Although nobody guessed the correct date, my brother in law Dave got his weight bang on (8lb). Altogether we raised £35 and this goes towards research into how we can help people with diabetes. John and I have been overwhelmed by all the cards, gifts and best wishes we have received for William and we would like to say a massive "Thank You " to you all for them. He is inundated with gorgeous clothes (which he is quickly growing into (and out of)), and beautiful gifts which we will cherish forever. Thank you all very much. I was absolutely mortified by the error in last month's BaSE and I'm gratified that Jackie and John trusted me with these beautiful photos of William. Alison

Bridestowe Scout Group needs Adult Volunteers Bridestowe Scout Group is a friendly, fun-loving scout group which meets every Wednesday evening during the school term at Bridestowe Village Hall. It attracts children and young people from Bridestowe, Bratton , Boasley, Lewdown, , Sourton and beyond and helps them learn new skills, make new friends and experience the incredible environment of the Dartmoor National Park. But, like all scout groups, it is run entirely by volunteers. Bridestowe Scout Group is currently looking for adult volunteers to help run the Beavers Scouts (age 6 - 8 years) and Cub Scouts (age 8 -10.5 years). This is a great opportunity to make new friends, acquire new skills and gain valuable experience working with children and young people in the local community. The work is great fun and hugely rewarding. You don’t need any special qualifications or experience, as full training and support is provided through the Scouting Association. I'm a homeowner, and I've been looking for ways to cut my energy bills. I've just received a leaflet about the Green Deal - is there anything I should know before I decide whether to sign up? The Green Deal is a new Government scheme to help with energy saving improvements to your home such as loft insulation, double glazing and solar panels. The scheme lets you make these improvements without having to pay up-front. Instead, you take out a loan which is repaid through the savings on your energy bills. Like any credit arrangement, the Green Deal is a serious financial commitment, so you need to think carefully about whether it's right for you. The loan is attached to properties, not people, so if you move house then repayments will pass to the next owner or tenant. You'll have to let them know that loan is attached to the property before they agree to buy. The scheme is designed so that savings always outstrip repayments. But this isn't a guarantee, so taking out a Green Deal loan may mean that your bills increase. If you're on an electricity meter repayments will be taken off your credit in small amounts several times a day, so you may find that your credit is used up faster. If you decide to go ahead, the first step is an assessment of your home, which you often have to pay for. Green Deal assessors and providers must be officially accredited - you can check by looking at the central register at gdorb.decc.gov.uk/consumersearch. If you decide to go ahead after your assessment, there is a seven-day cooling off period . If you change your mind during the cooling off period, you won't have to pay a cancellation fee, although you are likely to have to pay some of the assessment cost if work has been carried out before you cancel. Green Deal loans are covered by the Consumer Credit Act, which gives you important rights. If you have a complaint, you should contact your provider. If they can't sort out your problem, you can contact the Energy or Financial Services Ombudsman. If you can't save money through the Green Deal, you may be able to get extra financial help under the Energy Company Obligation (ECO) for energy saving improvements to your home, including solid wall insulation and cavity wall insulation. Get free, confidential, independent advice from your local Citizens Advice Bureau. See www.adviceguide.org.uk or your local phone book for contact details. Also get advice about the Green Deal, the Energy Company Obligation and other ways to get help to save energy in your home from the Energy Savings Advice Service on 0300 123 1234 or from Home Energy Scotland 0808 808 2282.

Katherine Curtis lives in Southerly, Sourton and attends Okehampton College. She is a happy, smiley 12 year old girl with a very vivid imagination. She loves everything about horses and country life in general so it's no surprise that her books are based loosely on this.

Katherine has had a passion for creating elaborate stories since a very young age. She was unfortunately diagnosed with Absence and Complex Partial Epilepsy as a 5yr old and although this could not dampen her story telling skills it did result in the stalling of her academic development.

Although Katherine still has learning disabilities, she is determined that nothing, especially not her health, will stop her achieving her dreams.

