Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

Thesis: English Literature Department, Faculty of Adab and Humanities, Universitas Islam Negeri Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, 2019. This research is aimed at taking comprehensive understanding regarding the type of figurative language within the song lyrics in Katy Perry’s Witness (2017) album to know what her perspectives about her country (USA) especially after the 2016 election. After understanding the type of figurative language, it is then related and connected to the idea of the author. The utilized theories in this research are stylistics by Geoffrey Leech and Mick Short and figurative language by Laurence Perrine. This study uses qualitative method and content analysis approach since the object of the analysis is formed as song lyrics. Adopting the Perrine’s theory of figurative language, it is discovered that there are only seven of twelve types of figurative language i.e. simile, metaphor, personification, metonymy, symbol, hyperbole, and irony. Metaphor mostly dominates in the song lyrics with its total eight times (29,63%) of occurrence. After finding the type of figurative language, the researcher relates the meaning of figurative language to the context in the data. Hence, it is discovered that the author’s political perspective and women empowerment in metaphor which dominates the type of figurative language.

The Data of research are taken from six songs, there are "One of the boys", "Pearl", "Part of me", "Dark Horse", "Roar" and "International Smile". This study used a qualitative descriptive method to collect data and required information. The results of this research indicated that: (1) There are 14 data containing liberal feminist ideology which is based on the value of personal autonomy of freedom. The basic values of freedom seen of personal autonomy that mostly found are being free of the limits set by patriarchal paternalistic (6 data). (2) The lyrics of Katy Perry songs have a criticism of women who should be free from all form of threats of violence, have a facilities in various field and should not always subservient to the men and social law. However, ‘Gram Parsons’ is used throughout this document. Following his father’s suicide, Gram’s mother Avis subsequently married Robert Parsons, whose surname Gram adopted. Born Ingram Cecil Connor III, 5th November 1946 - 19th September 1973 and credited as being the founder of modern ‘country-rock’, Gram Parsons was hugely influenced by The Everly Brothers and included a number of their songs in his live and recorded repertoire – most famously ‘Love Hurts’, a truly wonderful rendition with a young Emmylou Harris. He also recorded ‘Brand New Heartache’ and ‘Sleepless Nights’ – also the title of a posthumous album – and very early, in 1967, ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Many would attest that ‘country-rock’ kicked off with The Everly Brothers, and in the late sixties the album Roots was a key and acknowledged influence, but that is not to deny Parsons huge role in developing it. Gram Parsons is best known for his work within the country genre but he also mixed blues, folk, and rock to create what he called “Cosmic American Music”. While he was alive, Gram Parsons was a cult figure that never sold many records but influenced countless fellow musicians, from the Rolling Stones to The Byrds.

A análise parte do pressuposto que o videoclipe tornou-se um discurso que difunde pensamentos e ideologias sobre os usos da tecnologia. Além disso, serve como transmissão de valores e informações, mesmo que não explícitos. Neste contexto, foram utilizados estudos bibliográficos como a obra de Barros (1999), Baudrillard (1991), Jenkins (2009) entre outros estudiosos da área. PALAVRAS-CHAVE: semiótica; discursiva; videoclipe; tecnologia; cibercultura ​ Introdução O ínicio das produções audiovisuais dos videoclipes musicais é datado nos anos 1970 com a banda de rock “The Beatles”4. Os integrantes do grupo passaram a substituir suas apresentações ao vivo na TV por gravações5, e a partir disso, produziram um vídeo promocional para a sua canção "Bohemian Rhapsody”, composta em 1975 pelo cantor Freddie Mercury6. A difusão dessas produções desencadeou na expansão dessa mídia de divulgação do trabalho até que, em 1981 com o surgimento da Music TeleVision MTV7, esse mercado se fortaleceu e ampliou sua função na indústria fonográfica.
