PRINTED IN THE OF AMERICA The William Byrd Press, Inc., Richmond, Virginia Foreword

The purpose of this Genealogy of the Sands Family, which is the result of much research, is to put on record a more comprehensive account than any so far published in this country. The "Descent of & of his Children," by Temple Prime, New York, 1886; and "The Direct Forefathers and All the Descendants of Richardson Sands, etc.," by Benjamin Aymar Sands, New York, 1916, (from both of which volumes I have obtained material) are excellent as far as they go, but their scope is very limited, as was the intention of their com pilers. I have not attempted to undertake a full and complete genealogy of this family, but have endeavored to fill certain lines and bring more nearly to date the data collected by the late Fanning C. T. Beck and the late LeBaron Willard, (brother-in-law of my aunt Caroline Sands Willard). I take this opportunity to express my thanks to all members of the family who have rendered cheerful and cooperative assistance. It had been my intention to have a Part II in this volume, in which the English Family of Sands, Sandes, Sandis or were to have been treated, and where the connecting link between James Sands of Block Island and his English forebears was to be made clear. Alas my optimism received a shattering blow, or rather many blows! The most diligent search both here and in England has not as yet revealed the parentage of James Sands-Parish Registers, Visitations of English Counties, Records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, nor family papers, give a clue. It has generally been accepted for many years that James Sands was a grandson of Edwin Sandes, Archbishop of York, in the time of Elizabeth; but upon investigation, no proof is forth coming. True, there is a family of Sandes in Cornwall, England who make the same claim, but there again, no proof! However, there is considerable circumstantial evidence which I have endeavoured to show in the addenda to this book. The late Temple Prime, has I believe traced his descent through his mother Augusta Temple Palmer, to Hester Sandys daughter of Myles Sandys of Latimers, Bucks., and wife of Sir. Thomas Temple, 1st. Bart. of Stow. Likewise, the descendants of Hon. Joshua Sands, of which I am one, can trace descent through Mrs. Joshua Sands (Ann Ayscough) to Anne Sandys, only sister of Archbishop Sandes, who married Rich ard Braithwaite of Ambleside, Co. Westmoreland. Also in the addenda will be found short sketches of some members of the clan; and bits of information gleaned. The notes and pedigrees of Walkers, Hutchinsons, Rays, Guthries and Cornells will be of in terest to most descendants. Those of the families of Ayscough, Mid dagh, Holt and Henshaw will apply only to those df the Joshua, Samuel B. M., and John Middagh Sands lines. There is a book on the Ledyard Family of Hartford, so their line is not repeated here. Benjamin Aymar Sands in a forenote to his book, above mentioned, says, "While there is every reason to believe that James Sands was a grandson of , Archbishop of York (b. 1516; d. July IO. 1588) there is not sufficient evidence to justify the claim of this descent." MALCOLM SANDS WILSON New York, 1949 DESCENDANTS OF JAMES SANDS OF BLOCK ISLAND

I., 1643. His wife Sarah Walker whom he married in 1645, was the daughter of John & Catherine (Hutchinson) Walker of Portsmouth, but originally from . In 166r he and his family sailed for Block Island, where he had bought property the previous year; there they settled. His will is dated 18. June 1694 and he died Mch. 13. 1695. 3 4 James Sands of Block Island

2. Henry Sands is supposed to have been a brother or half-brother of Captain James Sands. And to have been born in England in 1618; to have come to Boston, Mass. in 1636. There is no proof of any of this. According to "Windsor's History of Boston," "Henry Sands, Merchant admitted to the first Church of Boston, with wife Sybil, Oct. 30. 1638. On Jan. 6. 1639 his daughter Deliverance baptised-cl. y. In Nov. 1639, he with others formed a new Church at Rowley-admitted Freeman Oct. 7. 1640. He died in Boston 1651." Sands - Sandes - Sandys - Sandis

