Leacock's Rainwater
RAINWATER Leacock’s Madeira was established in 1760 and in 1925 formed the original Madeira Wine Association in partnership with Blandy’s Madeira. In 1989, the Symington family, renowned fourth generation Port producers, entered a partnership with Leacock’s in what had then become the Madeira Wine Company, which also represents Blandy’s, Cossart Gordon and Miles. The Blandy's family have continued to run Leacock's in the 21st century. THE WINEMAKING Fermentation off the skins with natural yeast at temperatures between 75°F and 78°F, in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks; fortification with grape brandy after approximately four days, arresting fermentation at the desired degree of sweetness. Leacock’s Rainwater was transferred to ‘estufa’ tanks where the wine underwent a cyclic heating and cooling process between 113°F and 122°F over a period of 3 months. After ‘estufagem’ the wine was aged for three years in American oak casks. The wine then underwent racking and fining before the blend was assembled and bottled. TASTING NOTE Topaz color with golden reflections. Characteristic Madeira bouquet of dried fruits, orange peels and notes of wood. Medium dry at first, followed by an attractive freshness of citrus flavors, with a long, luxurious finish. WINEMAKER STORAGE & SERVING Francisco Albuquerque Leacock’s Rainwater is excellent as an after dinner drink and also very GRAPE VARIETAL good with fruit, chocolate, cakes and Tinta Negra hard cheeses. TO THE GOLD COAST FOR GOLD A PERSONAL NARRATIVE VOL. I. BY RICHARD F. BURTON PREFACE. The following extract from 'Wanderings in West Africa,' a book which I wrote in 1862 and published (anonymously) in 1863, will best explain the reasons which lately sent me to Western Africa:— In several countries, for instance, Dinkira, Tueful, Wásá (Wassaw), and especially Akim, the hill-region lying north of Accra, the people are still active in digging gold. The pits, varying from two to three feet in diameter, and from twelve to fifty deep (eighty feet is the extreme), are often so near the roads that loss of life has been the result. 'Shoring up' being little known, the miners are not unfrequently buried alive. The stuff is drawn up by ropes in clay pots, or calabashes, and thus a workman at the bottom widens the pit to a pyriform shape; tunnelling, however, is unknown. The excavated earth is carried down to be washed. Besides sinking these holes, they pan in the beds of rivers, and in places collect quartz, which is roughly pounded. They (the natives) often refuse to dig deeper than the chin, for fear of the earth 'caving in;' and, quartz-crushing and the use of quicksilver being unknown, they will not wash unless the gold 'show colour' to the naked eye. As we advance northwards from the Gold Coast the yield becomes richer…. It is becoming evident that Africa will one day equal half-a-dozen Californias…. Will our grandsons believe in these times … that this Ophir—that this California, where every river is a Tmolus and a Pactolus, every hillock is a gold-field—does not contain a cradle, a puddling-machine, a quartz-crusher, a pound of mercury? That half the washings are wasted because quicksilver is unknown? That whilst convict labour is attainable, not a company has been formed, not a surveyor has been sent out? I exclaim with Dominie Sampson—'Pro-di-gious!' Western Africa was the first field that supplied the precious metal to mediaeval Europe. -

Its landscape displays a perfect continuum and symbiosis between sea and forest, mountains and valleys. Writing about Madeira is to reveal its roots, its culture and its traditions. Blandy's Vintage Malmsey 1977
1977 VINTAGE MALMSEY THE FAMILY The Blandy’s family is unique for being the only family of all the original founders of the Madeira wine trade to still own and manage their original wine company. The family has played a leading role in the development of Madeira wine since the early nineteenth century. Blandy’s Madeira remains totally dedicated to the traditions, care, and craftsmanship of Madeira Wine for over 200 years. THE WINEMAKING The wine was aged for 41 years in old American oak casks at Quinta das Maravilhas in Funchal. “We bought the stock of wine after being presented with samples that far exceeded our expectations in terms of quality, freshness and complexity. Vintage Malmseys, when aged in the right location, have the ability to develop that natural richness into deep layers of aromas and flavors. The wine, after the years that it spent at the Zino’s family Quinta, benefited from the specific micro climate at that altitude. After we bought the wine, we held it at our winery in Caniçal before finally being bottled in May 2018.” This as the only wine produced and aged at Quinta das Maravilhas as subsequent harvests were sold as grapes to the Madeira Wine Association until the vineyard ceased to be productive. TASTING NOTE Dark mohogany color with golden refletions. A characteristic aroma of madeira wine, having prenaunced notes of exotic woods, dried and crystallized fruits and spices. On the mouth its full boddied, smooth, sweet releasing notes of dark chocolate, spices and tabaco, and has a long aftertaste with notes of fruitcake, molasses and spices. -

This region is situated in the northeast of Portugal, in the Douro hydrographical basin, surrounded by mountains that give it exclusive mesologic, climacteric and agrologic characteristics that enable the production of quality wines. Port wine is the most successful of all Portuguese wines throughout the years, home and abroad. This article aims at characterizing and analysing the positioning of the Port Wine brand in the context of Portuguese wine brands, and to define strategies for this brand. In order to achieve this, indicators and management tools such as SWOT Analysis, General Electric/McKinsey Matrix and Porter Generic Strategies were used. From the analysis it can be understood that the Port Wine brand occupies a favourable position in the wine market with an important role in the national economy, and as such it should be ever more promoted and its potential further reinforced abroad to make the most of its brand value and potential for the brand, the country and other national wines. -
