CINEMA 6! 137 ARTAUD VERSUS KANT: ANNIHILATION OF THE IMAGINATION IN DELEUZE’S PHILOSOPHY OF CINEMA1 Jurate Baranova (Lithuanian University of Educational Sciences) Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) and Antonin Artaud (1896-1948) present two different poles of the possibility of thought: 1) that of critical sharpness and 2) a possible inability to concen- trate on thinking at all. The first author is known as a famous critic of all forms of reason, whereas the second stands out as the author of the theatre of cruelty, a poet, playwright, es- sayist, novelist, theatre and film actor, producer, theoretician of the theatre, and artist who spent about nine years in various asylums, diagnosed with schizophrenical delirium. How it is possible for them to have some relation at all? Philosophy is a paradox, writes Deleuze in Difference and Repetition. These two, at the first sight incommensurable thinkers, as Michel Foucault would have said — meet at the realm of discourse — in the philosophy of Deleuze. In 1963, Deleuze published the book Kant’s Critical Philosophy (La philosophie critique de Kant). He never wrote a book or any special text on Artaud as, for instance, Jacques Derrida did in “La Parole soufflée,” “Le Théâtre de la cruauté et la clôture de la représentation,”2 and “For- cener le subjectile.”3 Adrian Morfee nevertheless made a hasty conclusion when he re- proached Deleuze for “grandiloquent championing of Artaud in his article “Le Schizophrène et le mot,” where he declares he would not sacrifice one page of Artaud for all of Carroll, in fact only half a page out of fifteen are given over to discussing Artaud. -

Im Rausch der Revolution: Kunst und Politik bei André Masson und den surrealistischen Gruppierungen Contre-Attaque und Acéphale STEPHAN MOEBIUS Wirft man einen Blick auf die Debatten um die historische Avantgarde- bewegung des Surrealismus, so fällt auf, dass deren politisches Engage- ment1 in der Avantgardeforschung, in Ausstellungen und in der Kunst- geschichte allgemein auf spezifische und mehrere Weisen »gezähmt«2 wird: Entweder werden die politischen Aktivitäten der Surrealisten auf eine antibürgerliche Haltung reduziert oder sie werden als eine kurzzei- tige, von der »wahren« ästhetischen Praxis und den Kunstwerken der Surrealisten völlig abtrennbare Verirrung3 dargestellt. In manchen Inter- pretationen wirft man ihnen sogar vor, mit totalitären Systemen ver- wandt zu sein oder diese vorbereitet zu haben (Dröge/Müller 1995; Klinger 2004: 218). Joseph Jarman’s Black Case Volume I & II: Return From Exile February 13, 2020 By Cam Scott When composer, priest, poet, and instrumentalist Joseph Jarman passed away in January 2019, a bell sounded in the hearts of thousands of listeners. As an early member of the Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM), as well as its flagship group, the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Jarman was a key figure in the articulation of Great Black Music as a multi- generational ethic rather than a standard repertoire. As an ordained Buddhist priest, Jarman’s solicitude transcended philosophical affinity and deepened throughout his life as his music evolved. His musical, poetic, and religious paths appear to have been mutually informative, in spite of a hiatus from public performance in the nineties—and to encounter Jarman’s own words is to understand as much. The full breadth of this complexity is celebrated in the long-awaited reissue of Black Case Volume I & II: Return from Exile, a blend of smut and sutra, poetry and polemic, that feels like a reaffirmation of Jarman’s ambitious vision in the present day. Black Case wears its context proudly. A near-facsimile of the original 1977 publication by the Art Ensemble of Chicago (which itself was built upon a coil-bound printing from 1974), the volume serves as a time capsule of a key period in the development of an emancipatory musical and cultural program, and an intimate portrait of the artist-as-revolutionary. Black Case, then, feels most contemporary where it is most of its time, as a document of Black militancy and programmatic self-determination in which—to paraphrase Larry Neal’s 1968 summary of the Black Arts Movement—ethics and aesthetics, individual and community, are tightly unified. -

thresholds 41 Spring 2013, 32-45 OCCUPY THE FUN PALACE BRITT EVERSOLE During the 1968 holiday season, a dozen people and one Santa Claus impersonator stormed Selfridges, a Daniel Burnham-designed department store on London’s posh Oxford Street. Confused customers gathered when Father Christmas and his helpers pulled goods from the shelves and began giving them away. When clerks intervened, a melee erupted, arrests ensued, and police were forced to make crying children return unpurchased toys and candy. In the aftermath, Londoners found leaflets bearing an anti-consumer diatribe against the holidays as the palliative to another year of pointless labor ending in unaffordable shopping and perfunctory celebration (Figure 1). Chiding Britons that they did not deserve Christmas because they had not worked hard enough, this year’s festivities were a “punishment…a duty to be cheerful, to play the fool, let down your hair as soon as they switch on the lights and raise the curtain.” A call to arms ended the invective: Let’s smash the whole great deception. Occupy the Fun Palace and really set the swings going. Grab the gifts and really give them. Light up Oxford Street and dance around the fire.1 This vicious potlatch was one of many guerilla actions by the English Situation- ist-inspired group King Mob, named after the 1780 Gordon Riots in which revolt- ing prison inmates freed themselves by the authority of “His Majesty, King Mob.” During the late 1960s, they assaulted British culture with pranks, profane leafleting and poster campaigns, and by vandalizing buildings and infrastructure with erudite phrases, the most famous being a thesis on an Underground embankment: SAME THING DAY AFTER DAY–TUBE–WORK–DINER [sic]–WORK–TUBE–ARMCHAIR–T.V.– SLEEP–TUBE–WORK–HOW MUCH MORE CAN YOU TAKE–ONE IN TEN GO MAD– ONE IN FIVE CRACKS UP. -

Yes, I am immersed in our Russian work, in one of the most [ B ] difficult tasks that will ever exist. I know that we won’t be able to build a lot of flawless buildings here, that we won’t be able to produce wonderful material compositions, that we won’t even be able to implement pure floor plans and apartment types, maybe not even flawless city plans. [...] we are not working here with the intention of influencing how art develops and making new mate- rial available to art history, but rather because we are witnessing societal projects of modernism a great cultural-historical development that is almost unprecedent- reshaping the world ed in its scope and extent [...].»1 Stam describes his activities in Russia ex negativo, knowing full well that in doing so he is violating the well-established rela- tionship between himself and Giedion and all the rules of the game in the industry.
