Since 2003 four new wrecks dating from the second to the third century AD were discovered along the limes in the Netherlands. These wrecks have been studied and published in Dutch. As some remarkable information came to light about the provenance of wood (De Meern 1 and 4, Woerden 7), crew composition and live-on-board (De Meern 1), the sequence of construction and the use of the Mediterranean mortice-and-tenon technique to connect the strakes (De Meern 4), a complete new ship type, a punt (De Meern 6), details about propulsion (Woerden 7), new research was started on the barges Zwammerdam 2 and 6 and the barge Woerden 7. This article gives an overview of these new finds and this new research project for a broader audience in English. Depuis 2003, quatre nouvelles épaves, datées du IIe au IIIe s. ap. J.-C., ont été retrouvées le long du limes aux Pays-Bas. Ces épaves ont été étudiées et publiées en néerlandais. Elles ont fourni des informations très intéressantes concernant la provenance du bois (De Meern 1 et 4, Woerden 7), la composition de l’équipage et la vie à bord (De Meern 1), la séquence de construction et l’usage de la technique méditerranéenne par tenon-et-mortaise pour l’assemblage des virures (De Meern 4), un punt, type de navire totalement nouveau (De Meern 6) et des détails sur la propulsion (Woerden 7). Pour ces raisons, de nouvelles recherches ont été entreprises sur les barges Zwammerdam 2 et 6 et Woerden 7. Cet article donne une vue d’ensemble de ces nouvelles découvertes et de ce nouveau projet de recherche afin d’en assurer une meilleure diffusion. Specifiek draagt deze snelfietsroute bij aan het stimuleren van het fietsgebruik in het woon-werkverkeer, de bereikbaarheid van de regio en aan een gezonde leefomgeving. Daarmee hebben we uitgesproken deze route gezamenlijk te willen aanleggen en op basis daarvan is de afgelopen periode in gezamenlijkheid gewerkt aan een ontwerp, risicoanalyse, planning en kostenraming voor deze route, om uitvoeringsafspraken te kunnen maken. We gaan nu een samenwerkingsovereenkomst (SOK) met de provincie en de gemeente Utrecht aan over de realisatie, beheer, onderhoud en instandhouding van de snelfietsroute. Met de SOK borgen de provincie en de gemeenten dat de snelfietsroute als een samenhangend geheel met dezelfde kwaliteitsniveau gerealiseerd wordt Kernboodschap: Het tracé van de snelfietsroute tussen Woerden en Utrecht is circa 19 kilometer lang. Als uitgangspunt voor de kwaliteit is gebruik gemaakt van het CROW “Inspiratieboek Snelle Fietsroutes”.

    Living with Rivers Netherland Plain Polder Farmers' Migration to and through the River Flatlands of the states of New York and New Jersey Part I 1 Foreword Esopus, Kinderhook, Mahwah, the summer of 2013 showed my wife and me US farms linked to 1700s. The key? The founding dates of the Dutch Reformed Churches. We followed the trail of the descendants of the farmers from the Netherlands plain. An exci- ting entrance into a world of historic heritage with a distinct Dutch flavor followed, not mentioned in the tourist brochures. Could I replicate this experience in the Netherlands by setting out an itinerary along the family names mentioned in the early documents in New Netherlands? This particular key opened a door to the iconic world of rectangular plots cultivated a thousand year ago. The trail led to the first stone farms laid out in ribbons along canals and dikes, as they started to be built around the turn of the 15th to the 16th century. The old villages mostly on higher grounds, on cross roads, the oldest churches. As a sideline in a bit of fieldwork around the émigré villages, family names literally fell into place like Koeymans and van de Water in Schoonrewoerd or Cool in Vianen, or ten Eyck in Huinen. Some place names also fell into place, like Bern or Kortgericht, not Swiss, not Belgian, but Dutch situated in the Netherlands plain. The plain part of a centuries old network, as landscaped in the historic bishopric of Utrecht, where Gelder Valley polder villages like Huinen, Hell, Voorthuizen and Wekerom were part of.
