Dear Colleagues! XIV April international academic conference on economic and social development organised by HSE will begin as usual with a plenary session, with the participation of the leaders of the economic block in the Government and the Presidential Administration of Russia. Plenary sessions will focus on special topics of the conference. There are two of them, “Global economic crisis and Russian economy” and “Institutions and new social policy”. We expect a lively debate at out first plenary meeting that should extend the concept of the global economy, and what impact it will have on Russia. The second plenary session will be dedicated to the changes in Russian social sphere, problems and changes over which we have to work with. We invited to participate at the plenary sessions famous foreign scientists such as Kaushik Basu, Senior Vice President for Development Economics and World Bank Chief Economist, former Chief Economic Adviser to the Government of India; and Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education in the Centre for the Study of Higher Education at the University of Melbourne. It is worth noting that the number of foreign participants continues to grow year by year. We also organise a special seminar with the SEARCH project within a framework of the conference this year - Sharing KnowledgE Assets: InteRregionally Cohesive NeigHborhoods. This project is implemented as part of the EU’s 7th framework programme and includes seventeen universities from different European countries. The project focuses on complex analysis of interaction mechanisms between EU countries and their members, including mutual trade and capital flow, migration streams, technology exchange, and creation of a joint system of values. Four HSE departments take an active part in the SEARCH project: the institute for statistical studies and economics of knowledge, the institute for industrial and market studies, the institute of demography, and the laboratory for socio-cultural research. The conference will also includes Yegor Gaidar Prize awarding ceremony for young economists established by Yegor Gaidar Foundation. This ceremony calls to promote Russian economic science and integration of young Russian scientists into the international scientific community. We have organised special sessions and round tables discussion as a separate section this year which represent the most relevant and important topics including pension reform, the state of the expert- analytical community, the quality of scientific journals in economics, the measurement of the investment climate. I wish you all an interesting discussion!
