He was influential in two important associations; Sarekat Islam (SI-Islamic Union) and the Jang Islamieten Bond (JIB-YOUDg Muslim Union). Salim was barn ioto religious family and had a Western education. In 1915 when he joined the Sarent Islam it was al the height ofits popularity. Salim became so engrossed with its goals, that he devoted most ofbis life to il. As 5uch, he was soon able to obtain a • bigh-ranking position in it, and to help fannulate the movement's strategies. This thesis presents a number of Salim's positions on politics wbicb show bis disagreement and criticism of the Dutch Colonial policy and its effects, as well as bis advocacy of an Islamic approach to politics rather tban "socialism" as advocated by communist members of the Sr. Tbese views aimed at the paramount goal offreeing Indonesia from the Dutch colonialism. His views on ''Nationalism'' can be gleaned from bis exchange ofpolemics with Sukarno, later president of Indonesia. These polemies portrayed Salim as a nationalist who would not depart from a religious viewpoint. Finally t bis involvement with JIB was a continuation of bis desire to implement and promote Islamie values among Young Indonesian Muslims ofWestem education, whom he regarded as the future leaders ofthe country. •' i • RESUME AUTEUR : Erni Haryanti kahfi TITRE : Haji Agus Salim: Son rôle au sein des mouvements nationalistes en Indonésie au début du XXeme siécle DEPARTEMENT : Institut des Etudes Islamiques, Université McGill DIPLOME : Maîrise és Arts ---------------------- Haji Agus Salim 91884-1954) fut une personalité politique Indonésienne de l'époque nationaliste (1908-1945). n fut influent au sein de deux importantes associations: le Sarekat Islam (SI- Association Islamique) ainsi que le Jong Islamieten Bond (JIB- Association des Jeunes Musulmans). Salim naquit au sein d'une famille religieuse et reçut une une éducation occidentale. En 1915, il joignit le Sarekat Islam Alors au summun de sa popularité. Salim devint tellement épris des objectifs du Sarekat 1 Islam qu'il Yconsacrera la majeure partie de sa vie. Ainsi, il réussit àobtenir une position élevée à l'intérieur de l'organisation et collabora à formuler les stratégies du mouvement. ee mémoire présente un certain nombre de positions politiques monttant le désaccord de Salim ainsi que ses critiques des politiques coloniales Néerlandaises et ses effets de même que le plaidoyer de Salim pour une approche Islamique de la politique plutôt que l'approche socialiste telle que défendue par les membres communistes du SI. L'objectif ultime de ces points de vue était la libération de l'Indonésie du colonialisme Néerlandais. Les opinions de l'auteur concernant le nationalisme peuvent être recuillies des ses échanges polémiques avec Sukarno qui deviendra plus tard le Président de l'Indonésie. Ces polémiques montrent Salim comme étant un nationaliste elosant de se dissocier d'une position religieuse.     THE THORNY ROSE: THE AVOIDANCE OF PASSION IN MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE1 Harry Aveling One of the important shortcomings of modern Indonesian literature is the failure of its authors, on the whole young, well-educated men of the upper and more modernized strata of society, to deal in a convincing manner with the topic of adult heterosexual passion. This problem includes, and partly arises from, an inadequacy in portraying realistic female char­ acters which verges, at times, on something which might be considered sadism. What is involved here is not merely an inability to come to terms with Western concepts of romantic love, as explicated, for example, by the late C. S. Lewis in his book The Allegory of Love. The failure to depict adult heterosexual passion on the part of modern Indonesian authors also stands in strange contrast to the frankness and gusto with which the writers of the various branches of traditional Indonesian and Malay litera­ ture dealt with this topic. Indeed it stands in almost as great a contrast with the practice of Peninsular Malay literature today. In Javanese literature, as Pigeaud notes in his history, The Literature of Java, "Poems and tales describing erotic situations are very much in evidence . descriptions of this kind are to be found in almost every important mythic, epic, historical and romantic Javanese text."^ In Sundanese literature, there is not only the open violence of Sang Kuriang's incestuous desires towards his mother (who conceived him through inter­ course with a dog), and a further wide range of openly sexual, indeed often heavily Oedipal stories, but also the crude direct­ ness of the trickster Si-Kabajan tales, which so embarrassed one commentator, Dr.

