I have to extend a special thank you to both Ron Orr and Mara Redden for their continued dedication of this event over the past 36 years. Although their actions are silent, they are heard loudly around the country. I would also like to thank the Swim With Mike Board Of Directors, our volunteers, student staff, swimmers and fundraisers. Their time, involvement, input and overwhelming support are what have kept this program growing. To those who are able to donate, large and small, it’s because of you that we have been able to help over 187 Physically Challenged Athletes receive a college education so they can create a future for themselves. I would like to extend a special thank you to Pat Haden and the USC Athletic Department for their vision and support to continue the expansion of this one-of-a-kind program, along with the other Universities that are now a part of our Swim With Mike family. Finally, thank you to our incredible recipients and their remarkable families, whose courage and determination keep us all grounded. These recipients continue to inspire us daily. Without the combination of all of the above mentioned, the past 36 years would not have been possible to accomplish the following: • $16,817,930 Total raised since inception • $900,000 Total scholarship dollars awarded in 2015-16 • 57 Current scholarship recipients in 2015-2016 • 187 Total scholarships granted • 60 Total sports represented • 91 Total universities represented Sincerely, Mike Nyeholt 4 Swim With Mike Mission Statement To provide financial resources for the advanced education that paves the way for physically challenged athletes to overcome their tragedies and realize their full potential. Established in 1981, Swim With Mike was started following what was planned as a one-time event: a Swim-a-thon organized by former teammates of Mike Nyeholt. Mike, a three-time All American swimmer at USC who graduated in 1978, ranked ninth in the U.S., 13th in the world and a competitor in the 1976 Olympic trials, was paralyzed from the chest down following a motorcycle accident in January 1981. The first event was held in March of 1981 as Swim For Mike, to raise money to purchase a specially equipped van for Mike. The Swim-a-thon was highly successful, raising $58,000; significantly more than was needed for the van. At Mike’s suggestion, the excess funds were used to create the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund, the only one of its kind in the country. Since 1981 Swim With Mike has become an annual event held at Uytengsu Aquastics Center at USC. The annual event will be held at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on the USC campus. Recently, the University of Connecticut, Arizona, UCSD, Roll with Cole, Hawaii, The Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, El Toro High School, UCSB, Cal and Stanford have held satellite Swim With Mike events to raise money for the USC Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund. Potential recipients are located through media outreach, USC community members, Swim With Mike Board members and supporters, rehabilitation facilities, hospitals and the USC Admissions and Financial Aid offices. When volunteers come across information about newly injured athletes, they make initial contact to introduce the Scholarship Fund and determine the possible interest in pursuing or continuing university education. Eligibility requirements for scholarships are applicants must: • Have participated in organized athletics prior to the illness or injury • Have suffered an illness or injury resulting in a physical disability which, substantially limits every day activity (e.g. paralysis, blindness, cancer, amputation, head injury) • Meet the admission requirements of a four year or graduate level institution • Make satisfactory progress towards their degree after college acceptance • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5 cumulative and be “in good academic standing” • Demonstrate financial need For more information visit: www.swimwithmike.org or email [email protected] 5 Patrick C. Haden Director of Athletics Charles Griffin Cale Director of Athletics’ Chair April 2, 2016 Welcome to the 36th Annual Swim With Mike. As Trojan alumni, Cindy and I are always proud of the incredible accomplishments of USC’s student-athletes on the field, the courts, in the pool and in the classroom. Perhaps even more so we are humbled by the Trojan Family’s association with Swim With Mike and the Physically Challenged Athletes Scholarship Fund which is unique, long lasting and selfless. As Director of Athletics I appreciate that our staff and student-athletes dedicate so much of their time and treasure helping other athletes who due to their physical limitations could not get an athletic scholarship but can compete in the classroom. We are so thankful to all of those who have worked so hard and financially supported the efforts to make the Uytengsu Aquatics Center a reality and a world class facility that will serve as headquarters for Swim With Mike for many years to come. The scholarship fund that Ron Orr and Mike Nyeholt started 36 years ago has helped 187 athletes who were victims of life altering injuries or illnesses get a college education, the key to an independent and prosperous future. Seventy of these students attend or attended USC. Perhaps even more remarkable is the fact that Swim With Mike scholarship recipients have attended 90 different schools from coast to coast thanks to the hard work and dedication of thousands of volunteers, swimmers, sponsors and donors, many of them USC student-athletes. Can you believe that Swim With Mike scholarship recipients have attended USC’s Pac -12 rivals Arizona (10), Arizona State (2), Cal (3), Colorado (3), Oregon (1), UCSB, Stanford (5) Washington State (1), Oregon State (1) and yes even UCLA (2)? What about the fact that Stanford, Cal, Arizona, UCONN, UCSB, El Toro High School and UC San Diego host Swim With Mike events on their campuses organized by the scholarship recipients themselves along with the coaches and student-athletes at those institutions? In the 2015-16 academic year Swim With Mike sponsors 57 scholarships at 41 different schools. Thanks to all of you who participate in Swim With Mike here at USC or at the Rose Bowl Aquatics Center, UC Berkeley, UC San Diego, Stanford, Hawaii, UCONN, Arizona, UCSB, Roll with Cole and in all of the other fundraising activities. I won’t be swimming (I can barely float!) but my check is already written and I will be cheering for all of you. Fight On! Patrick C. Teranishi, Chair American colleges and universities attract nearly one million international students each year to their higher education institutions. Reasons for the high demand of American degree and certificate programs include a major boost in one’s social, cultural, and economic capital. Expansive alumni connections, world-class skills training, and enhanced job prospects and opportunities, both domestically and internationally, are made accessible to graduates from American institutions of higher education (IHE). At the same time, choosing to enter a new foreign environment in the United States involves major social and cultural changes as well as financial demands. Universities are at the nexus of marketing to, accepting, welcoming, and providing education to this invaluable part of American campus communities. ii International students who choose to make the trek to the United States enter a new foreign landscape that includes concerns of safety, and more specifically, fears and concerns of America’s prevalent “gun culture.” Utilizing Dewey’s theory of experiential learning and a Freirean critical approach, I will use a communication studies approach to examine the lived experiences of Indian and Chinese international students at The University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
