BSUAA 1999-2000 Annual Report, Executive Message BSUAA 1999-2000 Annual Report, Executive Message Annual Report Thank you for your interest in, and continued involvement with, the Ball State University Alumni Executive Message Association. On the following pages we will publicly report the past year's achievements and Organizational accomplishments of the BSUAA. Flow Chart I am fortunate to serve as executive director of the Alumni Leadership Ball State University Alumni Association and as an administrative official for our 113,922 alumni. The Alumni academic year 1999-2000 was one of expanded Ambassadors activity, reconnection, and technology advancement for the BSUAA. Alumni Contacts Mary Link, Connersville, and Tony Schneider, Indianapolis, led your Alumni Staff governing body, the Alumni Council, during the past fiscal year. They and the university administration should be congratulated for Alumni Programs providing the vision to create a valuable and vibrant Alumni Association. Alumni Awards The most visible new project for the past year was the establishment of CART (Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team), a group of alumni Alumni Reunions from around the country who volunteer to assist the BSUAA to identify, recruit, and retain quality students for Ball State University. Professional and Currently we have 44 CART members in 11 states and have Constituent awarded ten $500 scholarships to successfully recruited students. Societies Traditional activities: reunions, Alumni College Weekend, alumni golf Financial Summary outings, Homecoming, and the production of the Ball State Alumnus were very successful and provided excellent opportunities for Past Activities individuals to reconnect with the campus and other alumni. Our Calendar service programs: Cardinal Alumni Retail Discount (CARD), alumni insurance programs, and First USA affinity credit card continued to expand and add benefit for individual alumni. Finally, the revamping of our BSUAA Web site and its increased usage by our alumni are both rewarding and predictive of the future. With the close of academic year 2000, University President John E. Worthen retired after 16 successful years of leadership. The BSUAA benefited greatly during his tenure. A few examples were the opening of the Alumni Center, the addition of 52,839 new alumni (this represents 46.4% of all Ball State alumni), and the reorganization of the BSUAA in 1988. Through his leadership, support, and tolerance, the BSUAA has a structure for the future, has become one of the best in the Mid-American Conference, and is one of the top-50 alumni associations in the country. It has been my privilege to participate in this extremely rewarding year, the productive results of which have come from countless hours of effort by our dedicated alumni volunteers and staff. Their contributions have guided us through another successful year of serving a diverse alumni population. THANK YOU! Your investment is both appreciated and greatly respected. One hundred and twenty-five years ago, this institution (then known as Indiana Asbury University) engaged Elizabeth Adelaide Clark to offer instruction in the elements of drawing, in crayon, water T color and oil painting. After a century and more of teaching by distinguished scholars and creative artists, DePauw now has its first building specifically designed for this academic sphere. Gone are the days of adapted buildings, of advanced students doing their studio work in neighborhood houses, and faculty members having to rent or build their own studios. One of the most modern facilities ever created for the teaching and study of art, the Peeler Center offers adequate spaces for introductory classes, advanced student projects and faculty studios. The magnificence of the Peeler Art Center is due, in large part, to the careful design and development led by architect Carlos Jiménez. A faculty member at Rice University, Jiménez carefully considered the programmatic needs and wishful thinking of the faculty members of the Art Department.

Great Jobs: Workplace Engagement Workplace engagement means employees are intellectually and emotionally connected with their organizations and workgroups because they are able to do what they’re best at, they like what they do and they have someone who cares about their development at work. People who are engaged at work are more involved in and enthusiastic about their work. Given the importance of establishing a course for students to pursue fulfilling and enriching careers, higher education institutions must examine these outcomes critically. Gallup’s research also demonstrates that workplace engagement is an important driver of overall well-being, reinforcing the significance of these findings. Great Lives: Well-Being Well-being is not only about being happy or wealthy. It is about the interaction and interdependency between many aspects of life such as finding fulfillment in daily work and interactions, having strong social relationships and access to the resources people need, feeling financially secure, being physically healthy and taking part in a true community. Gallup and Healthways developed the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being 5 View to measure these important aspects. Great Experiences: Alumni Attachment The Gallup-Purdue Index uncovers which college experiences and perceptions are related to greater gains in the workplace and in well-being. It measures graduates’ current emotional attachment to their alma mater by adapting Gallup’s research on customer engagement to assess graduates’ perceptions of their colleges — retrospectively, with regard to their undergraduate experiences, as well as their views as current alumni.
