Archival Collection 26 Title: Karl E. Ludvigsen papers, 1905-2011. Creator: Ludvigsen, Karl E. Call Number: Archival Collection 26 Quantity: 931 cubic feet (514 flat archival boxes, 98 clamshell boxes, 29 filing cabinets, 18 record center cartons, 15 glass plate boxes, 8 oversize boxes). Abstract: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers 1905-2011 contain his extensive research files, photographs, and prints on a wide variety of automotive topics. The papers reflect the complexity and breadth of Ludvigsen’s work as an author, researcher, and consultant. Approximately 70,000 of his photographic negatives have been digitized and are available on the Revs Digital Library. Thousands of undigitized prints in several series are also available but the copyright of the prints is unclear for many of the images. Ludvigsen’s research files are divided into two series: Subjects and Marques, each focusing on technical aspects, and were clipped or copied from newspapers, trade publications, and manufacturer’s literature, but there are occasional blueprints and photographs. Some of the files include Ludvigsen’s consulting research and the records of his Ludvigsen Library. Scope and Content Note: The Karl E. Ludvigsen papers are organized into eight series. The series largely reflects Ludvigsen’s original filing structure for paper and photographic materials. Series 1. Subject Files [11 filing cabinets and 18 record center cartons] The Subject Files contain documents compiled by Ludvigsen on a wide variety of automotive topics, and are in general alphabetical order. -
BMW History BMW in the 1910S - the Beginning
BMW history BMW in the 1910s - the beginning To better understand BMW today you have to know and understand BMW history. The last century gives the “flavor” of today’s BMW cars, the ingredient that makes them so special. This “special” can be almost seen as the soul of a person. BMW cars have an unmistakably personality and an obsessive care about the feeling of driving, thus their slogan "the ultimate driving machine". This creates a bond between the car and the driver that may last for a lifetime. These three magic letters stand for Bayerische Motoren Werke, or in English, Bavarian Motor Works. The "Motor" is the core of this acronym and is the foundation; the key part around which BMW builds every product. BMW Drives invites you to be part in this amazing trip and you will find out the story that lies behind BMW. HOW BMW PROGRESSED FROM THIS TO 1913 The man who started all was Karl Friedrich Rapp in October 1913. Not everybody knows that BMW started as a manufacturer of aircraft with Austro-Daimler, who was unable to meet its demands that of building V12 Aero engines under license. The company expanded too quickly, and by 1916 Karl Friedrich Rapp resigned from the company because of financial troubles. The company was taken over by two Austrians Franz- Josef Popp and Max Fritz backed by a Vienna engines. Rapp establishes "Rapp-Motorenwerke" in a former bicycle factory near Munich. He starts manufacturing his own aircraft engines but unfortunately they suffered form problems with vibrations. Close to Rapp´s factory, Gustav Otto, the son of the inventor of the four-stroke internal combustion engine, sets up a business building small aircrafts. -

Cosa fare? L’operazione Zagato è alle spalle e poi al Portello è quasi pronta la SZ coda tronca. E’ inutile tornare su un concetto ormai di Michelotti e Conrero superato. Proviamo a cambiare. -

September 2016 3 GIOVANNI MICHELOTTI Mark Parsons
September 2016 GIOVANNI MICHELOTTI Mark Parsons Giovanni Michelotti was born on October 6, 1921 in Turin, Italy. His father was a machine shop manager at Italia’s engine factory in Turin and the influence on a young Giovanni for mechanics started there. Giovanni left school at the age of fifteen and started an apprenticeship at the Stabilimenti Farina in Cambiano near Turin, a design house founded by Battista “Pinin” Farina, later becoming the famous Pininfarina. Two years into his apprenticeship his first design was for the Lancia Astura in 1938, which never went into production. After the war his design for the 1947 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 went into production and then designs for various Talbot’s gave him the credentials to start up his own studio, named “Studio Technico e Carrozzeria G. Michelotti” in 1949 in Turin. He worked freelance for Bertone, Ghia, Allemano and Vignale and his first independent design was for the Ferrari 166, the first of many for Ferrari, Maserati, Lancia and Alfa Romeo. His breakthrough came with a design commissioned by Briggs Cunningham for his C3 coupe. He went on to produce designs for BMW, DAF, Volvo, Hino, Daihatsu, and even designed the P76 for Leyland Australia. He did all his work by pencil, mostly at full scale, and could produce designs in one day. It was while he was working for Vignale that he did the facelift of the phase 3 Vanguard in 1958, which brought him to the attention of Standard and led him to be responsible for all the new Triumphs from the late 50’s on. -

View Across the MG-Fence
Column View across the MG-Fence Special bodies for MGs – was that necessary? Here we see at the front of a very special MG. To top it up, parked under southern skies. Type F1 by Abbey Coachworks Ltd, London A F-Type six-cylinder Magna is actually different – rather than a two-seater with a never-ending bonnet, or as four-seater tourer. Probably Abbey built this odd looking coupé on special request. And then painted it in a two tone finish and added false pram fittings. P-Type Midget by Carrosserie Hänni, Zurich The Zurich importer J.H. Keller is responsible for the fact that MG was already known in our area in the 1930s. Apparently, a roadster from the factory was too little modern at the time, and it had to have elegantly curved fenders, a rear-inclined radiator and an elegantly clad rear like Fiat or Alfa Romeo. When you take a closer look, you can see that this must be a very unusual vehicle that is sitting there in the hilly surroundings of upper Italy. It is a Pietro Frua tailored prototype – an example of an upcoming model from Abingdon. Nevertheless, many friends of the marque were feeling relieved when a few years later the MGB hit the market with a “more MG like” appearance and not so Mediterranean. However, custom built – or special bodies Elegant Sports Tourer by Reinbolt & have been offered as long as the marque Christé, Basel, approx.1938 exists. Here are some examples.
