GEORGE RAPFS HARMONISTS and the BEGINNINGS of NORWEGIAN MIGRATION to AMERICA Karl J
GEORGE RAPFS HARMONISTS AND THE BEGINNINGS OF NORWEGIAN MIGRATION TO AMERICA Karl J. R. Arndt before George Rapp's Harmonists moved from Harmony in EvenButler County, Pennsylvania, through the great Pittsburgh gateway to establish their second settlement, New Harmony, on the Wabash, they had become internationally famous as highly successful American pioneer builders in the wilderness, but their well-arranged move down the Ohio to the Wabash increased their prestige as models of group migration. With a justified pride in their brilliant transpor- tation of an entire community of 800 people withcattle, sheep, horses, feathered flocks, swine, flora and fauna, building supplies, machinery of various kinds including a steam engine, seeds for future harvests, beer, wine, food supplies, tools, raiment, and medicines over such a distance, Frederick Rapp on March 28, 1816, wrote his Pittsburgh agent George Sutton: "Ican inform you with much pleasure, that we all arrived here in good State of health, and landed our property Safe, which we brought with us from there, so that nothing has happened to none of our Boats of which there was above thirty." Thousands of individuals had passed through Pittsburgh on their way west, but the Harmonist migration was the greatest group achievement of that time and has never been properly recognized in the history of Western Pennsylvania. The Harmonist move was the transportation of an entire civilization from the east to the primeval forests of the west, and for that reason in the west and in Europe the new settlement soon became known as "Harmonie, that Wonder of the West." Frederick Rapp and all the Harmonists were fully aware of what they were accomplishing and therefore took great pride in their unique community, so much so that they wrote enthusiastic letters to friends and relatives in old Wurttemberg inviting them to come and join them in the wide open spaces of the glorious west. -
Women As Role Models in Peace Efforts By
Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Qualities - Women as Role Models in Peace Efforts by Quek Geok Cheng University Women Association of Singapore, 2006 Abstract This paper is based on a selected range of literature review on the role played by women in peace efforts. Specific role models of women peace laureates and general references of other women’s contributions and efforts in peace efforts are discussed to flesh out the innate common qualities of these remarkable women, qualities that predispose them to be natural peace advocates and envoys. Awareness of such qualities serve as passion enablers for every woman to emulate on the road to peace. In short, to quote Professor Francis Sejersted, of the Nobel Peace Prize Committee: “In the good fight for peace and reconciliation, we are dependent on persons who set examples, persons who can symbolize what we are seeking and mobilize the best in us.” “If there is peace in a country or in the world, there are no wars or violent conflicts going on” – that is how a dictionary defines peace. This, essentially, is saying that when there is an absence of war or hostilities, then peace prevails. However, rather than seeing peace from the negative perspective of “not war”, most cultures of Cameroon, Somali and the Burundi equate peace with the positive perspective of ‘freshness’, health, well being, harmony, calm and tranquility.1 Based on this African concept, peace is equated with freshness and harmony which provided farmers with good crops, fishermen with abundant catches and hunters with game. 1 Role of Women in Peace Building and Conflict Resolution in African Traditional Societies: A Selective Review by Miriam Agatha Chinwe Nwoye. -

Modernism and Fascism in Norway by Dean N. Krouk A
Catastrophes of Redemption: Modernism and Fascism in Norway By Dean N. Krouk A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Mark Sandberg, Chair Professor Linda Rugg Professor Karin Sanders Professor Dorothy Hale Spring 2011 Abstract Catastrophes of Redemption: Modernism and Fascism in Norway by Dean N. Krouk Doctor of Philosophy in Scandinavian University of California, Berkeley Professor Mark Sandberg, Chair This study examines selections from the work of three modernist writers who also supported Norwegian fascism and the Nazi occupation of Norway: Knut Hamsun (1859- 1952), winner of the 1920 Nobel Prize; Rolf Jacobsen (1907-1994), Norway’s major modernist poet; and Åsmund Sveen (1910-1963), a fascinating but forgotten expressionist figure. In literary studies, the connection between fascism and modernism is often associated with writers such as Ezra Pound or Filippo Marinetti. I look to a new national context and some less familiar figures to think through this international issue. Employing critical models from both literary and historical scholarship in modernist and fascist studies, I examine the unique and troubling intersection of aesthetics and politics presented by each figure. After establishing a conceptual framework in the first chapter, “Unsettling Modernity,” I devote a separate chapter to each author. Analyzing both literary publications and lesser-known documents, I describe how Hamsun’s early modernist fiction carnivalizes literary realism and bourgeois liberalism; how Sveen’s mystical and queer erotic vitalism overlapped with aspects of fascist discourse; and how Jacobsen imagined fascism as way to overcome modernity’s culture of nihilism. -
NS Og Teaterlivet Under Okkupasjonen
Takk! Norwegians in America
NORWEGIANS IN AMERICA AND PERCEPTIONS OF BELONGING C. 1840–1870 Henrik Olav Mathiesen MASTER’S THESIS History DEPARTMENT OF ARCHAEOLOGY, CONSERVATION AND HISTORY UNIVERSITY OF OSLO Spring 2015 Title: Norwegians in America and Perceptions of Belonging, c. 1840–1870 Thesis submitted for master’ degree in history, Department of Archaeology, Conservation and History, University of Oslo Copyright: Henrik Olav Mathiesen, 2015 Print: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo ii Acknowledgments In letter after letter, emigrants writing home to Norway explained that in America, one “cannot expect any harvest from the land until one year has passed, and not enough until the end of the second year.” Yet one need not even leave Blindern in order to appreciate the meaning of these words. Unlike so many pioneers, immigrants and scholars, I have not made the trip across the Atlantic. The work of Theodore C. Blegen, Orm Øverland, and Steinar Kjærheim and many, many others to gather, transcribe and translate such letters have made it possible for me to rummage some eight hundred America letters, both in Oslo and in London. Moreover, Google Books, Bokhylla.no, Hathi Trust, and the Internet Archive are incredible tools, and so is the National Library of Norway’s website “the Promise of America”: together they give access to most of the main sources for the history of Norwegian migration to America. Offline, the Norwegian- American collection of the National Library is an entire library of itself. But while I appreciate that microfilmed versions of all the major Norwegian American newspapers have been procured by the National Library, I nonetheless blame twenty volumes of poorly photographed antebellum weeklies, all set in black-letter typeface, for my eventual need of having to procure glasses. -