Her book is on sale in several locations both locally and nationwide, but you can get a copy from Riverside Stores or Katherine herself.

Sourton Parish Hall celebrated it 50th anniversary on Saturday 14th September. The afternoon began with a whist drive and there were a lot of people playing - people who had travelled long distances to play whist. The afternoon finished with tea and a specially decorated cake. Geraldine Jury, Chairman, thanked everyone for coming, and particularly Ivor Pellow for organising it. The barn dance in the evening went well and the few people who came enjoyed it. Thanks go to Walter Shortage Hose Pipe Band for providing the live music, to the Okehampton Lions for the loan of their gazebo and finally to the parish hall committee, and their husbands and partners, for all their hard work. Ali BaSE Page 6 Sponsored walk needs your support On Saturday October 5th a small group of local mums will be walking 30 miles to raise money that will go towards acquiring a mini bus for their local pre school. Mel Ford, who has organised the walk, explained how Treetops would greatly benefit from having their own mini bus. "We will be able to take children out on fun and educational trips. They already visit the Aquarium, Alder and Dartmoor but there's always the worry of sticking to the hire times and the terms. With our own minibus we could go further afield and wherever we want, giving us much greater freedom to choose where we can take the children. And it's not only the pre-school that benefits from these trips, but holiday club too! At present Treetops has to rely on staff members' cars and hired buses to transport children around." The walkers will set off from making for Lydford Castle and finishing at and all in one day. If you would like to support the walkers you can donate in the following ways. You can donate online : http://bit.ly/12Jxxk4 or sign the sponsor form that will be in Riverside Stores. Your support will be very much appreciated.

Animal Charity Celebrates Triathlon Success Wingletang Rescue and Re-homing Centre are delighted with the support they received for their first ever triathlon event to raise money for Devon's rescue animals. On Sunday the 1st September, a total of 62 sponsored members of the public turned out to walk, horse-ride or cycle ride to help rescue animals - some brave challengers even did all three! The three part challenge, named 'Tri 4 Rescue' started at 10am with a 4.5 mile walk from rescue centre, near Tavistock and finishing at the Inn, where many of the walkers stayed for lunch. This was followed by a 6 mile horse ride and a 13.5 mile cycle ride. "We were absolutely delighted with the support for our latest event“ Says Niki Ging, who manages Margaret Green Animal Rescue's Wingletang Centre with her husband, Alan. "So far we have raised around £2,000 and there is still more to come in.“ The Centre has seen an increase in the number of cats and dogs that have been brought to them in the last few months. They receive no government funding and rely heavily on public support to care for the animals that come in until they can find them new, loving homes. "We would like to say a huge thank you to all the people who came to our triathlon event as well as those who sponsored. Also we would like to say a big thank you to Chris and Jo Wordingham who run the Peter Tavy Inn, for being so supportive of our event, and for serving brilliant food!“ If you would like to donate to Margaret Green Animal Rescue or are thinking of giving a pet a loving home, please call Wingletang Rescue and Re-homing Centre on 01822 810 215 or visit www.margaretgreenanimalrescue.org.uk for more information.

BaSE Page 17 Devon's Community Transport Awareness Day. Wednesday 9th October 2013.

The purpose of Voluntary Car schemes are to provide lifts for frail, elderly people and people with disabilities who find access to public transport difficult.

Transport is provided by volunteers using their own cars to give access to appointments, shops and other amenities we can all, so easily, take for granted. Demand for the service continues to grow putting pressure on the band of volunteers who give up their time and the organisations that coordinate the service. In Devon there are approximately 60 schemes which cover different areas.

All the schemes are always looking for community minded individuals who would like to make a real difference to people who are experiencing difficulties getting out and about. Travel expenses are paid to the driver at a rate of 45p per mile.

The schemes aim to increase independence and mobility of older people and people with disabilities and are vital in the rural areas served.