The interest of the family of Edwin Sandes, Archbishop of York, who died in 1588, in the colonization of this country is well known. The Archbishop's 2nd. son Sir. Edwin Sandys was the resident treas urer in London, of the London Virginia Company and drew up the Charters of the Virginia and the Massachusetts Bay Companies; in some of the oldest, (2nd. Charter of Virginia) of which the names of his brothers, Sir. Myles, Thomas, Henry and also ap pear as members of the London Virginia Co. Sir. Edwin also drew up the code for establishment of the House of Burgesses and the Charter for the Mayflower Company, and advanced a thousand pounds to the Pilgrims for five years without interest. (The gist of this is from "My Forefathers," by Bradhurst.) "Sir. Edwin was also interested in Bermuda and one of the 8 tribes, now called parishes, into which Bermuda was divided was named the Sandys Tribe after Sir. Edwin and is still called the Sandys Parish." (From "History of the Family of Sandys," by E. S. Sandys.) George Sandys, youngest son of The Archbishop, accompanied Sir. Francis Wyatt, (husband of his niece Margaret, daughter of Sir. ) as Treasurer when Sir. Francis took up his duties as Governor of Virginia, in 1621. George had grants of land from Sir. Francis in 1624, (see "Cavaliers & Pioneers," compiled by Nell M. Nugent). While there he built the first water mill, the first bridge and the first iron works in Virginia. He was our first American poet and translated into English verse the Metamorphoses of Ovid, the first classical work to be done on our shores. Two grandsons of Archbishop Sandes, viz., Sir. Robert (son of Sir. Myles) and Rev. Robert (son of Thomas Sandys Esq.) married, re spectively, Margaret and Alice Washington, daughters of Lawrence Washington of Sulgrave, and sisters of Lawrence Washington who came to Virginia in 1657 accompanied by his 2nd. son John who was great grandfather of George Washington. Lawrence Washington's 69 'JO James Sands of Block Island eldest son Col. Henry Washington left a widow, Elizabeth (Parking ton) Washington who married Samuel Sandys of Ombersley, grandson of Sir. Samuel, eldest son of the Archbishop. Rev. Robert Sandys, above mentioned, was rector of Boddington, co. Northants., near where also resided for a time, his uncle Henry Sandys Esq., 6th. son of the Arch bishop, who had married Priscilla Chauncey, daughter of Sir. Chauncey of Edgecote, Northants., and was Sheriff there 36th. Eliza beth. It is this Henry Sandys who has been thought for many years to have been the father of James Sands of Block Island. James could not have been son of this Henry by his wife Priscilla, but it is possible that Henry married a second and even a third time. There was a Rev. Henry Sand es or Sands, a rural preacher who seems to have lived at Ipswich, Suffolk, and who was a great friend of both Adam and John Winthrop. (See "Life & Letters of John Win throp & Diary of Adam Winthrop".) He is first noted at Groton, Suffolk, the seat of the Winthrops in 1595; thereafter frequent mention of him occurs. A few quotations from the "Diary & Letters," may be in order. Under date of 1603, "The xvijth Day of July-my wife lent Mres Sands xx s uppon a siluer & gilt salt seller." (Such salts were not common in those days. The Archbishop bequeathed such a salt to Henry his 6th. son.) In 1606 Sept. 30. Adam Winthrop din~d at Mr. Sands after attending a wedding at Ipswich. Under date 1617~"June ro Mr. Sands was maried at Brettenham." (According to Col. E. S. Sandys, the bride was Frances Archisden a widow, who was buried there 17 Jan. 1617/r8.Y.Under date 1620, "Mr. Sands and his wife rode to London." So he must have married again before that time, possibly to Elizabeth Goffe daughter of Thomas Goffe, London merchant and Deputy Governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony before the arrival of Governor John Winthrop. It is certain that Edward Goffe his son was over here in 1635/36. And in a letter dated Nov. 1626 John Winthrop, then at Groton, writing to his son in New England, mentions the death and burial of Rev. Henry Sands at Groton. In letters of Aug. 14. & Sept. 9. 1630 John Winthrop, then in New England, writes to his son at Groton, "I had £ 15 of Mrs. Sands for a cow for her brother Goffe" ... "I can think of no other, but Mrs. Sands £ 15. Commend me to her; and if you see fames Sands of Block Island 71 them at Graces remember me to them." Graces was the seat of the Mildmay family, closely allied to the Winthrops and the inference is that widow Sands lived there. It has been stated that Rev. Henry Sands was dean of Shoreham in Kent, but I can find no conformation of this, though it may well be correct. It has also been claimed that Rev. Henry was a vicar as early as 1578, but no authority has been quoted. The Groton Parish Register reads-"Aug. 27. 1616 Sands, Mtres., buried." ... "Nov. 9. 