  • Champagne Lilbert-Fils Cramant
Champagne Lilbert-Fils Cramant The written record has the Lilbert family cultivating vines around its hilltop village of Cramant in 1746, and it’s probably a fair bet that they were there sometime before that (the oldest part of their 23-foot-deep cellar dates from 1712). The record further shows that as early as 1907 the family bottled its own wine for commercial sale. Despite such longevity, the house of Lilbert is tiny: it farms a mere 3.5 hectares of vines (this figure translates into 8.6 acres, and unfortunately our old back label erroneously states 9.4 acres). Bertrand Lilbert and his father Georges make only grand cru blanc de blancs from 100% Chardonnay. Their annual production averages 2,300 twelve-pack cases. To put this in perspective, the house of Moët & Chandon pumps out 25 million cases each year. Unlike Moët, the Lilberts make all of their wine from their own vineyards, which break down into 15 parcels in the grand cru villages of Oiry (10% of their total plantation), Chouilly (30%), and Cramant (60%) on the Côte des Blancs. The vine age average is 45 years old. Note that Cramant should not be confused with crémant. Crémant once used to be a term reserved for a style of Champagne with less pressure--and indeed the village of Cramant has a tradition of making wine in such a style, so much so that Lilbert's Perle was once labeled as Crémant de Cramant. But those days are gone and now crémant legally refers to all méthode Champenoise wine made within France but outside of the Champagne appellation." The Côte des Blancs is a ridge that begins just outside of Epernay and runs north-south.

FEMME DE CHAMPAGNE NV BRUT GRAND CRU The elegance of the Grands Crus Champagnes. With a delicate and fine structure, the cuvée Femme de Champagne Brut Grand Cru is a wine with great finesse and exceptional aromatic complexity. Femme de Champagne Brut Grand Cru reflects the elegance and refinements of the best crus, sought out by Maison Duval- Leroy for an unforgettable tasting experience. A blend of 87% Chardonnay and 13% Pinot Noir, Femme de Champagne Brut Grand Cru is the result of a delicate marriage of the best vineyards in the Champagne terroir (Avize, Chouilly, Le Mesnil sur Oger, Ambonnay). The colour of Femme de Champagne is bright yellow. At first the nose revels notes of citrus and fresh bread, this biscuit character then gives way to aromas of flowers and yellow fruits (hints of apricot, peach and quince). On the palate a bewitching flavour of ripe hazelnuts envelopes honeysuckle, this is quickly followed by the delicate notes of crystallized mandarin and orange peel. • Agrapart & Fils
SAMPLE CONTENT Overview Agrapart & Fils 57, avenue Jean Jaures Founded in 1894 by Arthur Agrapart, this outstanding estate in Avize acquired much of its present vineyard 51190 Avize land during the 1950s and ’60s, thanks to Arthur’s Tel. 03.26.57.51.38 grandson Pierre. Since 1984 it has been run by Pascal Agrapart and his brother Fabrice, who have taken the Fax. 03.26.57.05.06 domaine to ever-greater heights, emphasizing natural viticulture and the expression of terroir. The Agraparts’ vineyards are spread over 62 parcels, the majority of which lie in the grand cru villages of Avize, Cramant, Oiry and Oger. Average vine age is about 35 years, with the oldest vines in Avize over 60 years. Pascal Agrapart (pictured) is uninterested in be- ing labeled as either organic or biodynamic, but he does feel that it’s important to work according to natural rhythms and sensibilities, and both the vineyard work and the work in the cellar follow this philosophy. No chemical pesticides or weedkillers are ever used, and all of the vineyards are worked manually, encouraging the roots to descend deeper. The Agraparts place great im- portance on the proper technique and timing of pruning to control vineyard maladies, and some homeopathic treatments are also used in the vines to control para- sites. As expected for a Champagne estate that places a strong emphasis on viticulture, the average potential alcohol at harvest is very high here, normally around Status: RM 11 degrees, and Agrapart virtually never chaptalizes Vineyard area: 9.75 hectares any of his wines.

