts make all of their wine from their own vineyards, which break down into 15 parcels in the grand cru villages of Oiry (10% of their total plantation), Chouilly (30%), and Cramant (60%) on the Côte des Blancs. The vine age average is 45 years old. Note that Cramant should not be confused with crémant. Crémant once used to be a term reserved for a style of Champagne with less pressure--and indeed the village of Cramant has a tradition of making wine in such a style, so much so that Lilbert's Perle was once labeled as Crémant de Cramant. But those days are gone and now crémant legally refers to all méthode Champenoise wine made within France but outside of the Champagne appellation." The Côte des Blancs is a ridge that begins just outside of Epernay and runs north-south. -