1626 Sandes, Hen. Buried." These entries without doubt refer to the death of the 1st. wife and the death of Henry himself. It should be remembered that Graces was only four miles from "Edwin's Hall," Woodham Ferrers, Essex, formally named "Edwardes Manor," the home of John Sandes Esq., father of Mary, 1st. wife of Edwin Sandes, later Archbishop. There from about 1553 lived James Sandes, eldest son of Edwin and Mary. The boy was left with his grand parents when his mother with her younger son joined his father in his exile in Strasburg. The younger son died of plague and the mother of consumption about a year before the return to England of Edwin Sandes, which occurred on the day Queen Elizabeth was crowned in 1558. Edwin proceeded at once to Woodham Ferrers to see his son James and there made a Recognisance with his late wife's brother William Sandes, her father John having died shortly before; for the benefit of his son James and himself. The Recognisance was to secure to them the Woodham Ferrers Estate of about 250 acres. Edwin finally obtained it, changed its name to "Edwin's Hall" and left it to his eldest son by his 2nd. marriage to Cicely Wilford, Sir. Samuel Sandys of Ombersley; and here Cicely resided during her widowhood, com panioned by her three younger sons, Thomas, Henry and George and later by her granddaughter Bridget, daughter of her son Henry, then perhaps a child of twelve. Cicely died at Woodham Ferrers in 1610. Of James, the eldest son of Edwin's 1st. marriage, there is no further mention-not even is his death recorded in the Woodham F errers Parish Church, where a handsome monument extolls the virtues of his step-mother Cicely. There is a possibility that James Sands of Block Island could have been a grandson of this James. There is also a possibility that Rev. 'J2 fames Sands of Block Island Henry Sands was son of this James and father of James of Block Island. There is the further possibility that Henry 6th. son of Edwin the Archbishop and Rev. Henry were one and the same man. The principal and I believe, only stumbling block to this theory is the "Alumni Cantabrigienses," which states that Chauncey Sandys (son of Henry 6th. son) was admitted to Sidney College Cambridge at the age of 15 in July 1621, his father being then dead. It is just possible that the transcriber has mistaken 1627 for 1621, as many of those old documents are much worn and hard to decipher. Be that as it may, · there still can be no definite claim as to the parentage of James Sands of Block Island. The records both here and in England have been thor oughly searched by many different members of the family but with small success. The Lathrup Withington MSS. reposing in the Essex Institute at Salem, Mass., might reveal more data, but their chaotic condition and illegibility, as reported to me, would make an exhaustive inspection almost impossible, nor is it positive that Withington has noted his authorities. It is quite certain however, that James Sands of Block Island was from the Sandes or Sandys of Esthwaite, from whence the Archbishop came. The likenesses between descendants of the Archbishop and his brothers to many of the descendants of James of Block Island are to~ marked and too frequent to be matters of coincidence; sometimes i.Q. the same generation and sometimes in different generations hundreds of years apart. I am much indebted to Lieut-Col. George Owen Sandys of Graythwaite Hall, N. Lancashire, for the opportunity to compare the family portraits at Graythwaite with many of the American Sands portraits. Both he and I were amazed at some of the similarities. His interest and also that of his cousin, Lieut.-Col. Edward Seton Sandys of Richmond, has meant much in this quest for the connecting link between America and the Mother Country. I quote extracts from a letter from Col. George Sandys, dated 19:3:49: "There can be no doubt about the descent (of James Sands of Block Island) from the Sandis (de Sabulonibus or Sandes or Sandys) of Sandsfield near Burgh Sands-but the actual link is missing & I think that if you show the various possibilities in your Genealogy no one could doubt it & I see little reason to wait longer before printing." fames Sands of Block Island 73 ... "Just a word as to Miss. Water's notes on Dr. Swan's notes. I did not know the Archbishop had anything to do with Towcester. It is rather significant that James & a man called Terry wanted Block Island called Shoreham. Then there is the use of the names Samuel & Mercy in Capt. James family-this is undoubtedly significant being so near in date to the Ombersley Sandys of those names. These last two points are the pointers to the connection of Capt. James Sands with the Archbishop's family." About 1825 a letter was sent to Richard Sands Esq. of St. Johns, Nova Scotia, ( one