  • Why Buy Grower Champagne? Excerpts from a Seminar by Kevin Pike & Terry Theise “Champagne Is on the Verge of Profound Change
Why Buy Grower Champagne? Excerpts from a seminar by Kevin Pike & Terry Theise “Champagne is on the verge of profound change. There is a growing realization in the region that its viticulture has become slovenly and the subtleties of its terroir have been neglected. The era of great growers and great vineyards is just beginning.” —The New France, Andrew Jefford, 2002 The Champagne region in France is dominated by a handful of brand names. These négoçiants and coopératives produce 80% of the total output in Champagne, yet they only own 12% of the vineyards. They may, by law, purchase as much of their grapes or pressed juice or already made sparking wine (known as sur-lattes) as they wish from all over the region. They bring to market a mass produced commodity - the most successful processed agricultural product in human history - a Champagne made in a “house style.” This is a sparkling wine made in a highly interventionist and formulaic way with swift pressing, extensive use of chaptalization, acidifi cation, cultured yeast strains, enzymes, nitrogenous yeast nutrients and rapid temperature controlled fermentations. They produce many millions of cases annually. By contrast, Small Growers, or “récoltant-manipulants,” may purchase only 5% of their fruit and handcraft their limited quantities of Champagne from individual villages and parcels where the inherent qualities of the vineyards imprint themselves into the wines. These winemakers are brave souls in an industrialized age: growing, crafting and bottling their own Champagne, offering it to the world as their life’s work. They deserve your support. Problem: There’s only one “Champagne” While Champagne consists of one AOC it is one of the largest in France, totaling 34,000 hectares (84,000 acres).

Grand rosé brut GaMMe ANTIQUE TASTING NOTES FOR OVER FOUR CENTURIES “THE OLDEST WINE HOUSE IN CHAMPAGNE: AŸ 1584” HAS FORGED A STYLE THAT CELEBRATES FRENCH ART DE VIVRE. GRAND ROSÉ BRUT Cellar master Odilon de Varine comments: “This is a rosé with a high proportion of Chardonnay to create a Champagne that is equally at ease as an aperitif or with a meal. The Chardonnay gives freshness and precision and the addition of a little red wine from Bouzy and Ambonnay contribute fi ne fruit notes.” Vinifi ed and aged on lees to eliminate all risk of premature oxidation. Malolactic fermentation is carefully avoided in order to preserve all the natural fruit aromas of the wine and to allow the wines to undergo longer ageing. The red wines of Ambonnay and Bouzy give this rosé its delicate hue and lovely fruitiness. Brut dosage (8 g/l) to maintain the balance between freshness, fruit and vinosity without masking the wine’s personality and purity. Aged for a minimum of 3 years in the cellar at a constant temperature, well beyond the legal minimum of 15 months. APPEARANCE A soft swirl of rose petal pink with hints of salmon pink and cherry red highlights NOSE The nose is unmistakeably strawberry - in all its forms from freshly picked to strawberry jam. PALATE Well-structured, with a balance between the tension of the freshness and luscious red fruit dominance (wild strawberries and cream or coulis) softly envelop the palate, with a smooth, superbly fresh finish. PAIRING The richness and sweetness of the wine make it an excellent match for Foie gras, wild salmon, fi sh and seafood tapas, grilled veal, poultry, as well as red and forest fruits such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries.

  • Champagne August 2020
THE LONG AND WINDING RUE AUGUST 2020 GROWER CHAMPAGNE CLUB GROWER CHAMPAGNE NO.1 Larmandier-Bernier “Longitude” Extra Brut Premier Cru Chardonnay Côtes des Blancs, Champagne, France NV GROWER: The Larmandier and Bernier families have legacies in Champagne dating way back to the French revolution, but it was the marriage in 1971 of Philippe Larmandier to Elisabeth Bernier that Champagne Larmandier-Bernier, truly a mouthful in every way, was created. The next generation has taken over the tiny operation, and Pierre and Sophie Larmandier, along with their son Arthur, farm just under 45 acres throughout some of the finest sites in the Côte des Blancs: the grand crus Cramant, Chouilly, Oger and Avize, and in the premier cru they call home, Vertus. Pierre began farming organically in 1992 and converted the entire operation to biodynamic farming pretty early on in the movement in 1999. The L-B plantings are almost entirely Chardonnay, but they have a few acres of Pinot Noir, and even a wee holding of Pinot Gris. The “Longitude” bottling comes from vineyards that are all in somewhat of a straight line longitudinally, very close to the 4th meridian; but it is also a romantic allusion to the length and depth of the wine itself. Larmandier-Bernier wines are never sweetened above four grams per liter of dosage, putting all of their wines in the category of Extra Brut.