Michael Laffan, History Department, Princeton University* Abstract This paper is a preliminary essay thinking about the concept of an Indonesian Islam. After considering the impact of the ideas of Geertz and Benda in shaping the current contours of what is assumed to fit within this category, and how their notions were built on the principle that the region was far more multivocal in the past than the present, it turns to consider whether, prior to the existance of Indonesia, there was ever such a notion as Jawi Islam and questions what modern Indonesians make of their own Islamic history and its impact on the making of their religious subjectivities. What about Indonesian Islam? Before I begin I would like to present you with three recent statements reflecting either directly or indirectly on assumptions about Indonesian Islam. The first is the response of an Australian academic to the situation in Aceh after the 2004 tsunami, the second and third have been made of late by Indonesian scholars The traditionalist Muslims of Aceh, with their mystical, Sufistic approach to life and faith, are a world away from the fundamentalist Islamists of Saudi Arabia and some other Arab states. The Acehnese have never been particularly open to the bigoted "reformism" of radical Islamist groups linked to Saudi Arabia. … Perhaps it is for this reason that aid for Aceh has been so slow coming from wealthy Arab nations such as Saudi Arabia.1 * This, admittedly in-house, piece presented at the UCLA Colloquium on Islam and Southeast Asia: Local, National and Transnational Studies on May 15, 2006, is very much a tentative first stab in the direction I am taking in my current project on the Making of Indonesian Islam.

The research method used the correspondence analysis and regression. The result of the research showed that the socioeconomic factors that influenced the debtors to top up personal loans at the confidence level of 5% (0.05) included Age, Marital Status, Dependent Number, Living Status, Education, Region, Job Type, Work Length, Salary, Debt Burdened Ratio (DBR), Credit Tenure, and Credit Limit, and only Gender had no effect on personal loan top up.

    Integral-Universal Education: Analysis of M. Natsir’s Thoughts on Islamic Education Kasmuri Selamat Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sultan Syarif Kasim, Riau, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract. This paper aimed at exploring M. Natsir's thoughts on Islamic education. Using a qualitative study with a historical approach, the writer found that M. Natsir was a rare figure. He was not only a scholar but also a thinker, a politician, and an educator. As an educator, he not only became a teacher, but also gave birth to various educational concepts known as an integral and universal education concept. He was an architect and an anti-dichotomous thinker of Islamic education. According to Natsir, Islam did not separate spiritual matters from worldly affairs. The spiritual aspect would be the basis of worldliness. The foregoing indicated that religious ethics emphasized by Islamic teachings must be the foundation of life. The conceptual basis of "educational modernism" with tauhid as its foundation demonstrated that he was a figure who really cared about Islamic education. Keywords: Integral-Universal Education, M. Natsir, Thought Introduction Minangkabau, West Sumatra, is one of the areas that cannot be underestimated because there are many great figures on the national and international scales in various fields of expertise from this area, such as scholars, politicians, and other strategic fields. Among these figures are Tuanku Imam Bonjol, Haji Agus Salim, Sutan Sjahrir, Hamka, M. Natsir, and others. Everybody knows these names and their works. These figures lived in the early 20th century when three ideological groups competed with one another to dominate in the struggle for independence.

In this paper, we provisionally describe the skull and compare it with •ôNH•ôHomo erectus•ôNS•ô.crania from Jawa and China. The new skull possesses a series of characteristic features of Asian •ôNH•ôH.erectus•ôNS•ô in overall size and shape of the vault, the expression of various ectocranial structures, and other details. The discovery of the skull was first announced in academic meetings in the Netherlands (Sartono et al, 1995), Indonesia (Sartono and Tyler, 1993), and America (Tyler et al., 1994).