of the loyalist descendants of James Sands of Block Island, who had moved to Nova Scotia after the American Revolution) by Mary Sandys, Marchioness of Downshire, Baroness Sandys of Ombers ley. Her letter was written in answer to one Richard Sands sent her telling her of his ancestors who settled in America. Notable points in letter from Mary Sandys, Marchioness of Down shire written about 1825 to Richard Sands Esq. of St. Johns, Nova Scotia: " ... and from the account you are so good as to give me of your connections who settled in America, I can have little doubt that your family as well as that branch of mine who were settled at Ombersly, including Dr. Edwin Sandys, were descended from the same Ancestors." The inference to be drawn from this, is that Richard Sands sent the Marchioness a sufficiently detailed pedigree of his Sands line to convince her that it was the same as her own. She goes so far as to say, "That branch of mine who were settled at Ombersly." This means the eldest line or the line of the Archbishop. "As you are good enough to give me an Account of your family, and the course of its being settled there, by the Emigration of your great Grandfather, during the troubles of the Protectorship; and so stated that your brother with other American Loyalists settled in your Province in 1783, ..." The inference here is very strong: James Sands of Block Island, the Emigrant was great grandfather of Richard Sands. As he migrated to this country, "during the troubles of the Protectorship," it shows without doubt that his family were Royalists, (the 74 fames Sands of Block Island Sandys of Ombersley, Worcestershire, were Royalists; those of Northbourne, Kent, Parliamentarians) and that he was sent to New England, a boy of about 16 to get him out of the clutches· of Parliament. ' "I have expressed my belief that your family and mine may probably have been descended from the line of the great Arch bishop; for in his family the names of Samuel and Mercy, being those of the two children of your Grandfather, frequently occur; Sir. Samuel his eldest son, who died in 1623 married a lady named Mercy daughter of Martin Culpepper Esq're, and it is probable that the Samuel and Mercy in your family might have been Christened after them." This is iteration of her belief in the connection of the two fam ilies, with the added explanation for the names given by James of Block Island to two of his children. Mary, Baroness Sandys, Marchioness of Downshire, from what I have read and been told about her, was quite a remarkable woman. "It was said of her that she had Parliament in her pocket." She was imperious and had a determined uncompromising nature; not the type of person easily imposed upon; nor one to give her opin ion lightly

Mr. George Gillingham in his charming small book on Ombersley, states "The curious fact that the present Lord Sandys is invested with the power of creating baronets of Nova Scotia, by virtue of his descent from the first Earl of Stirline or Stirling. This authority, together with the grant of Nova Scotia itself and New Brunswick, practically Canada, was in 1621 conferred by James I on Sir. William Alexander, who ac companied the King to England when he ascended the throne in 1603. The grant was vastly increased in 1625 by the addition of almost the entire northern section of what is now the United States, later con firmed by Charles I and Parliament, giving him absolute authority in a country larger than all the King's dominions elsewhere. It was the period of the Thirty Years War in Europe, in the course of which England was sometimes opposed to France. So it came about that in 1632 Canada, including Nova Sc~tia, was ceded to the French by the James Sands of Block Island 75 Treaty of S. Germain en Laye; but by way of compensation, Alexander was given ,-and made Earl of Stirline or Stirling. The Island, called then Stirline Island, together with his other American possessions, was of course alienated by the Declaration of Independence in the following century. The power to create Baronets still remains vested in his successors, never having been repealed by Act of Parlia ment or the Crown. The sole heiress to Lord Alexander of Tullibodie, Earl of Stirline and Dovan, Viscount Canada, was his great-great-great great-granddaughter Mary, Baroness Sandys, whose descendant is the present Peer, her grandson." On Aug. 4. 1948, Michael Edwin Marcus Sandys 5th. Baron of Ombersley died and was succeeded by his cousin, Lieut.-Col. Arthur Fitzgerald Sandys Hill as 6th. Baron. Ombersley Court in Worcester shire has been closed for almost a hundred years; but is now being opened by the new Peer, who is assisted by Lieut.-Col. Edward Seton Sandys. I am told that there are many chests of old documents and family papers which Col. Sandys is investigating. There is a possibility that he may run across the letter from Richard Sandys of Nova Scotia to Mary Sandys the Marchioness, in which he doubtless gave her what information he had as to his connection with the English family, which brought forth the remarks in her answering letter to him. We have the assurance of Lord Sandys, that should anything of interest to the American line be unearthed, we shall be notified. Notes on Individuals and Families

