BSUAA 1999-2000 Annual Report, Executive Message

Annual Report Thank you for your interest in, and continued involvement with, the Ball State Alumni Executive Message Association. On the following pages we will publicly report the past year's achievements and Organizational accomplishments of the BSUAA. Flow Chart I am fortunate to serve as executive director of the Alumni Leadership Alumni Association and as an administrative official for our 113,922 alumni. The Alumni academic year 1999-2000 was one of expanded Ambassadors activity, reconnection, and technology advancement for the BSUAA. Alumni Contacts Mary Link, Connersville, and Tony Schneider, , led your Alumni Staff governing body, the Alumni Council, during the past fiscal year. They and the university administration should be congratulated for Alumni Programs providing the vision to create a valuable and vibrant Alumni Association. Alumni Awards The most visible new project for the past year was the establishment of CART (Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team), a group of alumni Alumni Reunions from around the country who volunteer to assist the BSUAA to identify, recruit, and retain quality students for Ball State University. Professional and Currently we have 44 CART members in 11 states and have Constituent awarded ten $500 scholarships to successfully recruited students. Societies Traditional activities: reunions, Alumni Weekend, alumni golf Financial Summary outings, Homecoming, and the production of the Ball State Alumnus were very successful and provided excellent opportunities for Past Activities individuals to reconnect with the campus and other alumni. Our Calendar service programs: Cardinal Alumni Retail Discount (CARD), alumni insurance programs, and First USA affinity credit card continued to expand and add benefit for individual alumni. Finally, the revamping of our BSUAA Web site and its increased usage by our alumni are both rewarding and predictive of the future. With the close of academic year 2000, University President John E. Worthen retired after 16 successful years of leadership. The BSUAA benefited greatly during his tenure. A few examples were the opening of the Alumni Center, the addition of 52,839 new alumni (this represents 46.4% of all Ball State alumni), and the reorganization of the BSUAA in 1988. Through his leadership, support, and tolerance, the BSUAA has a structure for the future, has become one of the best in the Mid-American Conference, and is one of the top-50 alumni associations in the country. It has been my privilege to participate in this extremely rewarding year, the productive results of which have come from countless hours of effort by our dedicated alumni volunteers and staff. Their contributions have guided us through another successful year of serving a diverse alumni population. THANK YOU! Your investment is both appreciated and greatly respected. ADMISSIONS RECRUITMENT

Prospective Student Receptions Receptions for prospective students were held in Indiana, Chicago, and Cincinnati by Ball State's Office of Admissions with the assistance of alumni. Alumni volunteers staffed registration tables and served as welcoming ambassadors for the university. A total of 47 alumni volunteers worked at the receptions. A list of last year's admissions receptions is included in the past activities section of this report.

Alumni/Admissions Partnership The Cardinal Alumni Recruitment Team (CART) is a network of alumni volunteers who assist Ball State University with student recruitment. Formed in 1999 by the Alumni Association and the Office of Admissions, the goal of the CART program is to identify, recruit, and retain quality students for Ball State University. CART members were involved during the fiscal year 1999-2000 in various capacities during the admission process. CART members worked to increase the quality of students enrolling in Ball State University, enhanced students' access to Ball State University from their local communities, and extended the University's geographic reach to allow greater diversity and selectivity of students. In 1999-2000, CART members represented Ball State at area college fairs, contacted and referred prospective students, and served as ambassadors at admissions receptions. A bus trip in which CART members brought 133 high school students from throughout Indiana and Chicago to campus was held on January 8. Prospective students were served lunch, received admissions and financial aid information, met with counselors, and attended a Ball State basketball game. Founding members of CART were: Illinois - Michael Flack, Susan J. Taylor, and Keith Robinson; Indiana - Gayle Hartleroad, Michael Hawley, Jenell Joiner, Vicki Mauro, Andrea McDonald, Charmaine Powell, Foster Stephens, and Constance Winfrey; Kansas - Laurie Fallon, and John and Judith Yount; Kentucky - Bill Clark, Virginia Hatfield, Elinore Jeffcoat, Stephen Schnacke, Amy Shaper, David Voglund, Chad and Tamara Waggoner, and Jaeson Welch; Missouri - James Bryan, Andrew and Tara Pickard, and Carolyn Steinfeldt; New York - Richard Poppa and Krishna Thomas; Ohio - Wendy Greeley, Kerry Hendel, Michael and Patrycja Thomas, and Jewell Weiss; Pennsylvania - Cynthia Gilfoyle; Texas - Ed McGuire; Virginia - Erin Kennedy; and Wisconsin - Christine Finiak. The CART scholarship, worth $500 each, was available to incoming freshmen. The following students received CART scholarships for the 1999-2000 academic year: Elizabeth G. Davis, R. Nelson Snider High School, Fort Wayne; Joey R. Duncan, Avon High School, Avon; Justin M. Pose, South Side High School, Fort Wayne; Lorinda M. Sliger, Elkhart Memorial High School, Elkhart; Carinne S. Uslar, South Side High School, Fort Wayne; and Tamara L. Williams, Bluffton High School, Bluffton.

