Editors' Note As this issue of Indonesia goes to press, the People's Consultative Assembly has taken the decisive step of effectively ratifying the results of the August 30 referendum by which the people of East Timor overwhelmingly declared their choice for national independence. The editors believe this occasion is of sufficient importance to congratulate the Consultative Assembly on the wisdom of its decision, and at the same time to congratulate the people of East Timor on the successful culmination of a long and painful struggle for freedom and self-determination. Hidup Timor Loro Sae! The Traditional Javanese Performing Arts in the Twilight of the New O rder: Two Letters From Solo Marc Perlman By coincidence I spent the summers of 1997 and 1998 in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia. Along with Yogyakarta, its rival sixty kilometers or so to the west, Solo is the center of high Javanese culture, and heir to the traditions of a colonial-era royal court. I had lived therefor three years in the mid-1980s, where I studied karawitan (traditional gamelan music). Aside from a two-month visit in 1994, however, I had not seen the place for seven years. I returned to Indonesia in 1997 to participate in an international gamelan festival; in 1998 I came to purchase a set cf gamelan instruments for my university. Needless to say, I did not know that Soeharto's thirty-two-year rule would end in May 1998, much less did I plan to take before-and-after snapshots of the Solonese artistic scene. Nevertheless, the reader may find these two personal accounts cf some interest.

From their lyrics of the Slank song titled Seperti Para Koruptor, the Slank gives a clear message to persuade the audiences to live with humble and just be ourselves because in the living world, happiness and peaceful is much more worthed instead of being rich and famous. • BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1. Latar Belakang Masalah Bahasa Bukan Hanya Sekedar Deretan Kata Yang Tersusun Sedemikian Rupa Yang Diucapkan
1 BAB I PENDAHULUAN 1.

Today, orangutan conservation has become something that Indonesians do out in the forests. In service of these efforts, musicians and shamans have joined Sound For Orangutan, an annual music event held in Jakarta since 2012 with additional festivals in other locations in subsequent years. Within this frame of reference, I will argue that both music and shamanism exceed semantics that merely describes differences in things. On stage: musicians incorporate different primate “calls” in a single song that points to a location in which the orangutan and non-orangutan coinhabit.

  • Music for the Pria Dewasa: Changes and Continuities in Class and Pop Music Genres
Journal of Indonesian Social Sciences and Humanities Vol. 3, 2010, pp. 99-130 URL: http://jissh.journal.lipi.go.id/index.php/jissh/article/view/48 DOI: 10.14203/jissh.v3i1.48 Copyright: content is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 License ISSN: 1979-8431 (printed), 2656-7512 (Online) Music for the Pria Dewasa: Changes and Continuities in Class and Pop Music Genres Emma Baulch Australian National University Abstract This paper presents Rolling Stone Indonesia1 (RSI) and places it in an historical context to tease out some changes and continuities in Indonesian middle-class politics since the beginning of the New Order. Some political scientists have claimed that class interests were at the core of the transition from Guided Democracy to the New Order, and popular music scholars generally assert that class underlies pop genre distinctions. But few have paid attention to how class and genre were written into Indonesian pop in the New Order period; Indonesian pop has a fascinating political history that has so far been overlooked. Placing RSI in historical perspective can reveal much about the print media’s classing of pop under New Order era political constraints, and about the ways these modes of classing may or may not have endured in the post-authoritarian, globalised and liberalised media environment.2 The article introduces the Indonesian-licensed edition of Rolling Stone magazine. The title of the Indonesian edition is, like that of the principal publication, simply Rolling Stone. However, for clarity’s sake, this paper refers to Rolling Stone Indonesia, abbreviated to RSI. 2 This paper is part of a three-year research project titled “Middle Classes, New Media and Indie Networks in Post Authoritarian Indonesia”, begun in March 2009, funded by the Australian Research Council.

STARSTUFF ADAPTING NEVERLAND Peter and the Starcatcher is an example of an adaptation. Rick Elice wrote the play based on the novels by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. But when a playwright adapts something for the theatre, he’s doing much more than transcribing the dialogue from the source material; he’s reinventing the story for the stage. By experiencing the process of the playwright, students will encounter the play with a new perspective. Line of Inquiry: What is the process of the playwright as he adapts literature for the stage? Pellentesque semper semper gravida. Suspendisse a dolor metus, ac sagittis turpis. Nam imperdiet condimentum hendrerit. Goal: To expose students to the process of adaptation by providing them with firsthand experience in reinventing literature for the stage. Objectives: Students will: • Adapt literature by writing original stage scenes. • Use problem-solving skills to creatively solve common challenges associated with adaptation. • Provide and receive critical feedback on creative content. Warm Up: Dramatic Discussion Use these prompts to engage your students in a conversation about adaptation: • Are you aware of any books that have been made into movies? Movies that have become stage musicals? What about books that have become plays? • From the examples you shared, talk about some of the differences between the original version and the adaptation. • Why do you think the adapters