James Sands was in East Chester, Westchester Co. N. Y., in 1642. He was building a house there for Mrs. Ann Hutchinson when warned by the Indians to desist. He then went to Portsmouth, R. I. where he had grants of land Oct. 5. 1643; & Aug. 29. 1644; he was freeman at Portsmouth in 1655; Commissioner from Portsmouth to the General Court May 19. 1657; in 1660 he with others purchased Block Island from the Manisses Indians; he embarked with his family from Taun ton, Mass. in April 1661 for Block Island where he settled. He owned one-sixteenth of the island upon which he erected the only stone house there. This house in addition to its use as a dwelling, also served as a garrison and hospital in the attacks by pirates and Indians. His wife Sarah (Walker) Sands was the only doctor on the island. Mch. 1663-4, he was constable; commanded the militia company in King Philip's War; was deputy from Block Island to the General Assembly in 1665. He was tax-rater in 1670 & 1671; and in 1676 assistant warden. He was one of the foremost to petition the General Assembly for a charter of incorporation, which was granted in 1672, under the name of "New Shoreham, alias Block Island." He deeded Nov. 15. 1690 to his eldest son John, the land on which he first settled on Block Island. He was buried in the public graveyard; a large recumbent sandstone slab, bears the following inscription: "Here Lyes In Tvrred the Body of Mr. James Sands, Seniovr aged 73 Years departed This life March The 13 1695." John Sands I. had a grant of land in Portsm0uth, R. I. May 27. 1674; in 1678, 80, & 81 he was deputy to the Gener.:il Assembly from Block Island. He removed to Cow Neck, now Sa.ods Point in 1691 where he purchased the farm of Richard Cornell, this £;rm· was included in a patent taken out by Cornell in 1686; the consideration for this and part 76 James Sands of Block Island 77 of his brother Samuel's farm was £200. About 1700 he brought from Virginia to Long Island the first seeds or saplings of Locusts. This resulted in change of name from "Buckram," to Locu~t Valley, Long Island. Before his death he gave to the family of Sands half an acre as a burying ground, north of his house. He left the Home Farm to his son Nathaniel. He and his wife both died there. The following in scriptions are from their gravestones: "Here lieth ye Body "Here lieth ye Body of John Sands Of Sibell ye wife Died March ye 15th Of John Sands 1712 In ye 63d Died Decem. ye 23 Year of his Age." 1733 In ye 68: Year of her age." John Sands II. lived with his wife on Block Island ten years after their marriage; then moved to a farm in the centre of Cow Neck, where, with assistance of the Indians he built a house; here all his children were born. In 1733 he removed to his father's farm, which he purchased from his brother Nathaniel in 1736; here he died in 1763; the gravestones of his wife and himself bear the following inscriptions; "In "In Memory of Memory of John Sands Catherine Sands The 2d who departed this Relict of John Sands the 2d Life August 30th 1763. Who departed this life Aged 79 years." February rnth 1769 Aged 78 years." John Sands III. settled in 1733 on his father's farm in the centre of Cow Neck; all his children were born there, and there he and his wife died; after his death the farm passed to his eldest son John Sands IV: the following inscriptions are from the gravestones of his wife and himself: "Here "Here Lies the Body Lies the body of Of Elizabeth Sands, John Sands, The wife of John Sands, who Who departed this life, Departed this life May the rnth November the 22d 1760, 1793, aged 81 years 7 months Aged 51 years." and 13 days." 78 fames Sands of Block Island

Robert Sands, son of John III & Elizabeth (Cornell) Sands, built the "Old Homestead" at Rhinebeck, N. Y., in 1780, where he and his family lived and which is still occupied by some of his descendants. His portrait and that of his wife Phebe, have hung there for over a hundred and fifty years.