Alumni Legacy Scholarship The Alumni Association Legacy Scholarship is offered to show appreciation to alumni who contributed to the enrichment and growth of Ball State University through active membership in the Alumni Association. The scholarship is a one-time, nonrenewable award that assists entering freshmen or currently enrolled students who are children or grandchildren of alumni. Legacy Scholarships are awarded annually by the Alumni Council, the governing body of the Ball State University Alumni Association. Forty scholarships for $1,500 each were awarded for the 1999-2000 academic year. For a listing of the 1999 recipients, their parents and/or grandparents, and hometowns, see the Awards and Scholarships section of this report.

The Cardinal Legacy Award was instituted in 1999 to help recruit and retain well-prepared, out-of-state students. Depending on what course of study is chosen, awards may be renewed for up to eight or ten semesters. Children and grandchildren of Ball State alumni are eligible for the award, which provides a tuition waiver of $2,500 per academic year. Students must maintain a 2.0 cumulative GPA or higher to remain eligible. Eleven students received the Cardinal Legacy Award for the 1999-2000 academic year.

ALUMNI ACTIVITIES

Indiana Alumni Clubs Alumni Clubs serve geographic areas where there are significant numbers of Ball State alumni. Club volunteers organized educational and social activities for alumni and university friends. These activities helped to continue and develop new relationships that were of benefit to alumni, university friends, and Ball State. The activities organized by club boards included golf and dinner outings, continuing professional educational seminars, receptions and dinners for university representatives, social functions such as holiday bus shopping trips, family zoo outings, picnic and baseball games, casino nights, TGIFs, hockey games and pre-athletic events. Alumni Club members also worked with the Office of Admissions at annual receptions for prospective students. Alumni clubs worked to improve existing activities and looked for additional ways to involve alumni and friends through new events. The Northeastern Indiana Alumni Club golf and dinner outing continued to be the best attended of all the summer golf outings. Greater Indianapolis area club member, Steph Meyers, '91MA92, organized an outing to watch the Indianapolis Ice at Conseco Fieldhouse that was voted the best new club activity for 1999-2000. The Michiana Alumni Club organized a holiday bus shopping trip to the Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, Illinois. http://www.bsu.edu/web/alumni/annual_report/2000/programs.html (5 of 11) [07/08/2003 1:22:07 PM] BSUAA 1999-2000 Annual Report, Alumni Programs The focus of alumni career programs remained centered around the use of technology. Career fairs were also an integral part of alumni career services.

The Career Alumni Network (C.A.N.) is a networking program for those in need of career guidance and continues to be available as an online service and via hard copy, with over 370 alumni participants. A career consultant list is available online and can be searched by occupation, company name, and geographic location for alumni to contact volunteers directly for assistance.

The Indiana Jobs Marketplace, an online program that provides links to various Indiana company Web sites with information technology job postings, remains an important part of alumni career resources. Visitors to the site utilize the marketplace in order to narrow their search for employment to those Indiana companies specifically in need of information technology professionals. Companies linked from the site included: Bell Tech.logix; BitWise Solutions, Inc.; DataShare; Indiana Information Technology Association (INITA); Major Hospital; Ontario Systems Corporation; Sherry Laboratories; Tivoli; USA Group; and Vector Technologies, Inc.

The number of annual career fairs, coordinated by the Ball State University Career Center and sponsored by the Alumni Association, increased and were open to both students and alumni. Career Information Day, held on September 15, 1999 in University Arena, provided an opportunity to nearly 650 students to meet with employers and graduate school representatives who were on hand to discuss employment, internships, and graduate programs. Out of 189 companies present, 85 alumni were there recruiting students for possible employment. A new career fair, Technology in Careers Day, took place on October 28, 1999 in the Student Center. Special interest group meetings were conducted with business representatives serving as panelists for question and answer sessions with interested students. Topics covered included business, design and the arts, education, health and medical, industry and manufacturing, information systems and technology, physical sciences, publishing, and telecommunications. Approximately 250 students took advantage of the opportunity to meet with 30 business representatives, about half of who were alumni. Cardinal Job Fair took place on March 22, 2000 in University Arena. Sixty-one alumni from more than 150 employers greeted approximately 1,400 students interested in full-time professional employment, summer employment, internships, and cooperative education opportunities. On May 3-4, 2000, University Arena was again the site of a career function, Teacher Fair. Ninety-six school corporations with approximately 40 alumni serving as recruiters were on hand from across Indiana and throughout the country to provide education majors with the opportunity to collect information, distribute resumes, and conduct interviews. Four hundred forty-nine students participated in the two-day event.

