Lesser Feasts and Fasts 2018 Conforming to General Convention 2018 1 Preface Christians have since ancient times honored men and women whose lives represent heroic commitment to Christ and who have borne witness to their faith even at the cost of their lives. Such witnesses, by the grace of God, live in every age. The criteria used in the selection of those to be commemorated in the Episcopal Church are set out below and represent a growing consensus among provinces of the Anglican Communion also engaged in enriching their calendars. What we celebrate in the lives of the saints is the presence of Christ expressing itself in and through particular lives lived in the midst of specific historical circumstances. In the saints we are not dealing primarily with absolutes of perfection but human lives, in all their diversity, open to the motions of the Holy Spirit. Many a holy life, when carefully examined, will reveal flaws or the bias of a particular moment in history or ecclesial perspective. It should encourage us to realize that the saints, like us, are first and foremost redeemed sinners in whom the risen Christ’s words to St. Paul come to fulfillment, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” The “lesser feasts” provide opportunities for optional observance. They are not intended to replace the fundamental celebration of Sunday and major Holy Days. As the Standing Liturgical Commission and the General Convention add or delete names from the calendar, successive editions of this volume will be published, each edition bearing in the title the date of the General Convention to which it is a response. -

Further, there is a growing and related literature on what is referred to by economists as ‘information cascades’ on such networks. However, there is little discussion of the specific events which lead to either the creation of a network in the first instance, or of how a network which is latent in terms of its awareness evolves into a network on which individual behaviour/beliefs are actually altered. In this paper, we describe the process of emergence and evolution of a historical cultural and social network across which the opinions and behaviour of individuals were influenced. We also illustrate how empirical networks can be reconstructed relying principally on information contained in qualitative, historical sources. The specific example we use is religious belief in England in the 1550s. -
Assessing Thomas Cranmer's Appropriation of St. Ambrose's
ATR/97.1 Real Presence, Spiritual Presence: Assessing Thomas Cranmer’s Appropriation of St. Ambrose’s Eucharistic Doctrine Daniel Marrs* While Thomas Cranmer’s frequent appeals to the church fathers are often noted, focused evaluations of his theological use of par- ticular patristic sources remain lacking. In a manner both histori- cal and theological, the present article assesses the nature and quality of Thomas Cranmer’s appropriation of Ambrose of Milan’s doctrine of Christ’s eucharistic presence. Devoting special atten- tion to Cranmer’s A Defence, in which he makes extensive use of Ambrose’s De mysteriis and De sacramentis, the author contends that Cranmer’s engagement with Ambrose contextualizes and in- forms his final vision of Christ’s presence in the eucharist, and is therefore able to bring greater clarity to the ongoing debates sur- rounding Cranmer’s understanding of eucharistic presence. Waller 1 An Erasmian Pilgrimage to Walsingham By Gary Waller Professor of Literature, Cultural Studies and Drama Studies Purchase College, State University of New York In the summer of 2006, I undertook what I will explain was an ‘Erasmian’ pilgrimage to the Shrine of Our Lady of Walsingham, in remote northern Norfolk. I did so partly for scholarly purposes, partly from nostalgia for peregrinations there in student days. What I discovered--as in the case of so many folk who longen “to goon on pilgrimages”--was an unexpected measure of the uncanny and I think that fellow peregrinators, scholars and travelers alike, might be amused by sharing my discoveries. Erasmus, who made pilgrimages to Walsingham in 1512 and 1524, traveling (as I did) from Cambridge, gave a detailed, though fictionalized, description in one of the dialogues of his Colloquies.1 He went to Walsingham when it was England’s most important medieval Marian pilgrimage site, surpassed only by the shrine of St Thomas a Becket in Canterbury as the most popular place of pilgrimage in England,. -

PARISH OF SKIPTON* HAVE reserved for this parish, the most interesting part of my subject, a place in Wharfdale, in order to deduce the honour and fee of Skipton from Bolton, to which it originally belonged. In the later Saxon times Bodeltone, or Botltunef (the town of the principal mansion), was the property of Earl Edwin, whose large possessions in the North were among the last estates in the kingdom which, after the Conquest, were permitted to remain in the hands of their former owners. This nobleman was son of Leofwine, and brother of Leofric, Earls of Mercia.J It is somewhat remarkable that after the forfeiture the posterity of this family, in the second generation, became possessed of these estates again by the marriage of William de Meschines with Cecilia de Romille. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

The "Descent of Comfort Sands & of his Children," by Temple Prime, New York, 1886; and "The Direct Forefathers and All the Descendants of Richardson Sands, etc.," by Benjamin Aymar Sands, New York, 1916, (from both of which volumes I have obtained material) are excellent as far as they go, but their scope is very limited, as was the intention of their com pilers. I have not attempted to undertake a full and complete genealogy of this family, but have endeavored to fill certain lines and bring more nearly to date the data collected by the late Fanning C. T. Beck and the late LeBaron Willard, (brother-in-law of my aunt Caroline Sands Willard). I take this opportunity to express my thanks to all members of the family who have rendered cheerful and cooperative assistance. It had been my intention to have a Part II in this volume, in which the English Family of Sands, Sandes, Sandis or Sandys were to have been treated, and where the connecting link between James Sands of Block Island and his English forebears was to be made clear. -

This fraught history continued to have long-term effects on England’s religious, political, and intellectual culture. -

Convocations Called by Edward IV and Richard of Gloucester in 1483: Did They Ever Take Place? ANNETTE CARSON IN I 4 8 3 , THE YEAR OF THREE KINGS, a series of dramatic regime changes led to unforeseen disruptions in the normal machinery of English government. It was a year of many plans unfulfilled, beginning with those of Edward IV who was still concerned over unfinished hostilities with James III of Scotland, and had also made clear his intention to wreak revenge on the treacherous Louis XI of France. All this came to naught when Edward's life ended suddenly and unexpectedly on 9 April. His twelve-year-old son, Edward V, was scheduled to be crowned as his successor, with Edward IV's last living brother Richard, Duke of Gloucester, appointed as lord protector. But within two months Richard had become king in his place, with young Edward deposed on the grounds that his father's marriage to Queen Elizabeth Woodville was both bigamous and secret, thus rendering their children illegitimate. Since this article will be looking closely at the events of this brief period, perhaps it will be useful to start with a very simplified chronology of early 1483. The ques- tions addressed concern two convocations, called by royal mandate in February and May respectively, about which some erroneous assumptions will be revealed.' January/February Edward IV's parliament. 3 February A convocation of the southern clergy is called by writ of Edward IV. 9 April Edward IV dies. 17-19 April Edward's funeral takes place, attended by leading clergy. -