Comfort Sands, son of John III & Elizabeth (Cornell) Sands, was named for Comfort Starr of Danbury, Conn., who was visiting the family shortly after his birth; at the age of 12 years served as clerk to Stephen Thorne on Cow Neck; in 1762 he went as clerk to his brother Cornell Sands in N. Y. In 1763 he served as clerk to Joseph Drake, who kept a store in Peck Slip, where he lived until 1769; he then opened a store at Peck Slip and Queen Street (now Pearl). He had acquired a large fortune when the Revolution broke out. In 1776 he purchased a farm at New Rochelle where he removed and commenced the erec tion of a large house, but before it was completed, the British landed in October within two miles of him, and so rapid was their progress, that it was with difficulty he got his family away. His furniture and books were dispersed and the house pulled down. He went to Phila delphia then to a place called "The Swamp"; in 1777 he went to Rochester, N. Y. In 1780 he moved to a farm in the "Nine Partners" where he stayed until 1781; he then returned to Philadelphia which he made his home until 1783, when peace being declared, he went to New Rochelle, thence to New York. From the commencement of the Revolution he was almost the whole time in the public service. In 1783 he formed a partnership with his brother Joshua Sands and carried on a large business in New York until 1794- In 1793 he purchased a lot on Pine Street running through to Cedar Street, and in 1794 commenced the erection of a house thereon, planned by his wife, but before it was finished she was taken ill, and died. From 1765 to 1778 Comfort Sands held many appointments and on the latter date was member of the Legislature of New York. 1784-1798 Director of the Bank of New York. 1793-1794 Vice-President of the Chamber of Commerce. 1794-1798 President of the Chamber of Commerce. James Sands of Block Island 79

Richardson Sands, son of John III & Elizabeth (Cornell) Sands, worked in his brother Comfort's store until 1776. In 1778 he went to Philadelphia and settled in business there. He was agent of the Hart ford Committee of Safety, and from the commencement of the war until its close, he and his brothers, Comfort and Captain Joshua, rendered valuable assistance to Washington and his Army, by fre quently furnishing necessary supplies when there was little hope of compensation, and particularly in joining with Robert Morris of Philadelphia and Mr. Livingston of New Jersey, in agreeing to furnish Washington with supplies for the year 1782, which nearly exhausted the fortunes of Robert Morris and the Sands brothers. No compensation was asked and each had a price set up~m his head by the British. Hon. Joshua Sands, son of John III & Elizabeth (Cornell) Sands, began his business life as a clerk in a country store .and came to New York in 1772 at the age of 15. In 1776 he was asked by Col. Trumbull of Conn. to accept a position in the Commissariat Department of the American Army, with the rank of Captain. He was active and faithful in the discharge of his duties, and after the disastrous battle of Long Island, Aug. 26. 1776, contributed material aid in facilitating the re treat of the Army. In 1776 with his brothers Comfort and Richardson, he tendered supplies to the Northern Army, which were accepted by Robert Morris, and the contract was faithfully carried out on their part. Owing to scarcity of means at the command of the Treasury Department, the contract on the part of the Government was not fulfilled, and they became great sufferers, although they were partially reimbursed after wards, by special Act of Congress. At the close of the war, he became a partner with his brother Comfort in mercantile pursuits and carried on a lucrative business until 1794 and both held high positions among the merchants of the day. Joshua was vestryman of Trinity Church, New York, 1784-1787. He first became identified with the City of Brooklyn by his purchase of the loyalist Rapalje Estate in 1784 and in 1786 removed to Brooklyn, and built upon his purchase a handsome frame mansion, fifty feet