COLLEGIATE LICENSE PLATE The Cardinal Pride license plate, issued by the Alumni Association and the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles, issued 2,655 plates in 1999.

Interested alumni, parents, students, and friends of the university obtained a recognition plate for their passenger cars, recreational vehicles, and trucks weighing less than 11,000 pounds. The annual fee was $25 in addition to standard registration fees. The Collegiate License Plate program was initiated in 1992.

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY The development and management of the BSUAA Web site remained a top priority in order to keep up with the popularity of the Internet and the demand for online services.

Other new items included free Ball State University background or wallpaper and Ball State University logo cursors that can be downloaded to a personal computer. Other popular online services included an Alumni Registry that contains an alumni e-mail directory (2,305 participants) as well as the opportunity for alumni to update their addresses; the Alumni Locator Service that allows alumni to inquire as to the whereabouts of other alumni; Class Notes Online that lets alumni submit announcements for publication in the Class Notes section of the Alumnus magazine; and Postcards Online that provides an opportunity for site visitors to send Ball State University electronic greetings. Additionally, a wide array of subject matter was available on the site. Included were: the current issue of the Alumnus magazine as well as archived issues; Cardinal Corner, Inc. merchandise; current event information; career resources; awards and scholarship information with nomination and application forms available for downloading; and information detailing alumni programs and services.

Current plans for expansion and improvement of the site are in motion, specifically to modify the Cardinal Corner, Inc. portion to include a shopping cart that would allow visitors to purchase items securely, online.

INSURANCE PROGRAM

Initiated in May 1997, the insurance program continued to service alumni in need of short-term medical insurance and life insurance policies. At the end of the fiscal year, the cumulative total for the GradGift offered to new graduates was 2,656 offers mailed, 288 acceptors and a 10.8% acceptance rate. The AlumniTerm Life insurance policy offer was mailed to 53,621 alumni in May 2000.

NEW GRADUATE MAILING The new graduate mailing was designed to welcome recent graduates into the alumni ranks, brief them on what the Alumni Association can do for them, and also offer congratulatory gifts from the BSUAA.

Items contained in the packet were a welcome letter, a Garfield brochure, an Alumni File Form, a BSUAA window decal, and gift offers. Gift offers included free address labels and a one-year license plate fee waiver for Indiana residents.

For July '99, December '99, and May '00 graduation classes, a total of 2,922 packets were mailed, and 455 Alumni File Forms returned for a 16% conversion rate. In addition, 54 complimentary license plate offers were accepted.

Cory A. Calvin, Montpelier, Ohio, was named the $1,500 Oliver C. Bumb Award Recipient for 2000. Calvin, who will graduate in 2001, is a finance major and a French minor. He holds an overall grade point average of 3.7 and is currently president of the Student Government Association. He was the 1999 Ball State University Homecoming King. In addition to being active in Cardinal Corps, Calvin is a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Student Leadership Development Board, and the Men's Volleyball Club. He was also co-chairman of the David Letterman "Sign the Card" http://www.bsu.edu/web/alumni/annual_report/2000/awards.html (4 of 5) [07/08/2003 1:22:09 PM] BSUAA 1999-2000 Annual Report, Alumni Awards campaign.

ROBERT E. LINSON Dr. Robert E. Linson, '47MA48, emeritus vice president for University Relations, served Ball State as executive director of the BSUAA for 25 of his 32 years as a campus administrator. Although retired, his interest in and support of Ball State University has not diminished.

Named in his honor, the Linson Scholarship recognizes student involvement in alumni activities by providing a financial award to one who has contributed time and energy to student- and alumni-related programs at the university.

The 1999 recipient of the Linson Scholarship was Lori Pfister, '99. Pfister, a public relations major, was executive assistant/faculty liaison and opening day event chair for the 1999 Homecoming Steering Committee and had coordinated publicity for the 1998 event. The Auburn, Indiana native was also employed by the BSUAA as an undergraduate communications assistant from 1996 through December 1999, when she graduated. She worked as an intern with the U.S. Olympic Committee in Colorado Springs, and was a member of Cardinal Communications, a student-run public relations firm, and Kappa Tau Alpha journalism honor society. Linson presented the award to Pfister at the October 1, 1999, Alumni Awards Dinner in conjunction with Homecoming.
