    - 119 - Appell, G. N. 1986 Kayan Land Tenure and the Distribution of Devolvable Usufruct in Borneo. Borneo Research Bulletin 18:119-30. KAYAN LAND TENURE AND THE DISTRIBUTION OF DEVOLVABLE USUFRUCT IN BORNEO G. N. Appell Brandeis University INTRODUCTION The literature on land tenure among the indigenous peoples of Borneo perpetuates an error with regard to the Kayan system of land tenure. It is stated that among the Kayan no devolvable usufructary rights are created by the clearing of primary forest (e.g. Rousseau 1977:136) and that the Kayan land tenure system is, therefore, like that of the Rungus of Sabah. However, according to my field inquiries the Kayan and Rungus have radically different systems of land tenure. In correcting this misapprehension it will be necessary to review the status of research on land tenure in Borneo and pose critical questions for further research.1 THE TYPES OF LAND TENURE SYSTEMS IN THE SWIDDEN SOCIETIES OF BORNEO There are two basic types of land tenure systems found in those societies practicing swidden agriculture (see Appell 1971a). First, there is what I term "the circulating usufruct system"; and second, there is what I call "the devolvable usufruct system" (See Appell 1971b).2 In the system of circulating usufruct, once a swidden area has reverted to forest, any member of the village may cut the forest again to make a swidden without seeking permission of the previous cultivator. In other words, no devolvable or permanent use rights are established by cutting primary forest. Examples of this type of system may be found among the Rungus (See Appell 1971b, 1976) and the Bulusu' (see Appell 1983a, n.d.).

  • Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics &A
Online Appendix for Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue (2014) Some Principles of the Use of Macro-Areas Language Dynamics & Change Harald Hammarstr¨om& Mark Donohue The following document lists the languages of the world and their as- signment to the macro-areas described in the main body of the paper as well as the WALS macro-area for languages featured in the WALS 2005 edi- tion. 7160 languages are included, which represent all languages for which we had coordinates available1. Every language is given with its ISO-639-3 code (if it has one) for proper identification. The mapping between WALS languages and ISO-codes was done by using the mapping downloadable from the 2011 online WALS edition2 (because a number of errors in the mapping were corrected for the 2011 edition). 38 WALS languages are not given an ISO-code in the 2011 mapping, 36 of these have been assigned their appropri- ate iso-code based on the sources the WALS lists for the respective language. This was not possible for Tasmanian (WALS-code: tsm) because the WALS mixes data from very different Tasmanian languages and for Kualan (WALS- code: kua) because no source is given. 17 WALS-languages were assigned ISO-codes which have subsequently been retired { these have been assigned their appropriate updated ISO-code. In many cases, a WALS-language is mapped to several ISO-codes. As this has no bearing for the assignment to macro-areas, multiple mappings have been retained. 1There are another couple of hundred languages which are attested but for which our database currently lacks coordinates.

DigitalResources Electronic Survey Report 2014-005 ® The Signed Languages of Indonesia: An Enigma Hope M. Hurlbut The Signed Languages of Indonesia: An Enigma Hope M. Hurlbut SIL International® 2014 SIL Electronic Survey Report 2014-005, April 2014 © 2014 SIL International® All rights reserved 1 2 Abstract In 2003–2005, SIL International undertook a lexicostatistical survey of the signed languages of Indonesia. Wordlists and stories were collected from each of the nineteen states where one or more schools for the Deaf were run privately or by the government. The wordlists were video recorded and transcribed by hand using the SignWriting orthography. The results of the wordlist comparisons point out the need for intelligibility testing between users of the various varieties of Indonesian Sign Language. Intelligibility testing should be carried out sometime in at least eleven of the nineteen states where the similarity between the signs in the list is low. This paper focuses on the results of the lexicostatistical survey. There are at least two signed languages in use in Indonesia, Indonesian Sign Language and Bengkala Sign Language. Bengkala Sign Language is an isolect found in northern Bali in the village of Bengkala where there is a high proportion of Deaf among the inhabitants. It has been called Bali Sign Language in the past, but since it seems to be more or less confined to the village of Bengkala, it seems better to call it Bengkala Sign Language. The rest of the Deaf on the island use a form of Indonesian Sign Language. At the time of the survey there were two Deaf youth from Bengkala going to school in the Deaf school (or a Deaf class) in Singaraja which is about 17 kilometers from Bengkala Village.

  • The Deaf of Mozambique
Profile Year: 2015 People and Language Detail Report Language Name: Mozambican Sign Language ISO Language Code: mzy The Deaf of Mozambique The Mozambican Sign Language Community Among the poorest of the poor in Mozambique, the Mozambican Deaf typically are unemployed or under-employed. This forces them to remain with their (hearing) family to have regular income, moving to a city to try to find employment or joining a local Deaf gang. Local churches have tried to reach out to meet the needs of the Deaf, but the need is quite large. Most Deaf live for “today.” Many fall into sexual immorality as well as drugs, alcohol, gangs, and stealing to survive. As a Deaf population within a hearing one, the Mozambican Deaf struggle from the same things that most Deaf globally do: ● Most are born to hearing parents, but do not usually learn language or values from them. They often lack anything more than basic communication skills with family members. ● Their difficulty is not the inability to hear, but the great barrier to communicating with the surrounding dominant culture, especially acquiring photo by DOOR International information. ● In Mozambique, many hearing families still consider the birth of a deaf child to be a curse for some previous sin or wrong. Primary Religion: Mozambique formally recognized Mozambican Sign Language as an Non-religious __________________________________________________ indigenous language in 2005. But it has only three schools for the deaf, with Disciples (Matt 28:19): limited use of Mozambican Sign Language (oral methods are employed: to Less than 2% read lips, speak and read __________________________________________________ Portuguese).