square, and furnished it with remarkable elegance for that day. This house situated on the north side of Front Street, one hundred feet east 80 fames Sands of Block Island of Dock Street (his coach house and stables, being on the opposite side of Front Street) was the largest in the village at that time, and was surrounded by a fine garden, extending to the river. About this time he added to the material interests of the town by establishing an ex tensive rope walk, for the manufacture of cordage and rigging, for which he imported the machinery and workmen from England. Mr. Sands rapidly became a man of mark in the community and repre sented his District in the State Senate from 1792 to 17~. He was a member of the Council of Appointment for the Southern District of New York in Jan. 1797, and was Judge of the County of Kings. The same year, by recommendation of Governor Jay, he was appointed Col lector of the Customs of the Port of New York, from which office he was removed by President Jefferson in 1801. He was President of the Merchants Bank from 1803-1805, and represented his District in Con gress to which he was again sent in 1825-1827. In 1824 he was chosen President of the Board of Trustees of Brooklyn, with which village he was always prominently connected in political, religious and social af fairs, and which he lived to see an incorporated and thriving city. He died universally respected, and it was truly and justly said of him that, "no man enjoyed more fully the esteem and the confidence of the in habitants of Brooklyn, without distinction of party, and all his duties, official and social, were performed with singular ability and fidelity. To an amiable disposition and great goodness of heart, he united a high toned spirit of independence, and indomitable tenacity of purpose, which never swerved, when persuaded that he was right." His wife had lived at New Cornwell, but after their marriage they settled at Rhinebeck in a house belonging to the Estate of John Rutsen. Joshua Sands was taxed on property in Kings Co., Year 1800-$150,000; Year 1805-$200,000. Extracts from "Brooklyn Village," by Weld. "Comfort & Joshua Sands owned a powder magazine near the nver.. " "In 1805 Joshua Sands sold to the city part of the property lying at the foot of Main St., for facilities at the 'New Ferry' landing." "In 1825 at Joshua Sands' suggestion a group met at Stevenson's tavern and selected a committee to draft a city-charter for submis sion to the legislature." fames Sands of Block Island 8r

Here they formed to receive General Lafayette who soon made his appearance, in an open barouche, drawn by four horses, accompanied by J. Sands Esq. President of the Board of Trustees of the village, and Com. I. Concerning Joseph Sands, son of Comfort Sands About the year 1796, when America was at war for a few weeks with the French Consulate, Joseph Sands was supercargo on an Ameri can vessel. This ship was captured by the French and Joseph taken prisoner. He was incarcerated in the Conciergerie. The Governor of the prison was an Austrian Major, Mathias Kampfel, whose daughter Maria Therese, an attractive girl of fifteen met Joseph, who promptly fell in love with her. After his release they were married in Paris in 1801 by Talleyrand, Bishop of Autun. A fellow prisoner of Joseph was James Van Derlyn, an artist. From the back of a portrait of Joseph Sands, is the following: "This crayon portrait of Joseph Sands, son of Comfort Sands, was drawn by James Van Derlyn in Paris in 1797, out of Grati tude, Joseph Sands having paid the artist's debts and procured his release from a French prison. Joseph Sands left this portrait to his daughter Mary, wife of Francis Griffin. She gave it to Joseph Sands, eldest son of her brother Ferdinand, and he, shortly before his death, gave it to his brother Charles Edwin Sands of Annan dale, Dutchess County, New York, with the express wish that it descend in the male line of Charles E. Sands' family." This portrait is now in the possession of Lettice Lee Sands (Mrs. Lee Delafield) daughter of the late Charles Edwin Sands.