Remember as a volunteer for a Voluntary Car Scheme you will be making a huge difference to a large number of people who would otherwise be isolated.

A user of the voluntary car scheme said ’It was such a relief and I do not know how I would have managed otherwise. I am so grateful for such help and kindness in getting to my hospital appointment'..

A Voluntary Car Driver said ’Can I take this opportunity to thank you, and all the people involved for all the great work you do, and say that I am proud to be a small part of it'.

’Transport for Your Community" is organising a Community Transport Awareness Day across Devon on Wednesday 9th October 2013.

Okehampton & District Community Transport Group are holding a Coffee Morning on Saturday 12th October from 10am to 12noon at The Church Hall, Okehampton. Please call in and have a chat.

For more information please ring 01837 55000 and speak to Sue or Liz.

Sourton Down Cross As the holiday traffic piles down the A30 very few realise they are passing one of the older crosses to be found on Dartmoor. Also it serves as an example of re-cycling down through the ages as the granite feature bears the scars of the stone cutters chisel from early Celtic times through to recent days. The first recorded evidence of the cross was is in 1874 when Spence Bate describes it being “on the Okehampton Road’; near the village of Sourton, on the high road from Tavistock to Okehampton.” When the new Okehampton by-pass road was being built in 1986 the cross was removed and re-erected in its present position in 1993. This operation gave an ideal opportunity for archaeological investigation which sadly revealed nothing startling apart from an OS bench mark below the ground which suggests that even this site was not the cross’s original one. Ok, so what is all the excitement about? In a nutshell it is basically three words - PRINCIP{I} | [FILIV] | A/VDETI or PRINCIP{I} | [IV]RI[CI] | A/VDE[T]I. The translation of which goes along the lines of ‘Principius the son of Audentius’ which would indicate that at one time the cross was a memorial stone or grave marker. The inscription was written in mainly Latin capitals and also includes traces of a pattern and a Chi Rio cross. It has been suggested that the words were actually cut and rubbed out as opposed to pocking. Clearly this would indicate an early age for the stone and English Heritage describe the original stone as an inscribed stone dating between the 6th and BaSE Page 19 8th centuries. So here we have an early Christian inscribed stone standing somewhere in the vicinity of Sourton? Then sometime between the 9th and 11th centuries somebody decided that they wanted a wayside cross erected. The stone cutter looked around and came to the conclusion that the early stone would be ideal for a cross, possibly to save time in cutting a new slab. He then set to work fashioning a cross and realised that the size of the slab would only allow such a shape to have very short arms. As can be seen from the picture above the re-shaping cut away much of the original patterning but just managed to leave the Latin inscription intact. For around 600 years the cross stood in peace, then a way warden was given the task of erecting an early signpost or directional marker. Once again the cross was deemed as being the perfect thing, it simply would involve cutting the respective directional markers on its face. So after the mason did his work the cross then sported an ‘H’ () on its north-western face, ‘T’ (Tavistock) on its south- eastern face, ‘O’ (Okehampton) on its north-eastern face, and ‘L’ (Launceston) on its south- western face. It has been argued that this was done sometime after 1696 because it was in this year that Parliament passed an act for stones to be erected with the appropriate letters of directional town markers. When the Okehampton by-pass was being built the cross was taken to nearby Okehampton Castle for safe keeping. Once it had been taken up an examination revealed an Ordnance Survey bench mark had been cut into it, this had been previously unseen as in-situ it was under the ground. This would suggest that previously the cross must have been situated elsewhere in a place that would have given the surveyors access to cut the bench mark. Either that or the ground level had increased at its latest situation, or it has sunk deeper into its socket hole. BaSE Page 20 NEWS FROM ROSEANNE & JANE AT THE WHITE HART INN

