Broadway Starts to Rock: Musical Theater Orchestrations and Character, 1968-1975 By Elizabeth Sallinger M.M., Duquesne University, 2010 B.A., Pennsylvania State University, 2008 Submitted to the graduate degree program in Musicology and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Chair: Paul R. Laird Roberta Freund Schwartz Bryan Kip Haaheim Colin Roust Leslie Bennett Date Defended: 5 December 2016 ii The dissertation committee for Elizabeth Sallinger certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Broadway Starts to Rock: Musical Theater Orchestrations and Character, 1968-1975 Chair: Paul R. Laird Date Approved: 5 December 2016 iii Abstract In 1968, the sound of the Broadway pit was forever changed with the rock ensemble that accompanied Hair. The musical backdrop for the show was appropriate for the countercultural subject matter, taking into account the popular genres of the time that were connected with such figures, and marrying them to other musical styles to help support the individual characters. Though popular styles had long been part of Broadway scores, it took more than a decade for rock to become a major influence in the commercial theater. The associations an audience had with rock music outside of a theater affected perception of the plot and characters in new ways and allowed for shows to be marketed toward younger demographics, expanding the audience base. Other shows contemporary to Hair began to include rock music and approaches as well; composers and orchestrators incorporated instruments such as electric guitar, bass, and synthesizer, amplification in the pit, and backup singers as components of their scores.

  • Strange Brew√ Re-Exploring Seminal Rock Music | Edition 05 | Friday January 26 2007
M i c h a e l W a d d a c o r ‘ s πStrange Brew Re-exploring seminal rock music | Edition 05 | Friday January 26 2007 Revolver : Thirty-five glorious minutes of Fabulous adventure and innovation An appreciation of a seminal psychedelic masterpiece Michael W addacor revisits the album many critics and fans regard as the greatest rock album of the last five decades. Three years into British Beatlemania, it seemed as if The Beatles in 1965 could do nothing wrong. The Fab Four recorded and released two excellent albums, Help and Rubber Soul. Both albums proved one certain fact: Lennon, McCartney, Harrison and Starr were improving as writers, musicians, arrangers and ideators with each successive album and showing greater degrees of wit, originality and musical distinction. Similarly, George Martin was evolving in leaps and bounds as one of the most imaginative and daring music producers of the 1960s. By this time, however, there were fans and critics who wondered if anyone, let alone The Beatles, could top the performance of Rubber Soul. With the release Front cover of The Beatles‘ Revolver album, based on in August 1966 of Revolver, The Beatles fast quelled a collage by Klaus Voormann (1966) any arguments about their culture of continuously improving creativity. Today, many Beatles Nineteen sixty-six was a watershed year enthusiasts rate this is as the band‘s best album. I for rock music œ a period of heightened shall settle on Revolver being a Top Five Beatles creativity marked by the release of several album along with Abbey Road, The Beatles, Sgt seminal albums, among them key works Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band and Rubber Soul.

  • Understanding ‗It': Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish
Understanding ‗It‘: Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish Scene By C2010 Elizabeth Anne Yeager Submitted to the graduate degree program in American Studies and the Graduate Faculty of the University of Kansas in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie J. Tucker ________________________________ Ben Chappell ________________________________ Henry Bial ________________________________ Eric Weisbard ________________________________ Nicole Hodges Persley Date Defended: December 14, 2010 ii The Dissertation Committee for Elizabeth Anne Yeager certifies that this is the approved version of the following dissertation: Understanding ‗It‘: Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish Scene ________________________________ Chairperson, Sherrie J. Tucker Date approved: April 18, 2011 iii Abstract ―Understanding It: Affective Authenticity, Space, and the Phish Scene‖ is an ethnographic study of ―scene identity‖ around the contemporary rock band Phish. Utilizing data generated from six years of ethnographic fieldwork, including over one hundred and fifty interviews with Phish scene participants, this project explores how the production of space at Phish shows works to form a Phish scene identity. I contend that the identity of the Phish scene, what the band members and fans refer to as ―it‖ and I call a spatial articulation of affective authenticity, is produced and formed by scene members themselves, drawing from the interrelations between the production of space (practices that create a specific environment) at shows and a white, middle and upper-middle class cultural memory of the Grateful Dead scene. I situate this process amidst a cultural backdrop of 1980s and 1990s identity politics and in particular, multiculturalism and suggest that Phish scene identity be analyzed as a middle class performance of resistance that achieves community and meaning without resisting class privilege.

Last Update: 14/4/13 – Changes & additions since the December 2010 version highlighted thusly 1936 Robert Johnson The Complete Recordings 1937 By universal acknowledgment, the greatest of the Old Masters of acoustic blues. It’s said that Eric Clapton wouldn’t even talk to you in the 1960s if you were not au fait with Robert Johnson. This is one of the exceptions in which I’ve allowed a “best of” compilation. I just had to in this case. There weren’t any albums in the 30s. 1959 Miles Davis Kind Of Blue He could play the trumpet a bit. This is arguably the best known full-on jazz album of all time. It had just enjoyed its 40 th anniversary on first compilation of this list. I’m not qualified to write about Miles Davis, but this I know. Despite his tetchy character, especially in defence of blacks against the white establishment (understandably), he did not come from a typical poor black background. His family were quite affluent and middle class, in as far as it was possible for blacks to be middle class in the US at that time. 1964 John Coltrane A Love Supreme He could play the sax a bit. The album was the result of Coltrane’s sudden religious awakening in 1957. Brilliant – apart from the embarrassing vocals. You're getting jazz and old-time blues up to '64 because The Great Musical Reinvention had not yet happened - but it was just around the corner... 1965 Jackson C Frank Jackson C Frank Aficionados know that this is the best folk album of all time.
