UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles The Saints of the Crusader States: Legends of the Eastern Mediterranean in Anglo-French Vernacular Culture, 1135-1220 A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies by Cristina Politano 2018 ã Copyright by Cristina Politano 2018 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION The Saints of the Crusader States: Legends of the Eastern Mediterranean in Anglo-French Vernacular Culture, 1135-1220 by Cristina Politano Doctor of Philosophy in French and Francophone Studies University of California, Los Angeles, 2018 Professor Zrinka Stahuljak, Chair A corpus of Anglo-French hagiography composed between 1135 and 1220 tells the lives of Biblical and Late Antique women with origins in the eastern Mediterranean: the Virgin Mary and Mary Magdalene who lived in Jerusalem, Margaret of Antioch, Catherine of Alexandria, and Mary of Egypt. These narratives circulated and gained a popular audience in twelfth- and thirteenth-century Normandy, England, and France. Hagiography scholars have focused on the ways in which vernacular portrayals of female saints reveal medieval ideas of gender; this study evaluates the extent to which ideology is indexed through both the gender and the geographical origin of the saints in question. It considers how the contexts of pilgrimage and crusade offer a new framework for the larger discussion of these texts. What is the nature of the link that twelfth- century Anglo-Norman hagiographers sought to establish with the wider, non-western world? ii An inquiry into the provenance of these legends reveals that their underlying ideology often complicates or contradicts orthodox theological definitions of sainthood elaborated by twelfth- century Christian theologians. -

The Book of Mystical Chapters The Esoteric Spiritual Doctrine of the Early Christian Monks and Ascetical Teachers of the East Translated & Introduced by John Anthony McGuckin 1 The Book of Mystical Chapters The Esoteric Spiritual Doctrine of the Early Christian Monks and Ascetical Teachers of the East Introduction The early Christian monks formed an international society that flourished in all the Greek territories of the late Roman empire, as well as in Syria and Persia, in Egypt gathered around the Nile and as far into Africa as Nubia ( modern Sudan) and the highlands of Ethiopia. They inhabited the rocky and desert terrain of Sinai, Palestine, Arabia, and Cappadocian Turkey; and in the great capital of the late Roman Empire, Const- antinople, they became almost a civil service, so great were their numbers, with many dedicated scholars and aristocrats among them. After the fifth century the monastic phenomenon became descriptive of Western Christianity too, where Gaul (ancient France) and Italy became centres of Latin monasticism. Everywhere in the ancient Christian world that the four major languages, Greek, Latin, Syriac or Coptic, were spoken, Christian monks could be found living in solitary isolation near villages, in small communes of hermits gathered together in remote valleys, or in small houses, usually of a few dozen living the communal life together. These three forms of monastic lifestyle in the Early Church had become standard by the fourth century of the common era, and after Constantine had begun the transformation of the Roman State into the Christian Empire of Byzantium, the monastic movement flourished for more than a thousand years more with the patronage of Christian emperors. -

18 Chapter 1 Julian in Context The contemporary rediscovery of the fourteenth‐century anchoress, Julian of Norwich, as an important mystical writer, theological thinker, and spiritual teacher has inevitably led to a great deal of speculation about her origins and life. Whatever the long‐term value of Julian’s teach- ings, no mystical or theological writing exists on some ideal plane removed from the historical circumstances in which it arose.1 Julian’s possible background and her historical context affect our con- temporary interpretation of what she wrote. Without some awareness of her context, it is all too easy to make Julian an honorary member of our own times or to pick and choose the aspects of her writings that appeal to us or to make overall judgments about her without seeking to honor what she herself intended to communicate in her writings. Who was Julian? Who Julian was, her social background, her education, her life experience prior to becoming an anchoress, when she became an anchoress – even where she was born – are all matters of speculation. The name “Julian” by which she is known is also likely to have been an adopted one. It was quite common for medieval anchorites and anchoresses to assume the name of the church to which their anchorhold (or cell) was physically attached. In COPYRIGHTEDthe case of Julian of Norwich, her MATERIALanchorhold was next to the parish church of St Julian Timberhill in Norwich which survives in reconstructed form to this day. The church has been known by that name since the tenth century but it is not absolutely clear to which St Julian it is dedicated. -

