How Did America Inspire Indonesian Revolution? I Basis Susilo & Annisa Pratamasari Universitas Airlangga ABSTRACT This paper examines the American Revolution as an inspiration for Indonesia’s founding fathers to fight for their nation’s independence in 1945. This paper was sparked by the existence of the pamphlet ‘It’s 1776 in Indonesia’ published in 1948 in the United States which presupposes the link between Indonesian Revolution and the American Revolution. The basic assumption of this paper is that Indonesian founding fathers were inspired by the experiences of other nations, including the Americans who abolished the British colonization of 13 colonies in North American continent in the eigthenth century. American inspiration on the struggle for Indonesian independence was examined from the spoken dan written words of three Indonesian founding fathers: Achmad Soekarno, Mohamad Hatta, and Soetan Sjahrir. This examination produced two findings. First, the two Indonesian founding fathers were inspired by the United States in different capacities. Compared to Hatta and Sjahrir, Soekarno referred and mentioned the United States more frequent. Second, compared to the inspirations from other nations, American inspiration for the three figures was not so strong. This was because the liberal democratic system and the American-chosen capitalist system were not the best alternative for Soekarno, Hatta, and Sjahrir. Therefore, the massive exposition of the 1776 Revolution in 1948 was more of a tactic on the Indonesian struggle to achieve its national objectives at that time, as it considered the United States as the most decisive international post-World War II political arena. Perjuangan yang dianggap suatu pemberontakan timbul akibat kekecewaan rakyat Aceh terhadap Pemerintah Pusat akibat dari janji-janji semu yang di ucapkan oleh Soekarno yang menjabat Presiden saat itu tidak kunjung terwujud. Rakyat Aceh yang sebelumnya berjuang mempertahankan kedaulatan RI dengan seluruh jiwa raganya, sangat geram karena salah satu keinginan untuk mendirikan negara yang berlandaskan Syariat Islam tidak kunjung tercapai, dan berujung pada pemberontakan rakyat Aceh dalam Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia (NKRI). Pasca kemerdekaan, konflik terjadi antar kedua belah pihak yaitu pemerintah pusat dan rakyat aceh dibawah pimpinan Daud Beureueh bertikai mempertahankan ideologinya untuk dijadikan sebuah landasan suatu negara. Sesuatu hal yang sangat menarik, dan dalam kajian ini penulis ingin mengetahui bagaimana latar belakang pemberontakan serta usaha dan upaya yang dilakukan pihak Daud Beureueh dalam memperjuangkan dan mempertahankan ideologi Islam yang menjadi cita-cita rakyat Aceh. i KATA PENGANTAR Alhamdulilahi robbi al‟alamin, segala puja dan puji syukur ke hadirat Allah SWT yang telah memberikan rahmat dan inayah-Nya kepada penulis, sehingga penulis dapat menyelesaikan penulisan skripsi ini sebagaimana mestinya. -

A lot of activities that have been carried out by Muhammadiyah as a socio- religious movement based on tauhid ( aqidah Islamiyah) through Islamic purification (tajrid) and in the other sides through modernity (tajdid) that’s puts forward enjoining whats is right and forbidding whats is wrong (amar ma’ruf nahi mungkar) as a theological bases (teologi al-ma’un). Have a lot of evidences shown in Muhammadiyah socio- religious movement in Indonesia, but the biggest challages is the ability to maintain the existence of and answered a range of challenges that are local and global (relations between islam and democration), pluralism, human rights and the marginals. Through tajdid Muhammadiyah has proven ability in respond of Islamic problems in Indonesia since before the independence of up to the twenty-first century.in a way to do interpretation of his base theologious through a shift paradigm in theologies and socio- religious movement (Thomas Kuhn). In fact, Muhammadiyah move forward with transformation of theological bases from theocentris to antrophocentris (Hasan Hanafi).Thus various issues on religious movement,political like nation-state wich is local or global had answered by Muhammadiyah with his theological bases and the charity efforts like educations, hospitals and the orphanage. -

AKAL DAN WAHYU DALAM PEMIKIRAN M. QURAISH SHIHAB Yuhaswita* Abstract Reason according to M. Quraish Shihab sense is the thinking power contained in man and is a manipation of the human soul. Reason is not understood materially but reason is understood in the abstract so that sense is interpreted a thinking power contained in the human soul, with this power man is able to gain knowledge and be able to distinguish between good and evil. Revelation according to M. Quraish Shihab, is the delivery of God’s Word to His chosen people to be passed on to human beings to be the guidance of life. God’s revelation contains issues of aqidah, law, morals, and history. Furthermore, M. Quraish Shihab reveals that human reason is very limited in understanding the content of Allah’s revelation, because in Allah’s revelation there are things unseen like doomsday problems, death and so forth. Mohammad Hatta is one of the founders of the nation, as well as a thinker who controls various Western disciplines, but still adheres to Indonesian values. His thoughts on democracy include popular democracy and economic democracy with the principle of popular sovereignty. The results of this study are that all elements of the nation need to actualize the thinking of Mohammad Hatta trying to apply the concept of Democratic Democracy and Economic Democracy by re-learning his concept of thought and making policies that enable Mohammad Hatta's democratic concept to be implemented. Keywords: People's Sovereignty, Popular Democracy, Economic Democracy. 1 Introduction Mohammad Hatta or familiarly called Bung Hatta was one of the thinkers who became the founding father of the Indonesian nation. Bung Hatta, the first hero of the Indonesian Proclamator and Deputy President, has laid the foundations of nation and state through struggle and thought enshrined in the form of written works. Bung Hatta had been educated in the Netherlands but because Nationalism and his understanding of Indonesia made his work very feasible to study theoretically. Bung Hatta devoted his thoughts by writing various books and writing columns in various newspapers both at home and abroad. It has been known together that Bung Hatta's work was so diverse, his thinking about nationalism, Hatta implemented the idea of nationalism that had arisen since school through his politics of movement and leadership in the movement organization at the Indonesian Association and Indonesian National Education. -

