Dennis McLaughlin's squad was 5-0 in league action during 1971, defeating Blair (26-0), Rosemead (21-14), and Pasadena (lO-O) on the way to the '71 crown. Amat is the first "AAAA" repeater since Loyola's title-winners of 1962-63* Amat stretched its win streak to 16 straight in 1971, 12 wins coming this season. VINCE FERRAGAMO, BANNING QUARTERBACK, IS

NAMED L.A. CITY FOOTBALL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

IT required but brief debate on the part of United Savings Helms Athletic Foundation board members to name Banning High School1s star quarterback as Los Angeles City Football Player of the Year for the 1971 season. The vote was near unanimous, the only other support going to a co-Player of the Year selection of Ferragamo and Carson's Mike I:inlure, #10 led the Colts to the Los Angele3 City Football Championship. Ferragamo and McClure had been named co Marine League Players of the Year in voting among Marine Loop coaches. Vinca Ferragamo, a 6-2, 206-pound senior and brother of the Banning head coach Chris Ferragamo, had imposing statistics over the 1971 season. He completed 125 of 211 aerials for 1,979 yards and 20 , adding four more TDs running the hall. He had just under a 60$ completion average. Under Ferragamo's leader ship, Banning wound up 4-1 on the season and 7-3 the complete season. Defeat ing Crenshaw 2 6 -6 in the playoff's first round, the Pilots dropped a tough 23-22 encounter to Bell in a tie-breaker ending. FERRAGAMO, ALONG WITH ALL-CITY PLAYERS, TO BB HONORED AT 22HD ANNUAL PRO BOWL GAME AT L.A. MEMORIAL COLISEUM, SUNDAY, JAN. 23RD

Players named to the All-Los Angeles City Football Teams for 1971, along with their coaches, will be the guests of the Los Angeles Newspaper Pub lishers Association at the annual Pro Bowl Game to be played between the National and American Cinferenee all-stars of the NFL. Players of the Year, offensive and defensive team players and coaohes will be honored on the field prior to the start of the game. This will mark the first time in the 35-year history of All-Southern California Board of Football that awards ceremonies will have been held on the Memorial Coliseum turf.....where many of the Southland's famed high school all-star team members went on to play their college and professional football. It is interesting to note that Pro Bowl Game co-Director Glenn Davis was Southern California's Hi^i School Player of the Year in 1942. The Bonita High School record holder (scored 237 points his senior season to set long-standing record for scoring), went on to Army and then played for the .

Although Vince Ferragamo nailed down individual honors in Los Angeles City play for the 1971 season, it remained for Gene Vollnogle's Carson Colts to nab team laurels. The Marine League Champions, steaming through regular and playoff season exercises without a loss (l?-0), placed eleven players on the offensive and defen sive units as selected by All-Los Angeles City Board of Football. Bach of the per formers who were named to the All-Marine Loop teams found a place on the All-City all-star squads. Most of the Los Angeles City Hign Schools are represented by at least one player. Eanning, Monroe, Bell, Cleveland and Wilson placed five players on the honor teams, while Fremont landed four. Franklin and Wilson High Schools, which ran one-two in Northern League foot ball in 1971, each placed eight players on the all-league offensive and defensive elevens as teams were released by United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation. United/ Helms board members and league coaches cooperated in the selection of the teams as they have over the past 35 years. Both Franklin (5-0 for the league season) and Wilson (4-1 ) had a Player of the Year selection on this year's All-Northern contingent. The Franklin Panthers' Mike Silva, halfback and linebacker, was named for top-player honors along with Wilson High's fine two-way back Henry Longoria. Both players will be recipients of United/ Helms Board medallions recognizing them for their co-Player of the Year selection. Rounding out the league finishers were Eagle Rock (3-2), Lincoln (2-3 ), Marsh all (1-4 ) and Belmont (0-5). Eastern League runner-up Garfield edged Franklin in the first round of the playoffs, 27-20 in a tie-breaking extra set of downs, while Wilson was edged by Eastern League champion Bell, 14-13. Chester Lemon, ooach Virgil Grant's ace defensive hack for the league-champion Fremont Pathfinders, was acclaimed Southern League Player of the Year as annual all league selections were released today by United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation. At 6 feet and 185 pounds, Lemon was a devastating defender for the Pathfinders and was one of four Fremont defensemen who helped their team to a perfect 5-0 loop sea son. Dorsey's Dons led the league in placing men on the two units....five on offense and two on defense, with title-winning Fremont and third place finisher Manual Arts landing six players each. Two players repeated off last year's first offensive team, while one is hack from the '70 defensive unit. It was Fremont (5-0), Dorsey (4—1) and Manual Arts (3-2) leading the way through a tough Southern League race, with Los Angeles (2-3), Jefferson (1-4 ) and Washington (0-5) finishing among the also-rans. Both Southern League playoff teams did well in the first round, as champion Fre mont disposed of Verdugo Hills 28-7 and Dorsey dumped No. Hollywood 30-6. In the second round, however, Fremont was tripped by Monroe, 15-13, as Carson caught Dorsey, 21-6. All-league teams, released through United Savings/Helms Athletic Foundation, are picked through the cooperative effort of league coaches and United/Helms Board members. Players named for honors receive special scroll awards, delivered to eaoh school's coach for presentation to the honored athletes. * * *