CODA PARTICIPATING IN SYMBOLS OF DEATH Like Nicholas Love’s Mirror, The Somonyng of Everyman is adapted from a Continental text, in this case from the Dutch Elckerlijc. As reading matter designed to appeal to the merchant and artisan classes in an urban setting, Everyman invokes neither pastoral nor monastic contemplation but rather invites participation through an imaginative confrontation with Death and subsequent pilgrimage leading to entry into the grave. The study of Everyman in terms of participation in the symbols of death and dying can serve as an appropriate capstone to the present volume, hence originally intended to be a final chapter. In this dissertation I argue that these romances individually use graphic violence as a means of coping with late medieval English anxieties about Christian failures abroad and rising English heresy at home; together, along with the devotional texts surrounding them, they become examples of violent devotional expression. Whether studied alone or as a group, in these romances violence in the name of Christian devotion is imagined as both necessary and praiseworthy. Each romance fundamentally employs violence to reveal Christian and, at times, specifically English Christian dominance over a threatening group or ideology. At the same time, by repeatedly using violence as a marker of devotion, but portraying it as at the service of Church orthodoxy, these romances create boundaries, containing and directing the violence towards real political and ideological goals: the perpetuation of the orthodox Church in England. Finally, I argue that the graphic violence that so marks the three romances found in the opening section of the London Thornton manuscript is normalized and contained by the orthodox religious boundaries provided by the ii devotional texts surrounding them. -

Phenomenal Anglo-Saxons: Perception, Adaptation, and the Poetic Imagination by Peter David Buchanan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Peter David Buchanan 2013 Phenomenal Anglo-Saxons: Perception, Adaptation, and the Poetic Imagination Peter David Buchanan Doctor of Philosophy Centre for Medieval Studies University of Toronto 2013 Abstract This dissertation articulates a theory of adaptation for the Anglo-Saxon literature in which metaphors of embodiment mediate the reception of poetic works: when we read, our bodies get in the way. Central to my work is the understanding that the embodied situatedness of poets adapting materials from other sources informs the literature that they produce. I explore the material and textual conditions through which the writings of the period reveal themselves and seek to understand how these contexts shaped the reception of earlier writings. Poetic texts filled with sensory detail provide a framework for their own reception. My approach to textual phenomena is informed by reading in the phenomenological tradition of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, as expressed by the work of philosophers such as Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Gaston Bachelard, Hans-Georg Gadamer, and Jean-Luc Marion. Chapter One argues for a parallel relationship between the flesh of Christ and the medieval book in the reception of Prudentius. Their shared flesh allows the Word to appear in the world by taking on the animal nature of a life characterized by suffering. ii Chapter Two considers the suffering of the saints in Aldhelm’s Carmen de virginitate. -

Theoretical and Pragmatic Dialogics in and through Nicholas Love’s Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ Ian Johnson Nicholas Love’s Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ (before 1410) is a remarkably important Middle English translation of one of the most internationally successful lives of Christ of the later Middle Ages, the pseudo-Bonaventuran Meditationes vitae Christi. This accomplished meditative life was publically mandated by the ultra-orthodox Archbishop of Canterbury Thomas Arundel as a set text for the nation and for the confutation of heretics. The Archbishop would doubtless have particularly approved of how Love interpolates anti- Lollard polemic and copious mainstream exposition of the theology of the Eucharist into his text. Extant in more manuscripts than any Middle English religious prose work other than the Wycliffite Bible, the Mirror was printed nine times before 1535, and has been republished in every century since, including the twenty-first century.1 Textual variants across the different 1 Nicholas Love, The Mirror of the Blessed Life of Jesus Christ, ed. by Michael G.
