They along with my other faculty colleagues, Gary Smith and Joy Summer-Smith, and our administrative assistant Marcia Cooper have made the transition to teaching and to Baylor a delight. The Museum Studies department shares space with the Mayborn Museum Complex. As a result, I have the gift of working with an outstanding group of museum professionals. I appreciate the support and friendship of Anita Benedict and Denise Seaman, in particular. I am especially grateful to Tom Haddad for the thoughtfully designed monkey diorama he left on my desk during a particularly stressful period. I know he did not act alone. I have benefitted as well from my students in the MST program. Our discussions inside and outside the classroom have shaped my thinking about this project and my development as a teacher and scholar. One group of students in particular played an important role in my transformation from museum administrator to teacher — Ca-Caw! Haynes Abstention from slave-labor products, along with petitioning, was a popular and consistent form of anti-slavery activism for British and American abolitionists, especially women. Despite renewed interest in the British and American free-produce movements, historians continue to focus on either eighteenth- or nineteenth-century British or American abstention, only briefly referring to the transatlantic and generational connections between the movements. Limiting questions about free-produce in this way overemphasizes the connection between abstention and the Society of Friends and privileges the nineteenth-century period of the movement. While Quakers were the primary proponents of abstention from slave-labor products, attempts by both Quakers x and non-Quakers to establish an international free-produce movement are essential to understanding transatlantic abolitionism. This dissertation recovers and critically interprets the transatlantic free-produce movement from the late-eighteenth through the mid-nineteenth century, revealing the key role women played in the protracted battle for the abolition of slavery. Recognizing the importance of abstention to the abolitionist movement broadens the period of women’s activism to the eighteenth century, more than forty years prior to the organizational activity of the 1830s that serves as the traditional starting point for histories of women’s abolitionism. Abstention reveals the ways in which British and American women crossed generational, gender, geographic, religious as well as class and racial boundaries on behalf of the slave. This study places abstention and abolitionism within the context of the market revolution, examining abstainers’ debates about the morality of the marketplace. Rather than political economy, abstainers urged Britons and Americans alike to create a moral economy, which privileged humanity and justice over financial profit.

Debates about abolition of slavery have essentially focused on two interrelated questions: 1) whether nineteenth and early twentieth century abolitions were a major breakthrough compared to previous centuries (or even millennia) in the history of humankind during which bondage had been the dominant form of labour and human condition. 2) whether they express an action specific to western bourgeoisie and liberal civilization. It is true that the number of abolitionist acts and the people concerned throughout the extended nineteenth century (1780- 1914) had no equivalent in history: 30 million Russian peasants, half a million slaves in Saint- Domingue in 1790, four million slaves in the US in 1860, another million in the Caribbean (at the moment of the abolition of 1832-40), a further million in Brazil in 1885 and 250,000 in the Spanish colonies were freed during this period.

    Religions and the abolition of slavery - a comparative approach William G. Clarence-Smith Economic historians tend to see religion as justifying servitude, or perhaps as ameliorating the conditions of slaves and serving to make abolition acceptable, but rarely as a causative factor in the evolution of the ‘peculiar institution.’ In the hallowed traditions, slavery emerges from scarcity of labour and abundance of land. This may be a mistake. If culture is to humans what water is to fish, the relationship between slavery and religion might be stood on its head. It takes a culture that sees certain human beings as chattels, or livestock, for labour to be structured in particular ways. If religions profoundly affected labour opportunities in societies, it becomes all the more important to understand how perceptions of slavery differed and changed. It is customary to draw a distinction between Christian sensitivity to slavery, and the ingrained conservatism of other faiths, but all world religions have wrestled with the problem of slavery. Moreover, all have hesitated between sanctioning and condemning the 'embarrassing institution.' Acceptance of slavery lasted for centuries, and yet went hand in hand with doubts, criticisms, and occasional outright condemnations. Hinduism The roots of slavery stretch back to the earliest Hindu texts, and belief in reincarnation led to the interpretation of slavery as retribution for evil deeds in an earlier life. Servile status originated chiefly from capture in war, birth to a bondwoman, sale of self and children, debt, or judicial procedures. Caste and slavery overlapped considerably, but were far from being identical. Brahmins tried to have themselves exempted from servitude, and more generally to ensure that no slave should belong to 1 someone from a lower caste.

    The Writings of Ladies' Abolitionist Societies in Britain, 1825-1833 Anna Wood "In taking a view of the means which may be employed with advantage to effect the mitigation and ultimate extinction of NEGRO SLAVERY, it would be unpardonable to overlook THE LADIES OF THE UNITED KINGDOM, of all classes, and especially of the upper ranks, who have now an opportunity of exerting themselves beneficially in behalf of the most deeply injured of the human race." 1 On April 8, 1825, in the home of Lucy Townsend, the wife of an Anglican clergyman, forty four women gathered to establish the first women's anti-slavery society in Britain. Its initial name was the Ladies Society for the Relief of Negro Slaves, but later adopted the name Female Society for Birmingham. This society was committed to the "Amelioration of the Condition of the Unhappy Children of Africa, and especially of Female Negro Slaves."2 This formation preceded that of the first abolition society in the United States, the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, by seven years.3 The Birmingham society actively helped other societies form through various religious network connections.     Meetings for Learning – Resources – History and Testimonies Lucretia Mott (1793-1880) Early Life and Influences Lucretia Coffin (Mott) was born on 3rd January, 1793 in Nantucket Island, a whaling community. The men were at sea for long periods of time, and the women had to be quite independent. Lucretia attended Nine Partners Boarding School, a Quaker school which Elias Hicks actively supported. When she had completed her education in the school, she was kept on as a teacher. Her pay as a teacher was half the pay of a male teacher. She saw the injustice of it and she decided that in her life she would do everything in her power to have her fair and 1 equal share of everything which she felt sure that God had provided for her in the world. She married another teacher, James Mott on 10th April 1811, and they went to live in Philadelphia with his parents. When her son Thomas died of fever in 1817, it was a major trauma in her life, and she turned much more deeply and seriously to her Religion. She was formally recognized as a Quaker Minister in January 1821, when she was 28 years old. During her life, she was actively involved in a very wide range of reform issues and movements. She read widely, and wrote letters to her many correspondents. She was influenced by Mary Wollstonecraft (1759- 1797) and her pioneering book, Vindication of the Rights of Women. Dr William Channing, a popular Congregationalist Minister, who preached consistently against war, was another major influence on her.

The reader is assumed to have not only an interest but a communion. A writer on the history of any cause or group should have suffi- cient objectivity to relate his subject to its environment with- out distortion; but if he is to give life to it, he must be a con- frere. The general public, standing afar off, may desire more detachment in its author; but if it gets this, it gets it at the expense of vision, warmth, and life. There can be, indeed, no absolute objectivity in an expository historian. The painter and interpreter of any great movement must be in sympathy with the spirit and aim of that movement; it must be his cause. What he loses in equipoise he gains in momentum, and bal- ance is more a matter of drive than of teetering. This history of Seventh-day Adventists is written by one who is an Adventist, who believes in the message and mission of Adventists, and who would have everyone to be an Advent- ist.
