Amen, est ainsi présenté sur la quatrième de couverture du DVD1: « Un officier SS et un jésuite refusent de dire ‘AMEN’ à l’horreur ». Allocine, en propose le résumé suivant : « Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, Kurt Gerstein, un officier SS allemand, épaulé par un jeune jésuite, Ricardo Fontana, tente d'informer le Pape Pie XII et les Alliés du génocide des Juifs organisé par les nazis dans les camps de concentration »2. Le film, produit par Claude Berri, a coûté cher. Il a été tourné en partie en Hongrie et en langue anglaise par des acteurs non locuteurs natifs de l’anglais. Le film se revendique aussi bien, de la part de Grumberg, co-scénariste, que de Costa Gavras comme faisant partie du « cinéma spectaculaire »3. « Il ne faut pas oublier que le cinéma, c’est du spectacle. Understanding the Recent Phenomena of Holocaust Remembrance in the Form of National Holocaust Museums and Memorials in Belgium, France, and Germany Hannah Elizabeth Garza Universiteit van Amsterdam Graduate School of Humanities A thesis submitted for the degree of Masters in Holocaust and Genocide Studies Spring 2017 !1 Abstract This thesis will focus on national Holocaust museums and memorials in Europe, in specific regards to the national Holocaust museums of Belgium and France, and the national Holocaust memorial of Germany. This dissertation will begin with a brief overview of the scholars used within each chapter, along with a discussion on the development of national Holocaust museums in Europe in the introduction chapter. Following the introduction, the first chapter will discuss the Kazerne Dossin Memorial Museum in Mechelen, Belgium. Chapter two will then cover the Mémorial de la Shoah in Paris, France. Finally, chapter three will then focus on the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe in conjunction with its underground information center in Berlin, Germany. This thesis will endeavor to explore the themes represented in each museum in relation to German compliance, and the role of the bystanders from each Nation. The goal is to understand how each of these national institutions discussed within the text, portray their involvement in the events of the Holocaust and Second World War by way of State compliance and the actions of their bystanders. Kevin Madigan Harvard Divinity School Plenary presentation at the Annual Meeting of the Council of Centers on Christian-Jewish Relations November 1, 2009, Florida State University, Boca Raton, Florida Given my reflections in this presentation, it is perhaps appropriate to begin with a confession. What I have written on the subject of the papacy and the Shoah in the past was marked by a confidence and even self-righteousness that I now find embarrassing and even appalling. (Incidentally, this observation about self-righteousness would apply all the more, I am afraid, to those defenders of the wartime pope.) In any case, I will try and smother those unfortunate qualities in my presentation. Let me hasten to underline that, by and large, I do not wish to retract conclusions I have reached, which, in preparation for this presentation, have not essentially changed. But I have come to perceive much more clearly the need for humility in rendering judgment, even harsh judgment, on the Catholic actors, especially the leading Catholic actors of the period. As José Sanchez, with whose conclusions in his book on understanding the controversy surrounding the wartime pope I otherwise largely disagree, has rightly pointed out, “it is easy to second guess after the events.”1 This somewhat uninflected observation means, I take it, that, in the case of the Holy See and the Holocaust, the calculus of whether to speak or to act was reached in the cauldron of a savage world war, wrought in the matrix of competing interests and complicated by uncertainty as to whether acting or speaking would result in relief for or reprisal. -

Journeys into Memory: Romani Identity and the Holocaust in Autobiographical Writing by German and Austrian Romanies Marianne C. Zwicker Doctor of Philosophy University of Edinburgh 2009 Abstract This PhD thesis examines the ‘working through’ of traumatic memories of the Holocaust and representations of Romani cultural identity in autobiographical writing by Romanies in Ger- many and Austria. In writing their memories in German, these Romani writers ended the ‘muteness’ previously surrounding their own experiences of persecution in the Third Reich and demanded an end to the official silence regarding the Romani Holocaust in their home countries. The thesis aims to explore how the writing of these narratives works to create a space for Romani memories within German language written tradition and to assert a more positive Romani identity and space for this identity in their homelands. -

As an alternative to the prevailing literature, which has approached this form of musical theater mostly through broad surveys and detailed studies of a handful of well‐known masterpieces, my dissertation presents a montage of loosely connected, previously unconsidered case studies. Each chapter examines one or two highly significant, but radically unfamiliar, moments in the history of operetta during Austria’s five successive political eras in the first half of the twentieth century. Exploring operetta’s importance for the image of Vienna, these vignettes aim to supply new glimpses not only of a seemingly obsolete art form but also of the urban and cultural life of which it was a part. Both monumental events reshaped Jewish history and transformed Jewish memory; thus, each in their own way required inclusion in the Jewish calendar. My focus will be on Yom Hashoah v’Hagevurah, Holocaust and Heroism Days as it is formally known in Israel where it was first established by a resolution of the Knesset. We shall return to the title shortly. Commemoration of what we now call the Shoah, the Holocaust, but what was then called by the Jews who experienced it “the Churban,” began even during the war and most certainly took on a communal character immediately after the war ended in the Displaced Persons (DP) camps of Europe as the remnant that survived, the Shearit Hapleitah used even their first months of freedom to begin coming to terms with what had happened. Though it was clear at that point that the Churban would be commemorated, it was unclear when and according to whose calendar. That is to say, should the commemoration be observed in secular time or Jewish sacred time? The massacre of European Jewry was something that happened day by day for three years and ten months. -
