Additionally, our institution is member of IPEN (International Plant Exchange Network). The IPEN Code of Conduct with regards to seeds/plant exchange is applicable for non-commercial use only. IPEN membership allows exchange with other IPEN members without bilateral agreement. So IPEN members may order seeds and other plant material either by email or by ordinary mail. Only IPEN members may order by email. For a list of current IPEN-members check the web-site of Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) at www.bgci.org/resources/ipen. Non-IPEN members can only order if the desiderata is accompanied by a signed and stamped agreement on the supply of living plant material for non-commercial purposes, therefore they cannot order by email. The agreement must be signed by authorized staff when plant material will be used for botanical gardens, or by the head of the project or research line for scientific purposes.

Best Practice Implementation • All regional landscape boards and Green Adelaide to enforce the prohibition on sale of white weeping broom. • Regional landscape boards in the active control areas to inspect, map and monitor infestations of white weeping broom in coastal and native vegetation. • Regional landscape boards in the active control areas to ensure high priority infestations on private or public land are controlled.

    Final Report Final pre-release investigations of the gorse thrips (Sericothrips staphylinus) as a biocontrol agent for gorse (Ulex europaeus) in North America Date: August 31, 2012 Award Number: 10-CA-11420004-184 Report Period: June 1, 2010– May 31, 2012 Project Period: June 1, 2010– May 31, 2012 Recipient: Oregon State University Recipient Contact Person: Fritzi Grevstad Principal Investigator/ Project Director: Fritzi Grevstad Introduction Gorse (Ulex europaeus) is an environmental weed classified as noxious in the states of Washington, Oregon, California, and Hawaii. A classical biological control program has been applied in Hawaii with the introduction of 4 gorse-feeding arthropods, but only two of these (a mite and a seed weevil) have been introduced to the mainland U.S. The two insects that have not yet been introduced include the gorse thrips, Sericothips staphylinus (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and the moth Agonopterix umbellana (Lepidoptera: Oecophoridae). With prior support from the U.S. Forest Service (joint venture agreement # 07-JV-281), we were able to complete host specificity testing of S. staphylinus on 44 North American plant species that were on the original test plant list. However, following review of the proposed Test Plant List, the Technical Advisory Group on Biocontrol of Weeds (TAG) recommended that we include an additional 18 plant species for testing. In this report, we present host specificity testing and related objectives necessary to bring the program to the implementation stage. Objectives (1) Acquire and grow the additional 18 species of plants recommended by the TAG. (2) Complete host specificity trials for the gorse thrips on the 18 plant species.

    Cytisus scoparius (L.) J.H.F. Link Scotch Broom (Genista andreana, Genista scoparia, Sarothamnus scoparius, Sarothamnus vulgaris, Spartium scoparium) Other Common Names: Broomtops, Common Broom, European Broom, Irish Broom, Scottish Broom. Family: Fabaceae (Leguminosae); sometimes placed in Papilionaceae . Cold Hardiness: USDA zones 6 (5) to 7 (8). Foliage: Alternate, semi-evergreen to deciduous, trifoliate (mostly) to simple (tips of some twigs) leaves are small, ¼O to eO long, medium to dark green in color, but covered in open whitish pubescence, lending a frosted appearance to the margins; no significant fall color develops. Flower: Flowering occurs in spring from buds on old wood with one or two bright yellow :O to 1O diameter indi- vidual flowers; the back petal is the largest and is bilobed; this petal may be yellow (most common color), pink, orangish red, to red outside; flowers are numerous and very showy in bloom. Fruit: Small seeds are borne in 1½O to 2O long pea pod-like explosively dehiscent fuzzy capsules; pods mature from green to tan-brown at maturity, but are not ornamentally effective. Stem / Bark: Stems — young stems are thin, stiff and held erect in a wisp-broom fashion; young and intermediate stems are square in cross-section; new growth is covered in a sparse white pubescence which is slowly lost as the twigs mature; the bark is initially bright green, becoming mottled white and brown as twigs age; Buds — 1 1 nearly foliose with poorly formed bud scales, the tiny /32O to /16O long roundish green buds are tightly ap- pressed to the stems; Bark — bark changes as stems age from green on new twigs, mottled green and brown on older twigs, to striated green and brown on young limbs, to smooth greenish gray to brownish gray on older trunks.

Koch Common name: French broom, canary broom, cape broom, Montpellier broom, soft broom Family: Fabaceae Legal Status: Proposed Class A noxious weed Description and Variation: (Unless otherwise noted, information in this section is from DiTomaso and Healy (2007). Overall Habit: Genista monspessulana is a shrub in the Fabaceae (legume) family that typically grows less than 3 m (10 feet) tall but sometimes grows to 5 m (16 feet) tall (Baldwin et al. 2012, Bossard 2000). Plants can be evergreen or deciduous; in California G. monspessulana keeps much of its leaves in coastal areas and loses more of its leaves in inland areas (Bossard 2000). Stems are erect, typically leafy and covered in silky, silvery hairs (Baldwin et al. 2012, Stace 2010). Younger stems are green and round in cross-section and often strongly 8-10 ridged, while older stems are brown and may not have ridges. Roots: Genista monspessulana is a taprooted shrub that has fine roots associated with nitrogen-fixing bacteria. Leaves: Leaves are alternately arranged with a petiole (<5mm) and compound with 3 leaflets (Baldwin et al. 2012). Leaflets are oblong to obovate and variable in size with most 10-20 mm long, with the length generally +/- 2 times the width (Baldwin et al. 2012). The leaf’s upper and lower surface is sparsely to densely covered with appressed short, silvery hairs.

Objectives • High priority infestations of Cape broom in the control areas controlled. • Larger infestations in these areas contained. • No further spread of Cape broom to currently uninfested areas. Their isolation has given rise to many endemic species and subspecies, of which the great views of Tenerife Blue Chaffinch in perfect light were a highlight for many. We marvelled over the flora, so different to that of mainland Europe, and enjoyed the various species of lizards, plus the butterflies and other invertebrates we encountered. The day on La Gomera was a delight, not least for the numbers of Cory’s Shearwaters, whales and dolphins, plus the White-faced Storm Petrels we encountered. Lovely weather with plenty of sunshine, comfortable accommodation, good food and great company all made for an excellent week. Day 1 Saturday 23rd February Fly to Tenerife South – La Chafiras – Road to Vilaflor Fifteen tour group members met with Andrew and Jessica at Gatwick’s North Terminal for the 6.50am Easyjet flight to Tenerife South Airport. After a bit of a delay due to fog at Gatwick, we landed on the island at around 12.15pm, meeting up with our last group member, who had arrived on the island the previous day.

OBJECTIVES • To reduce the impact of weeds on farm productivity and profitability by developing sustainable management programs that optimize the integration of chemical, bio- logical and ecological approaches for annual crop and pasture systems in the crop- ping zone of southern Australia. • To develop practical integrated weed management systems that reduce weed infes- tation, protect the environment and enhance sustainability and productivity of Aus- tralian temperate perennial pasture ecosystems. • To develop integrated strategies for the sustainable management of weeds invading natural ecosystems in temperate Australia, in order to maintain biological diversity of native flora and fauna and to prevent further degradation of natural habitats. • To implement a suite of weed science and weed management education programs which, for the first time in Australia, offers a coordinated approach to educating undergraduates, postgraduates, professional land and natural resource managers, and the community.
