Stockholm’s Metro network is to have almost twenty kilometres of new track added to it. It is also to get eleven new stations. All of this is so that distances become shorter as Stockholm becomes bigger! In addition, the capacity of the existing Högdalen depot is being expanded in order to serve both the Green line and the Blue line. We are now looking for contractors who would like to join us in building tomorrow’s Metro. STOCKHOLM IS GROWING . It is estimated that the county will have 2.6 million inhabitants by 2025. To serve this growth, major investment in the expansion of public transport is planned. In January 2014, the Stockholm Agreement was signed by: the Municipalities of Järfälla, Nacka and Solna; the City of Stockholm; the Swedish State; and Stockholm County Council. It covers: building a completely new line from Oden- plan to Arenastaden; extending the Blue line to Nacka and Söderort; and expanding the Blue line from Akalla to Barkarby station. The Agreement also includes an undertaking by the municipalities to build 82,000 homes served by the new Metro. Stockholm County Council’s Metro Expansion Administration is responsi- ble for ensuring that the Metro is built. This includes the expansion of the existing depot at Högdalen. In other words, the entire investment has been both decided and financed. Construction start for most of the projects is sched- uled for 2018. The planning of tunnels, entrances and Mårten Frumerie, head of the depot capacity is in full swing. MASTER OF SCIENCE THESIS STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN 2016 Operation of the Expanded Blue Metro Line in Stockholm SOUMELA PEFTITSI KTH ROYAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY SCHOOL OF ARCHITECTURE AND THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT TSC-MT 16-009 Operation of the Expanded Blue Metro Line in Stockholm Soumela Peftitsi Master thesis June 2016 Department of Transport Science KTH Railway Group KTH Royal Institute of Technology Abstract Since the population growth of Stockholm Region is rapid, leading to larger demand on Public Transport and especially metro, four Municipalities of the Region have agreed on the expansion of the metro network. Blue metro line will be extended to Nacka and Hags¨atrain the south and Barkarby in the north of the Swedish capital. The new railway line connections have been already planned, while the operation of the expanded line is analyzed in the current thesis. Taking the expected increase of passenger volumes and the operation of the current Blue line into account and following the safety restrictions, two alternative regu- lar timetables of the expanded Blue line, limited to the morning rush service on a working weekday, have been constructed. The operation at stations of low expected passenger volume on the train is evaluated concerning the satisfaction of the oper- ator. The first alternative metro operation with traffic every 4 minutes during the rush hour is concluded to be less efficient than the second alternative with 5 minutes headway, as 21 % larger amount of rolling stock is needed and more seats are not occupied. Finally, in order to achieve higher operational efficiency at the low-demanded sta- tions, a third Blue line operation, that is based on the second alternative and it includes short services, operating on a part of the line and not on the full-length of it, has been proposed.

Thesis / Design Questions Thesis / Design Questions My thesis takes its departure in the relationship between pattern and geometry. I intend to investigate continuous and discontinuous patterns and how they correlate and don’t correlate to the geometry of a continuous surface modeled in a 3d software. Numerous of designs and models have investigated the relation between patterns and continuous surfaces in contoured models milled in a cnc-mill. One example is the models of Bernard Cache, who in the 1980s was a pio- neer in cnc-milling. A more recent example is Hella Jongerius Turtle Table (Natura Design Magistra) from 2009, in which she also use contoured layers of colored resin. In both examples, patterns is a result of sheets of wood (and resin, in Jongerius Turtle Table) stacked and glued together and then subtracted by a cnc-mill after a digital surface model. Pattern is a direct effect of geom- etry. Pattern describe the topography of the surface geometry.

  • The Subway Station the Subway System and the Subway Station Is An
The subway station Erik Aspengren, Architecture and Universal Design in the designer´s eye, Teacher: Jonas Andersson The subway system and the subway station is an environment with very high demands regarding usability, accessibility, sustainability and social inclusion. It is from a democratic point of view very important that this system works giving everyone access to the city and connect different parts of it. The subway station could easily be a claustrophobic and stressful environment for the human being, located in the underground with no sense of daylight. In a physical way the subway station have to deal with the complicated situation of bringing a lot of people from street level into to the underground and into a train. The station and subway system should also be able to work for all kinds of people inhabitants of the city as well as tourists and visitors, the users also have different ages, cultural backgrounds, and different kinds of disabilities. The subway station is located underground an environment that could be seen as hostile for the human, this creates extra high demands regarding sensory aspects. The materials have to be strong and durable as well as varied and relate to the human scale. The subway stations in Stockholm are often of a high quality, regarding art and architecture and are called “The longest art exhibition in the world”. In this work I want to experience and investigate the environment in the subway system with emphasis on the station. The central questions are: what kind of spatial elements bring sensory qualities to this environ- ment, and how is it made accessible in a physical way? The work is mainly based on photographs taken dur- ing travelling on the red and green line a weekday.

Signal Modernization at Stockholm Metro Jesper Carlström, PhD VP Engineering Prover Technology Krukmakargatan 21 SE-118 51 Stockholm [email protected] Number of words: 2118 ABSTRACT Stockholm Metro has a diverse and complex network with light rail, suburban rail and subway systems. Its signaling systems are a mix of computerized and relay-based interlockings, with modern, centralized traffic management systems. Maintaining and upgrading these systems to the standards of a modern mass transit facing ever increasing passenger numbers is challenging, from a cost and resource perspective as well as from a safety perspective. In order to address this, Stockholm Metro has deployed modern Signal Design Automation processes covering both safety verification and development of interlocking application software. In this paper we will take a closer look at two distinct projects of Stockholm Metro; the extension of one of the subway lines using legacy Union Switch & Signal relay-based interlocking and the capacity increase project on a suburban rail line utilizing modern computerized interlockings. The relay-based interlockings are designed using traditional methods but with automatic checks of schematics, and safety is verified with automated formal verification. The computerized interlockings are generated, tested and verified with a design automation process based on generic and formalized requirement specifications. INTRODUCTION Stockholm Metro (SL), or Stockholm Public Transport as they are officially called in English, has metro, suburban rail and light rail, as well as buses and a few boats. Being a relatively small player who wanted to cut costs by inviting signaling suppliers from the whole world, Stockholm Metro ended up with a mixture of signaling principles.
