I had not really read Lamantia before, but I picked this up the other day in City Lights and could not stop reading. His early poems are astounding and refreshingly surrealist. I have nearly completed the text and I can honestly say it's been a thrilling ride to go on the wild, spiritual, alchemical, chronological journey of Philip Lamantia's poetry.The introduction is brilliant, one of the better intros of poets that I have read. It's over fifty pages, and it provides critical biographical information and insight into Lamantia's poetry and his life. It reads as a companion to the poetry itself. The writing of the introduction is very strong.I also want to comment on the length of the text. It's under 500 pages, but wow, many publishing houses would have made this 800! How? First, the introduction is all in roman numerals. Second, the editors do not feel the need to start a new poem on every page. They start the next poem after the previous poem ends with just the right amount of spacing. The poems do not feel jumbled together at all. What you end up with is a lot more poetry per page.I also love the overall layout. It's very clean, the dust jacket is great, and the break-down of poems by books and publication in this volume is clearly explained in the intro. The only thing I was not clear on is what is left out of this substantial volume. From a quick survey of the table of contents, which reads "From..., From...., From...," the reader can get the wrong impression that it's a middling sampling. It's impressively generous, and I could not have been more satisfied.
The Collected Poems of Philip Lamantia represents the lifework of the most visionary poet of the American postwar generation. Philip Lamantia (1927-2005) played a major role in shaping the poetics of both the Beat and the Surrealist movements in the United States. First mentored by the San Francisco poet Kenneth Rexroth, the teenage Lamantia also came to the attention of the French Surrealist leader André Breton, who, after reading Lamantia’s youthful work, hailed him as a “voice that rises once in a hundred years.” Later, Lamantia went “on the road” with Jack Kerouac and shared the stage with Allen Ginsberg at the famous Six Gallery reading in San Francisco, where Ginsburg first read “Howl.” Throughout his life, Lamantia sought to extend and renew the visionary tradition of Romanticism in a distinctly American vernacular, drawing on mystical lore and drug experience in the process. The Collected Poems gathers not only his published work but also an extensive selection of unpublished or uncollected work; the editors have also provided a biographical introduction.