The evenings are certainly drawing in now but, we have only had to light our fire on a couple of occasions so far due to the continuing balmy weather. It is lovely and comforting though, to have a crackling log fire to offer warmth and cosiness to the pub. Guest ales of 6X and Doombar have been well received along with our regular real ales of Legend and Dartmoor. The latter being supplied from The Dartmoor Brewery, up in . We shall shortly be having Jail Ale back on tap again too, also from The Dartmoor Brewery. You may find it interesting to know that The Dartmoor Brewery is situated in the very heart of the Dartmoor National Park at 1400 feet above sea level and is the highest brewery in England. We have also recently learnt that grain used in their brewing process is grown in the fields around Bridestowe - now that's a local, home grown ale! Now that the holiday season is over, we are planning lots of interesting functions and events to fill those longer darker evenings. Planned dates so far are as follows: Saturday 5th October (6pm - 9pm) is our first ‘Taste of ...' evening where we will be offering a taste of Italy, with a mouth watering range of pizzas and pasta dishes. Booking is advisable to avoid disappointment. Wednesday 9th October (8.30pm) our next quiz night in aid of Bridestowe Scouts. Saturday 12th October (8.30 pm onwards ) we have a great live band ‘The EDGe' booked in. Three guys called Eddie, Dave and Gordie, will be performing rock, blues, reggae and also contemporary songs. Thursday 31st October ~ Halloween (5pm - 6pm) we will be inviting children of the village to pop in anytime between 5pm and 6pm for refreshment whilst they are trick or treating around the village. Just a simple affair for those children who love to dress up on the night and meet up with their friends for a ‘spooky snack'. Please note that children must be accompanied by an adult. Thursday 31st October ~ Halloween (6pm - 9pm) For the grown up kids amongst you we shall have Halloween Specials on the menu, with a ‘prize' for anyone dressing up! BaSE Page 21 A team from Bridestowe and Sourton are undertaking the task of compiling a joint parish plan, a document that will reflect the character of both parishes, give a vision of how the parishes would like to develop over the next decade and state clearly what they feel is important to preserve. We have had some feedback from Bridestowe and Sourton already and are hoping for more from Sourton after the Harvest Supper. Distinct themes are emerging. Bridestowe wants to ensure the future of the shop and pub, has concerns about speeding traffic and congestion due to parking. Sourton doesn't want wind turbines in any shape or form but would like to have a better car park outside their parish hall. Both communities want faster Broadband; neither want a large number of new houses but affordable housing for local people is an issue. The next step is to contact local businesses and groups for they will have unique perspectives on their communities . A meeting has been arranged for 22nd October from 6pm - 8pm in Bridestowe Village Hall and representatives of all local businesses, groups, schools and churches are invited PLUS anyone who wishes to contribute their views. If anyone would like to join our team they would be very welcome. Contact number 01837 861157

Joint Services The end of August saw four Anglican parishes (including us) get together at for our monthly joint service. Those of us who make the effort to travel to a different village really enjoy these occasions. And of course, every four months everyone else comes to us! The October service (on 27th) will be at Bridestowe again, and we do encourage many folk to be with us. We assure you of a fuller church, a good occasion and a warm welcome.

September started with the Anglicans joining the Methodists for the joint Café Service in the Methodist Church. It was a very happy occasion, and both churches appreciate the variety that these joint services bring to our patterns of prayer and worship. The next joint- Bridestowe service will be the Methodist Harvest Service on Sunday October 6th. And on September 8th the Methodists were joined by other Methodists from Broadley - with our pioneer Anglican priest Revd David Muir preaching. We value all these ways of joining other Christians for worship, as it helps us be more open-minded and focus on the most important things about our Faith. It does mean, though, that there is not always a service in both our churches each Sunday, so do check the dates in BaSE before turning up. BaSE Page 23 Battle of Britain The Battle of Britain service held at St.Bridget's Parish Church on the 15th of September was a very moving service led by the Rev.Richard Bache during which we remembered the very great sacrifice made by the pilots and ground crew of the Royal Air Force during that very critical period of the second World War.

