Orthodox Christians believe that taking the Eucharist signifies oneness in faith, life and worship. Reception of the Eucharist by Christians not fully united with the Orthodox Church would imply a unity that does not yet exist and for which we must all pray. When the Eucharist is offered all Christians are invited to approach the . Those who are members of the Orthodox Church and have prepared themselves through prayer, , attendance at Great Vespers (if possible) and recent may indicate that these things are true by crossing their arms in front of their chests. (Those for whom it is physically possible refrain from food and drink in the morning before taking Holy Communion so that in the truest sense we “break the fast” with Christ’s own Mystical Feast.) Those who are not members of the Orthodox Church or have not made the necessary preparations are invited to come forward with their arms at their sides, say to the , “Father, bless” and receive a blessing.