19 BAB II BIOGRAFI DAN PEMIKIRAN M. NATSIR A. Riwayat Hidup M. Natsir Mohammad Natsir dilahirkan pada hari Jum’at tanggal 17 Jumadil Akhir 1326 H. yang bertepatan dengan tanggal 17 Juli 1908 M. di kampung Jembatan, Berukir Alahan Panjang yang termasuk wilayah Kecamatan Lembah Gumanti, Kabupaten Solok, Provinsi Sumatra Barat. Ayahnya bernama Idris Sutan Saripado sebagai seorang juru tulis kontrolir di Maninjau yang kemudian menjadi sipir atau penjaga tahanan di Bekeru Sulawesi Selatan. Sedangkan Ibunya bernama Khadijah sebagai keturunan Chaniago.1 Mohammad Natsir lahir dari rahim Ibunya seorang muslimah yang taat, begitu pula, Ayahnya seorang muslim yang taat terhadap aturan agama. Sebagaimana masyarakat Minang lainnya, maka wajar. M. Natsir terlihat masa kanak-kanak yang gemar mengaji dan menuntut ilmu agama, baik pada waktu pagi, siang, maupun sore harinya. M. Natsir mempunyai tiga saudara, yaitu Yukiman, Rubiah, dan Yohanusun. Di tempat kelahiranya itu, ia hidup bersama saudaranya dan kedua orang tuanya. Logemann published an article entitled ‘Nieuwe gegevens over het ontstaan van de Indonesische grondwet van 1945’ (New data on the creation of the Indonesian Constitution of 1945).1 Logemann’s analysis, presented 48 years ago, needs revisiting since it was based upon a single work compiled by Muhammad Yamin (1903-1962), Naskah persiapan Undang-undang Dasar 1945 (Documents for the preparation of the 1945 Constitution).2 Yamin’s work was purportedly an edition of the debates conducted by the Badan Penyelidik Usaha Persiapan Kemerdekaan (BPUPK, Committee to Investigate Preparations for Independence)3 between 29 May and 17 July 1945, and by the 1 Research for this article was assisted by funding from the Australian Research Council’s Dis- covery Grant Program. ARTICLE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IMPLICATIONS OF SHARIA IMPLEMENTATION IN ACEH, INDONESIA ASMA T. UDDIN* INTRODUCTION On Monday, September 14, 2009, the provincial legislature in Aceh, Indonesia passed Sharia regulations imposing stringent criminal punish- ments for various sexual offenses, such as adultery and fornication.1 Sharia, literally meaning “way to a watering place,” is a set of divine principles that regulate a Muslim’s relationship with God and man by providing social, moral, religious, and legal guidance. It is implemented through fiqh, or Is- lamic jurisprudence, which is the science of interpreting religious texts in order to deduce legal rulings. The Acehnese Sharia regulations are the latest manifestations of a process of formal implementation of Sharia that began in 2002 in Aceh.2 Given the gravity of the associated punishments, the reg- ulations have caught national and international attention, with human rights activists across the world decrying the severity of the corporal punishments imposed by the regulations. Much less frequently scrutinized are the regula- tions’ implications for other human rights—such as religious freedom. This paper analyzes these regulations’ religious freedom implications for both Muslims and non-Muslims. -

Integral-Universal Education: Analysis of M. Natsir’s Thoughts on Islamic Education Kasmuri Selamat Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Sultan Syarif Kasim, Riau, Indonesia [email protected] Abstract. This paper aimed at exploring M. Natsir's thoughts on Islamic education. Using a qualitative study with a historical approach, the writer found that M. Natsir was a rare figure. He was not only a scholar but also a thinker, a politician, and an educator. As an educator, he not only became a teacher, but also gave birth to various educational concepts known as an integral and universal education concept. He was an architect and an anti-dichotomous thinker of Islamic education. According to Natsir, Islam did not separate spiritual matters from worldly affairs. The spiritual aspect would be the basis of worldliness. The foregoing indicated that religious ethics emphasized by Islamic teachings must be the foundation of life. The conceptual basis of "educational modernism" with tauhid as its foundation demonstrated that he was a figure who really cared about Islamic education. Keywords: Integral-Universal Education, M. Natsir, Thought Introduction Minangkabau, West Sumatra, is one of the areas that cannot be underestimated because there are many great figures on the national and international scales in various fields of expertise from this area, such as scholars, politicians, and other strategic fields. Among these figures are Tuanku Imam Bonjol, Haji Agus Salim, Sutan Sjahrir, Hamka, M. Natsir, and others. Everybody knows these names and their works. These figures lived in the early 20th century when three ideological groups competed with one another to dominate in the struggle for independence. -