Parish Church Harvest Celebrations Harvest Festival at St.Bridget's started with the decorating of our Church on the morning of Saturday 21st September - thank you to all who helped and donated flowers , vegetables and fruit and particularly to Cynthia Higbee for making and donating her lovely Harvest Loaf. On Sunday 23rd September we held our Harvest Festival Service led by the Rev. Richard Bache and were joined by our Methodist friends and friends from Sourton. We were particularly pleased to have three of our teenagers, Amy and Holly Pearce and Jo Waddington join members of our Church and the Methodist Church in various aspects of the Service and then on Monday the 24th September we held our Harvest Supper the meal being cooked by our long-standing Chef Jonathan and his wife Carole Whiteley which was enjoyed by all who were present followed by a delicious selection of desserts - a very big thank you to all who provided these. Thank you also to all who helped to put the event together and to the great generosity shown by everyone who provided the raffle prizes and the items for the Auction and, of course, to those people who bid for those items . The overall sum raised on the evening amounted to the grand total of £624.35 less expenses, and the proceeds of the Auction amounting to £202.00 which will be donated to the charity Farming Community Network, the net balance going to Church funds.

Bell Ringing Our learners at St. Bridget’s are progressing steadily under what is quite an intense training regime. With nine attending practices regularly it has become something of a challenge within a challenge to make sure they all get teaching appropriate to each individual’s stage of learning. We now have two practices each week. On a Monday evening the bells are silenced in order to reduce the noise effect, and to allow one to one teaching on a particular bell. A second practice takes place each Friday evening when a small band of ringers, press-ganged from other towers come along to allow some of the learners to take it in turns to ring with the other bells. Without exception those who have been brave enough to start learning to ring have found it to be harder than it looks. However, their determination and enthusiasm will no doubt get them through the learning process to the stage where they can ring for the service at St. Bridget’s on December 22nd. when they will be able to take great pride in having met the challenge that they are working so hard towards. Please think about taking part in the sponsorship of the bell ringing by the Team by adding your name to the Sponsor form to be found on the display at the rear of the Church or by having a word with Bill Thirtle on 01271 378815. Parish Church Repairs A working party is continuing to draw up details for the work necessary to refurbishing

BaSE Page 24 the bell tower of the Parish Church, and the Friends continue to develop ways of raising the money required. Our thanks to a resident of Lydford who kindly donated both their time and materials for a temporary repair to the cracked leading on the tower roof. Similar offers of time and/or materials are welcome (although as a listed building we have to be careful what work we put in hand). We are also grateful for a recent gully clear-out conducted by the Friends; and again your time for such manageable jobs to keep our Parish Church in good order would be welcomed.

Need prayer? We know that many more people pray these days, than go to church. Remember that the Parish Church is open every day for quiet prayer. There is also a small group of folk who meet every Wednesday morning to pray in confidence for those in need; if you would like them to pray for you or for someone you love, contact Brian Maddaford on 01837 861402. We can be assured of a genuine care for your need, and faithful prayer to God on your behalf. There is nothing magic about prayer, but we believe there is a God in heaven who cares about us, who wants the best for us, who always does something in response to heartfelt prayer, and who sometimes does something remarkable.

Christmas is coming! Another reminder of the Parish Church Christmas Fayre in November. Please put aside some of your preserves for sale on the Preserves Stall, and look out some less-used books for the Book Stall.

Julie Hatton has volunteered to be the WI rep. for the village hall. It was noted with approval that the Government is at last proposing to put a tax on plastic bags. After some discussion it was decided not to send a representative to the centenary meeting at the Royal Albert Hall. Two members attended ’s 90th anniversary party and reported that it was a most enjoyable evening. The anniversary meal in November is believed to be Bridestowe’s 20th. which we hope will be in the White Hart pub in the village as it has been in previous years. A possible date will be the 27th. November. A ‘get well soon’ card has been sent to Ann Tait, our past Treasurer, who has been unwell recently and is in hospital. Unfortunately our speaker for the evening was unable to attend so members, Julie Hatton and Mavis Padley, stepped into the breach and related how much they had enjoyed their visits to Denman College. Well done and thanks to the both of them for coping with such short notice!

