The ship was remarkable in that it was the first nuclear-powered merchant ship. It was constructed with funding from United States government agencies with the mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace and part of President Eisenhower's larger "Atoms for Peace" project. The sleek and modern design of the ship led to some maritime historians believing it was the prettiest merchant ship ever built. This china embodies both the mission of using nuclear power for peace while incorporating the design inclinations of the ship. -

The Ghost Ship on the Delaware By Steven Ujifusa For PlanPhilly Thousands pass by the Ghost Ship on the Delaware River every day. They speed past it on Columbus Boulevard, I-95, and the Walt Whitman Bridge. They glance at it while shopping at IKEA. For some, it is just another eyesore on Philadelphia’s desolate waterfront, no different from the moldering old cruisers and troop transports moored in the South Philadelphia Navy Yard. The Ghost Ship on the Delaware. www.ssunitedstatesconservancy.org Some may pull over to the side of the road and take a closer look through a barbed wire fence. They then realize that the Ghost Ship is of a different pedigree than an old troop transport. Its two finned funnels, painted in faded red, white and blue, are dramatically raked back. Its superstructure is low and streamlined, lacking the balconies and large picture windows that make today’s cruise ships look like floating condominiums. Its hull is yacht-like, defined by a thrusting prow and gracefully rounded stern. Looking across the river to Camden, one might see that the hull of the Ghost Ship bears more than a passing resemblance to the low-slung, sweeping one of the battleship U.S.S. New Jersey. This ship is imposing without being ponderous, sleek but still dignified. Even though her engines fell silent almost forty years ago, she still appears to be thrusting ahead at forty knots into the gray seas of the North Atlantic. Finally, if one takes the time to look at the bow of the Ghost Ship, it is clear that she has no ordinary name. -

For Immediate Release AlphaUSA Innovation Leads Effort to Restore America’s Flagship National Campaign to Save the SS United States Has Strong Ties to Detroit Livonia, Mich., July 12, 2012 – AlphaUSA is proud to announce their support and involvement in savetheunitedstates.org, the campaign to restore the historic ocean liner SS United States. AlphaUSA’s president, Chuck Dardas, learned of the effort to save the ship from a Philadelphia-based customer with ties to the SS United States Conservancy, the nonprofit which took ownership of the ship in 2011 when a Philadelphia philanthropist provided funding to rescue the ship from being sold for scrap. With a long history in Detroit industry, AlphaUSA developed an affinity for the ship and its representation of technical innovation and excellence in engineering and manufacturing. The famed naval architect William Francis Gibbs designed the superliner. Constructed entirely in the United States she served a dual-purpose. In peaceful times she would be the world’s finest passenger liner, but if called upon, she could be converted to a troop carrier in two-days time, transporting 10,000 troops anywhere in the world. The ship that bears the name of the nation became a cause of the veteran-owned AlphaUSA. Inspired by Detroit’s growing can-do spirit and its innovative grassroots leaders, AlphaUSA proposed a unique online crowdfunding approach allowing donors to sponsor and save particular pieces of the SS United States’ exterior through an interactive web site that allows visitors to explore the ship, and learn about her history while participating in her restoration. -

In a first process of globalization transport links are developing at great speed. For the first time, railways are enabling even ordinary citizens to move their place of residen- ce, while the first steamships are being tested in overseas trades. A great wave of emigration to the United States is just starting. “Speak up! Why are you moving away?” asks the poet Ferdinand Freiligrath in the ballad “The emigrants” that became something of a hymn for a German national mo- vement. The answer is simple: Because they can no longer stand life at home. Until 1918, stress and political repression cause millions of Europeans, among them many Germans, especially, to make off for the New World to look for new opportunities, a new life. Germany is splintered into backward princedoms under absolute rule. Mass poverty prevails and the lower orders are emigrating in swarms. That suits the rulers only too well, since a ticket to America produces a solution to all social problems. Any troublemaker can be sent across the big pond. The residents of entire almshouses are collectively despatched on voyage. New York is soon complaining about hordes of German beggars. The dangers of emigration are just as unlimited as the hoped-for opportunities in the USA. Most of the emigrants are literally without any experience, have never left their place of birth, and before the paradise they dream of, comes a hell. -

UNITED STATES LINES went out of its way to keep passengers happy. A good example involved a new mercedes benz being loaded in bremerhaven. -

United States Conservancy (www.ssunitedstatesconservancy.org), a national non-profit organization working to preserve America’s flagship, has learned that the S.S. UNITED STATES will be sold by the ship’s current owner, Star Cruises. Star Cruises has provided no assurances that the historic vessel will not be sold for scrap. Norwegian Cruise Line, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Star Cruises, purchased the S.S. UNITED STATES in April, 2003 with the intent of returning her to service as part of NCL America, the Line’s U.S.-flagged fleet. NCL has maintained the ship on the Philadelphia waterfront since 2003. NCL’s U.S.-flagged brand has weathered recent financial setbacks, and its fleet has been reduced to a single vessel, the PRIDE OF AMERICA. The S.S. UNITED STATES shattered all transatlantic speed records on her maiden voyage in 1952 and to this day is, by a wide margin, the fastest passenger vessel ever built. The ship was listed on the National Register of Historic Places before the normal 50 year old requirement because of her “compelling national significance”. During her service career, she hosted heads of state, captains of industry, and "A list" celebrities. Her passenger lists included Presidents Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Greta Garbo, Katherine Hepburn, John Wayne, Cary Grant, Errol Flynn, Marlon Brando, Leonard Bernstein and even Leonardo da Vinci’s masterpiece Mona Lisa, traveling first class in a specially designed container on her way home after an exhibition in the United States. -

Biography - Information Richard Bransonis a flamboyant British entrepreneur with a seemingly insatiable appetite for starting new businesses. His internationally recognized brand "Virgin"is splashed across everything from credit cards, to airlines and music "megastores". Branson is continuously seeking new business opportunities and loves a good challenge, especially when he enters a market that is dominated by a few major players. Richard Branson was born on July 18, 1950. His entrepreneurial ways began early when he was publishing a student magazine at just 16 years. Branson did not go on to graduate school but in 1970 the now famous Virgin brand had its beginnings in the form of a discount records mail order venture that he and his friend Nik Powell worked on. Virgin Records Soon after opening a record store on Oxford Street, London, Branson began a recording label in 1972, Virgin Records. This was to be the first major success for the British entrepreneur as he started the label with a hit record. The instrumental artist Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells"released in 1973 was a cash cow for Branson's Virgin Records and it stayed in the UK music charts for 247 weeks. The record label went on to sign top music artists like "Genesis", "The Sex Pistols", "The Rolling Stones"and "Simple Minds". The Virgin Records Group was sold in 1992 to THORN EMI for $1 billion USD. Richard Branson obviously wasn't finished with the music recording business as he went on to start V2 Records in 1996. The V2 Music brand has a stable of artists that include "Stereophonics", "Powder Finger", "Mercury Rev"and "Tom Jones".
