Picking up sort of where the previous book left off only with the Thunderbolts completely out of the picturethe Dark Avengers are thrown into an alternate timeline where many of Marvel's greatest heroes are, get this, evil. An idea that's been done utterly to death, and in this instance offers only a mildly fresh take on the subject. Instead of having the alternate-universe heroes be fully evil, they're all essentially just territorial madmen. Still, for all intents and purposes, evil. The Dark Avengers take a big back seat to all of this nonsense that we inherently know will Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil matter in the long run, so there's no sense of peril or mounting tension. It's Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil a big list of "wouldn't it be cool ifs. I recommend his earlier stuff for sure, but you can ditch it after it turns into Dark Avengers for sure. Jul 21, Shannon Appelcline rated it really liked it Shelves: comicscomics-marvel. I must admit, I groaned when I realized that this was yet another dystopian Marvel future where the heroes have gone bad. Despite that, it turned out to be quite a good Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil. That's in part because Parker offered up some great characterization of our "Dark Avengers", in part because he offered up some surprising twists in the end, and in part because he offered up some real changes to the members of this crew. Now, we'll just have to see if those changes stick with future writers. View all 4 comments. Jeff Parker, who has written some wonderful books, ends the book with an arc that concentrates on other characters that will never be seen again. Sadly, nothing that made any of the Thunderbolts runs memorable is present here. The art, mostly by Neil Edwards, was better than the last volume as he really got creative with some of the alternate versions of some well-known heroes. Unfortunately, this book was a complete miss. This works just a little better than the first volume, but at the end of the day, it's a giant What If story and not much more than that. Feb 01, Anchorpete rated it really liked it. The most confusing thing to happen to me, while I was using my Marvel Unlimited account was losing track of the Thunderbolts issues, because they had retroactively renamed all of the Thunderbolts books, by Jeff Parker, Dark Avengers. I think Moonstone Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil the one character that has been around Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil the very beginning of the Thunderbolts, decades ago, and she has also been on the two different versions of the Dark Avengers team. This final trade, written by parker, is so over the top, it gets a bit hard to keep track of what is going on. It is ok, however, since Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil set up of the parallel earth is pretty compelling. Oh, you have seen it all before, Heroes becoming evil and fighting against each other. That is the cliche story behind the parallel Earth in this book. The pace never slows down, and one major event leads to another big concept, over and over again, without pausing for a breath. It seems to be a part of Parker's style, and is why I am a big fan of his. Sep 07, Sonic rated it liked it. Dick book. There are so many good ideas here and yet only a few can be developed, and more good ideas might take over before that happens. I liked Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil a lot, although I was lost the first few Dark Avengers: Masters of Evil thinking I had maybe missed a volume, but it was cleared up pretty fast. A team this big has a lot of characters and it's hard to really get to know them all, but I felt this volume did a good of at least showing the reader a little more about most of them. And the book ends with them definitely in a place that's not as morally dubious, although still in the grey. Jun 06, Alexandria rated it it was ok Shelves: graphic-novels. I think I would have liked this more if I had read up on the concept of the Dark Avengers before picking up this volume. As it stands, I was unimpressed with the concept: clones or relatives of Avengers seek to ruin their image by impersonating them and being evil. His researches seem to them a waste of time and energy. Interest in ancestors, love of family and kindred, those subtle questions of race, origin, even of life itself, which they involve, are quite beyond their com prehension. They live only in the present, care nothing for the past and little for the future; for " he who cares not whence he cometh, cares not whither he goeth." When such persons are approached with questions of ancestry, they retire to their stronghold of apathy; and the querist learns, without diffi culty, that whether their ancestors were vile or illustrious, virtuous or vicious, or whether, indeed, they ever had any, is to them a matter of supreme indifference.

Read Ebook {PDF EPUB} Thunderbolts Justice Like Lightning... by Kurt Busiek Thunderbolts #1 was the greatest trick Marvel Comics ever pulled. On March 10 Marvel launched a new mutant team in its long-awaited Children of the Atom #1 (which was delayed a year by COVID-19). But not all is as it seems (or was advertised) with the Children of the Atom, with the issue ending in a twist reveal about the heroes' identities. This isn't the first time Marvel has managed to hold on to a secret about a new 'superhero' team. Almost 25 years ago (in 1997 to be exact – mark your calendars to celebrate next year), Marvel capitalized on the absence of teams such as the Avengers and Fantastic Four who were then trapped in the Heroes Reborn dimension by building up a high-profile new team of superheroes called the Thunderbolts. (Incidentally, this year marks the 25th anniversary of Heroes Reborn, which Marvel is celebrating by reviving the title's branding for a new summer event). Created by writer Kurt Busiek and artist Mark Bagley, the Thunderbolts were led by Citizen V, an updated version of a Golden Age Marvel hero, and promised to deliver "Justice Like Lightning" (according to their tagline), to Avengers-level villains and threats. Marvel built the new team up as a group on par with Earth's Mightiest Heroes, ready to step up and save the world in the Avengers' absence. But Thunderbolts #1 ended with its own massive twist reveal about the true nature of the heroes of the Thunderbolts (spoiler alert: they were not new characters at all, but ones readers already knew – we'll get into it).