Flower of the month: 1st Sheila Albon, 2nd Mavis Padley. The President asked for the cup to be returned in November. It was decided that the December meeting would be a party at lunchtime (2.30 p.m.) with nibbles and ‘home entertainment’ games. The next meeting will be on the 16th October when the speaker will be Robin Hill on ‘40 Years on Dartmoor’. All welcome.

BaSE Page 26 Bridestowe Cricket Club 2013 Wow! The end of another BCC cricket season. Because top-class cricket at the Millaton Ground is almost always played outdoors, on an uncovered pitch, and rain prevents play, the cricket season is geared to coincide with the driest months of the year. The hours of daylight and the temperature are also factors; the winter days are too short and often too dark, and the temperature is too low, for playing cricket to be practical. In the UK, the cricket season starts mid-April and ends in September, And so cricket for 2013 has drawn to a close. August was a nail biting finish to the Devon League E Division competition. Bridestowe CC went into the last league game of the season nervously looking at the other results and not sure those results to date were good enough to stay up. Despite a thrilling win in the penultimate match away to , staying up in E Division was not secure and the threat of relegation loomed as the Millaton Arena hosted 3rd placed . It all hinged on the last league game of the season. Now Whimple were not just turning up ...... a win for them could mean promotion, so the outcome was hotly contested as both teams had a lot to gain or lose pending the result ...... it was all down to the wire! A thrilling culmination was therefore eagerly anticipated. Bowling first, BCC set the conditions for success with a great display of bowling dismissing Whimple for 146. To win, oh to win, BCC chasing 146 to secure E Division cricket for next year and with true BCC grit and spirit the Club came home with a well-deserved victory by 6 wickets and 20 points which ensured our safety, without having to rely on the other results. A fitting end to the League season. Whilst our League status was secured there was more cricket to follow; the 2013

season was capped with a great game of cricket as the President's XI (John Leonard) took on a BCC XI. The sun shone for a willow on leather bonanza in a fiercely contested game which saw the BCC XI narrowly beat the President‹s Invitation XI by 27 runs. Fantastic fun, fantastic support. A full match report is on the BCC website. Picture below, President John Leonard congratulating the winning captain, James Ewen. This completes another wonderful summer of cricket. I would like to thank the President John Leonard, our Chairman, Neon Reynolds, the Club Committee, the players and most importantly you! As sponsors and supporters of our Cricket Club BaSE Page 27 through the summer sun, at all our fund raising events and on the boundary cheering on our players, cricket continues to be played at Bridestowe to a high standard and long may it continue to do so. All our match reports and events are posted on our website (https://sites.google.com/site/bridestowecricketclub/), please feel free to take a look and we look forward to seeing you at the club. Lewdown Past A History of Farming on Dartmoor Wednesday 23 October at 7.30pm An illustrated talk by Colin Pearse This month's speaker ought to know what he is talking about, having been farming on Dartmoor for 60 years. Colin is also a champion and specialist breeder of the Dartmoor Whiteface sheep (Dartmoor's 'prapper' sheep): you may remember them from 'Adam's Farm' on 'Countryfile.' While indigenous to Dartmoor and well adapted to its upland nature, Whitefaces are now classed as 'at risk', due to several centuries of competition with even hardier breeds from our northern mountains and uplands. Colin is also an author of several books, featuring poetry and superb photography, about his beloved moor, as well as writing about the Dartmoor Whiteface sheep. His talk will be illustrated, but in a slightly unconventional way and this sounds to be an evening with a difference. Do come along and find out: visitors are always very welcome. We meet at Broadley Chapel at 7.30pm. Charge £2 for members, £3 for non-members to include light refreshments. Visitors may like to phone 01566 783396/01837 861510 nearer the time, to check there has not been a rare change of programme, or for further information. Hilary Whitelock
