Adapun cita-cita menulis buku ini, telah lama kami canangkan, sekitar tahun 2005 yang lalu. Namun karena sulitnya mengumpulkan materi-materi yang akan diajangkau, yakni begitu ekstensif dan luasnya bahan yang mesti dicapai, juga materi yang dikaji di bidang kesenian meliputi seni-seni: musik, tari, teater baik yang tradisional. Sementara latar belakang keilmuan kami pun, baik di strata satu dan dua, umumnya adalah terkonsentasi di bidang etnomusikologi dan kajian seni pertunjukan yang juga dengan minat utama musik etnik. Hanya seorang saja yang berlatar belakang akademik antropologi tari. Selain itu, tim kami ini ada dua orang yang berlatar belakang pendidikan strata dua antropologi dan sosiologi. Oleh karenanya latar belakang keilmuan ini, sangat mewarnai apa yang kami tulis dalam buku ini. Adapun materi dalam buku ini memuat tentang konsep apa itu masyarakat, kesenian, dan Indonesia—serta terminologi-terminologi yang berkaitan dengannya seperti: kebudayaan, pranata sosial, dan kelompok sosial. -

Kinzer Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Dr. Christina Sunardi Music In this dissertation, I show how Malay-identified performing arts are used to fold in Malay Muslim identity into the urban milieu, not as an alternative to Kuala Lumpur’s contemporary cultural trajectory, but as an integrated part of it. I found this identity negotiation occurring through secular performance traditions of a particular instrument known as the gambus (lute), an Arabic instrument with strong ties to Malay history and trade. During my fieldwork, I discovered that the gambus in Malaysia is a potent symbol through which Malay Muslim identity is negotiated based on various local and transnational conceptions of Islamic modernity. My dissertation explores the material and virtual pathways that converge a number of historical, geographic, and socio-political sites—including the National Museum and the National Conservatory for the Arts, iv Culture, and Heritage—in my experiences studying the gambus and the wider transmission of muzik Melayu (Malay music) in urban Malaysia. I argue that the gambus complicates articulations of Malay identity through multiple agentic forces, including people (musicians, teachers, etc.), the gambus itself (its materials and iconicity), various governmental and non-governmental institutions, and wider oral, aural, and material transmission processes. -

The method can be divided into three distinct parts consisting of spectrogram construction that retains the most salient feature of the music, template construction that takes into account the variations in music within a genre as well as the music progresses, and template matching based on spectrogram image cross-correlation with unconstrained minimum average correlation energy filters. Experiments conducted with seven genres of traditional Malay music show that the recognition accuracy is dependent on the number of segments used to construct the filter templates, which in turn is related to the length of music segment used. Despite using a small dataset, an average recognition rate of 61.8 percent was obtained for music segments lasting 180 seconds using six relatively short excerpts. ARTICLE Musical Practice of Malay ‘traditional’ forms Malay Community Much has been written about the little that is known about pre 19 th century Singapore, among the recent works being the Singapore History Museum's Early Singapore 1300s - 1819: Evidence in Maps, text and Artefacts . However, references to music can be found in the classical Malay text Sejarah Melayu (Malay Annals) that traces the origins and descent of Malay royalty. Although the Sejarah Melayu is a work belonging to more traditional literary genre than history, it nevertheless provides some clue to what type of music could have been performed and heard in prior to the arrival of the British. Here, mention is made of the queen of Bintan, Iskandar Shah who is said to have been the first to use or instituted the nobat , which refers to both a drum as well as a royal orchestra that performs during a ruler's coronation, Bagindalah yang pertama nobat, maka diturut oleh segala raja-raja yang di bawah angin ini. 1 The significance of the nobat lies in that it is believed that the ruler will not be accepted unless the nobat is played. More interestingly however, according to the Sejarah Melayu , Iskandar Shah was the mother of Sang Nila Utama, the founder of Singapore. 2 Excavations by historian and archaeologist John Miksic however has not revealed any musical instruments although Miksic does mention the limitation of his work owing to extraneous factors. Miksic also points out objects that have yet to be identified. Nevertheless, he does however suggest that Fort Canning was once the site of religious activity, craftsmen's workshops and a palace. -

Schuyler Music This dissertation is intended as an ethnomusicological contribution to the history of music and media in Indonesia. It deals with topics and resources that have never been systematically examined for this region: gramophone records and radio broadcasting from the years before World War II, the last years of Dutch colonial control. The gramophone records are our only documentation of the sound of Indonesian music in the years before World War II. This dissertation tries to identify (and to some extent provide) the information one needs in order to understand the records and, by extension, stylistic trends during the pre-war period. Ultimately it is meant as an argument for the importance of making use of historical recordings and discography in ethnomusicology. The Baba Nyonya or Peranakan are long- standing culturally syncretic minority group, resulting from the marriage of southern- China Hokkien migrants and local women in the Straits Settlements. The result of the union is an eclectic material culture, custom and practices evident in Chinese, Malay, Dutch, British and Portuguese influences. As a case study, the focus of this research is the Persatuan Peranakan Cina Melaka (PPCM, Peranakan Chinese Association of Melaka). The association played an important role to safeguard the political standing of the Peranakan in the pre-WWII days. However, in the present, located in what was once considered Peranakan core area of Heeren Street, the association acts as a focal point for the congregation of Peranakan community in Melaka where cultural expression take place in the form of musical activities and performances and this is done through the three groups: BaNya choir group, The Melodians band, and Bunga Rampay dance group. The three groups share the same song repertoire, which is a collection of songs cultivated through family genealogies that evokes nostalgia and collective memory. -

Ethnoregional Social Dramas of Southeast Asian in Globalism: Recasting Cultural Heritage for Ethnic Revivals Summary This book offers an interpretative symbolic analysis of present global phenomenon that gives rise ethnic culture as regional identity. With a multi-sited ethnography (Marcus, 1995 and 1998), this book is a sort of comparative ethnographies which sought the collective identities of the Melayu Baru or Neo-Malay and Chinese Peranakan or Nanyang in two cities of Southeast Asia. The Neo- Malay with Islam solidarity (Ummah) is attached to ethnoregional community, in contrast, the Chinese Nanyang or Peranakan got their identity remaking with syncretic popular beliefs in the Straits of Melaka. Ethnicity data of Neo-Malay and Chinese Nanyang of Georgetown of Malaysia and Medan City of Indonesia are divided into four Social Drama phases (Turner, 1982), they are: Breach, Liminal, Redress, and Reintegration. Ethnography of ethnic formations and revivals comprises of: (1) Colonialism as Breach: Ethnic Categories of the Dutch Indies and British Malay (2) Nationalism as Liminal: Ethno-national symbolic disputes (3) Ethnoregionalism as Redress: regionalizing the cultural hybridity of Neo-Malay and of Chinese Nanyang, and (4) Globalism as Reintegration: galvanizing heritage fiestas for global culture. The reproduced hybrid heritage of Neo-Malay and Chinese Nanyang is annually performed in public spaces and social media by the ethnic groups in Georgetown-Malaysia and Medan North Sumatra.
