Burton ABSTRACT Founded as a quasi-utopian society by New England evangelists, Oberlin became the central hub of extreme social reform in Ohio’s Western Reserve. Scholars have looked at Oberlin from political and cultural perspectives, but have placed little emphasis on religion. That is to say, although religion is a major highlight of secondary scholarship, few have placed the community appropriately in the dynamic of the East and West social reform movement. Historians have often ignored, or glossed over this important element and how it represented the divergence between traditional orthodoxy in New England and Middle-Atlantic states, and the new religious hybrids found in the West. -

DuBois, Chair Although devoted to insuring universal freedom and human rights for more than 60 years, Henry B. Stanton’s historical legacy and his many contributions to antebellum reform have been obscured and even vilified in the shadows of his famous wife, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, and his oftentimes tactical opponent within abolition circles, William Lloyd Garrison. Frequently portrayed as the antagonist in his wife’s struggle for women’s rights, as a husband and a father Henry Stanton has become synonymous in the historical discourse with the very oppression his wife devoted her life to ending. Because of this, Elizabeth’s reformism is frequently depicted as having emerged from an imagined unhappy domestic life, rather than from an awareness of social and political inequalities. -
“Blessings of Liberty” for All: Lysander Spooner's Originalism
SECURING THE “BLESSINGS OF LIBERTY” FOR ALL: LYSANDER SPOONER’S ORIGINALISM Helen J. Knowles* ABSTRACT On January 1, 1808, legislation made it illegal to import slaves into the United States.1 Eighteen days later, in Athol, Massachusetts, Ly- sander Spooner was born. This article draws on material from papers presented at the annual meetings of the Northeastern Political Science Association and the New England Historical Association, and builds on ideas originally discussed at the Institute for Constitutional Studies (ICS) Summer Seminar on Slavery and the Constitution and an Institute for Humane Studies An- nual Research Colloquium. Finney began a career in ministry that was to have far- reaching implications for the religious as well as the civil life of the people of the United States. In July of that year he was ordained by the Presbytery of St. Lawrence, and assigned as a missionary to the little towns of Evans Mills and Antwerp in Jefferson County, New York. Under the vivid preaching of this ex-lawyer a wave of revivalism began to sweep through the whole region.^ Following the revival of 1824-27, Finney carried the religious awakening into Philadelphia, New York City, and Rochester, New York. -

Racism in Antebellum Vermont Neither Vermont’s constitutional prohibition of adult slavery nor Judge Theophilus Harrington’s famous application of that provision ever really precluded the Green Mountain State from those expressions of racism that existed all over New England and beyond. By John M. Lovejoy wo historical events appear to have established Vermont’s re- sponse to questions about slavery and the existence of racism Tin the state. The first occurred in Windsor in July 1777, when the Vermont Constitution was adopted. It was the first state constitution to declare adult slavery unlawful within its borders. The second event took place in Middlebury at the Addison County Court House in June 1804, when the Honorable Theophilus Harrington, junior member of the three- judge Supreme Court panel, speaking for the court, declared that slave ownership in Vermont could only be proved by the production in evi- dence of a bill of sale for the slave signed by Almighty God, Himself. The court’s practical application of the law prohibiting slavery set for- ever the height of the “bar” over which challengers would have to jump. From that day forward no jumpers applied. The original thirteen colonies had a substantial accumulation of laws on their books, as well as spoken and unspoken codes, relating to ne- groes, mulattos, and Indians and, in several instances, to slavery itself.1 Vermont patterned a substantial portion of its constitution after that of Pennsylvania.2 However, because Vermont lawmakers were relatively unburdened by an existing legal history and its accompanying tapestry of laws, codes, and precedent-setting opinions, the drafting of the Ver- mont Constitution was a simpler process than in most of the other states. -

ACTUARY HALL OF FAME: ELIZUR WRIGHT Elizur Wright must be counted among the most famous actuaries of all times. Here is his entry from The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition, 2001. Elizur Wright, 1804–85, American actuary and antislavery leader, born near Canaan, Connecticut, graduated Yale, 1826. He taught (1829–33) mathematics at Western Reserve College. In 1833 he became corresponding secretary of the American Anti-Slavery Society, a post he left (1839) to assume editorship of the Massachusetts Abolitionist. While editing (1846–52) the Boston Weekly Chronotype he became interested in life insurance reform and began lobbying in the Massachusetts legislature. Through his efforts an act was passed (1858) compelling insurance companies to hold reserve funds to be applied against policies. Two later rulings—the nonforfeiture law of 1861 forbidding a company to appropriate the reserve funds and the legislation (1880) that requires companies to pay in cash the value of lapsed policies—were also directly due to Wright. He served (1858–66) as state supervisor for insurance legislation before taking positions as a private actuary. His vigorous campaigning in this field as well as his development of actuarial tabulations earned him the title “father of life insurance.” This little piece falls far short of doing justice to Wright’s contributions. The work of Halley (1600s) and Price (1700s) set up the mathematical basis for insurance, but those ideas did not extend to the notion of managing a large insurance firm. The concept of a reserve was not obvious, and it took people like Elizur Wright to force the ideas on insurance firms.