They fill this office by deputy. In 25th Edward III, is Sir. Edward Ayscough Knt., of many holdings in Lincoln, and the last of them, a Sir. Edward who died early in the last century. Bart. M. P. In "County Families of the United Kingdom, 1865," it states, "The family of Ayscough is of ancient date in Lincolnshire, England and descended in the female line from the Plantagenets." The ancestry of Anne Braithwaite wife of Allan Ayscough, is of interest as she is descended from the Sandes of Furness & Esthwaite: Robert del Sandes. Surety for John del Sandes in 1401. His son was, John del Sandes of Furness, dfdt. in suit at Lancaster, 1401. His son, William Sandes of Furness Fells m. Margaret dau. & heir to William Rawson of Co. Their daughter, Anne Braithwaite m. Allan Ayscough of Midleton-on-Row, Co. Durham & Skewsby. [The above information is from "History of the Family of Sandys", by E. S. Sandys. Col. Sandys is a descendant of both iv. Christopher & vi. Anthony, above; as is also his cousin Col. G. 0. Sandys of Grayth waite Hall, who vouches for the marriage of Anne Sandes with Richard Braithwaite.] The parentage of Anne Braithwaite here given is from "Heraldic Visitation of Westmoreland, 1615" by Sir. Richard St. George. From Dugdale's Visitations of Yorkshire she is said to be the daughter of Thomas Brathwayt of Burneshead, Westmoreland, Esq. As Thomas was eldest brother of Gawen there is not much difference. Much of the Ayscough line is also from Dugdale.

Middagh or Meddach Anthony Meddach or Middagh belonged to a family originally from Flanders. Large numbers of Flemish refugees settled in lands where the provinces of Utrecht, Holland and Gelderland meet, after the year 1567 when the Spanish troops and the inquisition entered Flanders. In Heikop or Heycoop in the province of Utrecht were a colony of Flemish Anabaptists, or Mennonites. Aert Theunisen Meddach or Middagh, son of Anthony emigrated from Heycoop before 1657; he returned to the Netherlands and back in the ship "Beaver" in 1661. He married Breckje, daughter of Hans Hausee Hansen Bergen and his wife Sarah de Rapellea or Rapalje, born June 7. 1625, the first Christian daughter born in New Netherland, born at Fort Orange, now Albany. The parents of Sarah were Joris Jansen de Rapalje (from France in 1623) and Catalyntje Trico daugh ter of Joris Trico of Paris. Aert & Breckje Middagh both joined the Dutch Reformed Church of Brooklyn in 1664, where he resided and owned considerable property. 90 lames Sands of Block Island Gerret Aertsen Middagh, their 4th. son, took the oath of Allegiance in 1687. Holt According to Dugdale, Burke and other authorities one of the most prominent families of 1-his name were known as the Grizzlehurst of Lancaster, family. Of these the most notable was Sir. John Holt, born Dec. 1642; died 1709; Lord Chief Justice of the King's Bench in 1696. Sir. John died at Redgrave (former residence of Sir. Nicholas Bacon, Lord Keeper of the Seals to Queen Elizabeth) without issue, leaving a large estate to his heirs. This estate estimated at 13 millions sterling, long since passed through Chancery and lies accumulating in the Bank of England. Every few years the Bank advertizes for the "Holt heirs", this is because they expect heirs are living, for Sir. John said in his will, after naming all that it could pass to as heirs, executors & assigns in England," and in default of such heirs, to my own right heirs forever." The Crown cannot sequester it, for it says "forever" and there were known to be other heirs in other climes. The parents of Sir. John, were Sir. Thomas Holt, Sargant at Law, Knt. (April 16. 1686; died 1699.?) who married Susan, daughter of John Peacock Esq. of Cumner, County James Sands of Block Island

Information for the present generation has been given by many members of the family personally. Other a.uthorities are: "New York Genealogical & Biographical So- 94 fames Sands of Block Island ciety Record"; "Early Settlers of King's County" by Teunis G. Bergen; "Stile's History of Brooklyn"; "History of Block Island" by Livermore; Louis P. de Boer, and many others where scraps of information have been obtained. INDEX
