Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized. -

The Data of research are taken from six songs, there are "One of the boys", "Pearl", "Part of me", "Dark Horse", "Roar" and "International Smile". This study used a qualitative descriptive method to collect data and required information. The results of this research indicated that: (1) There are 14 data containing liberal feminist ideology which is based on the value of personal autonomy of freedom. The basic values of freedom seen of personal autonomy that mostly found are being free of the limits set by patriarchal paternalistic (6 data). (2) The lyrics of Katy Perry songs have a criticism of women who should be free from all form of threats of violence, have a facilities in various field and should not always subservient to the men and social law. (3) Katy Perry wants to tell the women, they have power, the form of power is in physical and psychological strength. Keywords: Liberal feminism, Songs, lyric I. But what happens when we turn a critical eye toward the messages cloaked within this supposedly feminist missive? A close examination of popular music associated with girl empowerment reveals that many of the messages found within these lyrics are frighteningly just as damaging as the misogynistic, violent, and explicitly sexual ones found in the usual fare of top 100 Hits. -

Abstract In 1997 HBO aired its first original drama series, Oz. In the years that have followed the network has positioned itself as vanguard in the television landscape, however, HBO drama series have remained a complicated, and often dangerous site for female characters. Moreover, with a few exceptions (Sex and the City, or True Blood for example), original HBO drama series remain focused on the network’s primary audience demographic: the predominantly male, relatively affluent consumers of quality television. This research explores the representation of female detectives within original HBO crime drama series, The Wire (2002--8) and Season Two of True Detective (2014 -), in order to examine how female officers, operate within the male-dominated world of HBO drama. -

Mark Liberman (T.A. ) Ling001 December 2015 From Hudson to Perry: A Linguistic Analysis of Katy Perry’s Transformation from Gospel Girl to Pop Powerhouse I. Introduction The first time I ever heard the pop sensation Katy Hudson, more popularly known by her stage name, Katy Perry, was in 2008 on a road trip with my family. The soon-to-be hit song, “I kissed a Girl” came on the radio, and with the simple lyrics “I kissed a girl and I liked it,” a small firestorm erupted within our Honda CR-V. However, after listening to many of her earlier songs and more recent songs as they came out, I noticed that Perry’s linguistic style changed significantly from her first Christian Rock album, Katy Hudson, released in 2001, to her first major popular music album, One of the Boys, released in 2008, to her most recent popular music album, Prism, released in 2013. From a linguistic perspective, I noticed semantic, pragmatic, and phonological changes. This essay will evaluate this through the lens of several factors such as a simplification of verse structure, and a decrease in formality over time. I will evaluate word frequency, word associations, pronunciation variations, verse length, and metric structure. I propose that, for the sake of increasing her popularity, Perry simplified her language to appeal to a broader audience through phonological, pragmatic and semantic means. Because I wanted to focus on several levels of linguistic analysis, I decided that I would need to take a two-pronged approach to evaluating Katy Perry’s linguistic change. -
