Shakers and Jerkers: Letters from the “Long Walk,” 1805, Part 1 By Douglas L. Winiarski*a Reports of a bizarre new religious phenomenon made their way over the mountains from Tennessee during the summer and fall of 1804. For several years, readers in the eastern states had been eagerly consuming news of the Great Revival, the powerful succession of Presbyterian sacramental festivals and Methodist camp meetings that played a formative role in the development of the southern Bible Belt and the emergence of early American evangelicalism. Letters from the frontier frequently included vivid descriptions of the so-called “falling exercise,” in which the bodies of revival converts crumpled to the ground during powerful sermon performances on the terrors of hell. But an article that appeared in the Virginia Argus on October 24, 1804, announced the sudden emergence of a deeply troubling new form of convulsive somatic distress. -

Corrupt Bargain" Charge Against Clay and Adams
THE "CORRUPT BARGAIN" CHARGE AGAINST CLAY AND ADAMS: AN HISTORIOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS BY WILLIAM G. MORGAN Oral Roberts University Tulsa, Oklahoma The election of 1824 provided a substantial portion of the ground- work for the notable political changes which emerged from the some- what misnamed "Era of Good Feelings," while at the same time involv- ing several unusual political phenomena. A cardinal feature of this electoral struggle was the large number of prominent candidates. Early in the contest the serious contenders totaled as many as "16 or 17," in- cluding William H. Crawford, Secretary of the Treasury; John Quincy Adams, Secretary of State; Henry Clay, long-time Speaker of the House; John C. Calhoun, Secretary of War; Smith Thompson, Secretary of the Navy; Vice-President Daniel D. Tompkins; Governor DeWitt Clinton of New York; Representative William Lowndes of South Carolina; and a comparative latecomer to politics, General Andrew Jackson] As the campaign progressed, several of these men dropped from conten- tion: Lowndes died in 1822, while Thompson, Tompkins, and Clinton fell from the ranks for lack of support, though there was mention of the latter's possible candidacy late in 1823.2 Calhoun subsequently withdrew from the race, deciding to delay his bid for the presidency to accept the second office.8 Of the prominent contenders remaining in the contest, Crawford was the administration favorite, and his position as Treasury Secretary had enabled him to build a significant following in various circles.4 Despite these advantages, Crawford's success proved illusory: among other difficulties, the Georgian suffered a severe stroke in the summer of 1823 and was the victim of the growing antagonism toward the caucus, the very insti- nation on which he was relying to bring him broad party support.5 Adams, Clay, and Jackson fought actively to secure an electoral majority or, failing that, to gain sufficient votes to be included in the top three who would be presented to the House of Representatives for the final decision. -

While Brazil was recognized as a place where “colour is no obstacle to advancement” (CHRISTIE, 1865, 78), the United States witnessed the emergence of the belief that “the races cannot live together in a state of freedom” (WEBB, 1853). Considering that context, the fortuitous encounter of a New York Times article from 1862 aroused my curiosity for it reported a project to transplant Afro- descendants from the United States to the Brazilian Amazon. Such a project remained virtually ignored by the Brazilian historiography, except for the book published by Nícia Vilela Luz in 1968, denouncing the American intentions to colonize the Amazon. Although the so-called “negro colonization” project never yielded an official proposition to the Brazilian government, it still deserves examination. I argue that, in the present context of global exchanges and migrations, this historical event gains new relevance. The intention of transferring an entire category of the population from one national territory to another raises questions about citizenship and national sovereignty. At the same time, it opens the opportunity for a transnational approach that can illuminate otherwise unseen aspects of migrations. Keywords: Black colonization. -

Objectives A. Examine historical information from a variety of sources, including museum and library collections, letters, maps, government documents, oral histories, firsthand accounts, and web sites. B. Analyze documentation to uncover the events of the Presidential Election of 1824. C. Understand, through dialogue and discussion, how the Presidential Election of 1824 reflected the political climate of the era, its effect on John Quincy Adams’ presidency, and the future of American politics. Background A former cabinet member and Senator. The Speaker of the House of Representatives. A well-travelled international diplomat and the son of a Founding Father. An Indian- fighter, duelist, and powerhouse in Western politics. The Election of 1824 was the first election to that time in which there was not a majority of votes earned by a candidate. As a result, the election moved to the House of Representatives, where each state received one vote. John Quincy Adams, despite being outgained by almost 40,000 votes, won the presidency, and the campaign for the election of 1828 began almost immediately after claims from Jackson supporters alleged a “corrupt bargain” between Adams and Speaker of the House Henry Clay. -

Lincoln Studies at the Bicentennial: A Round Table Lincoln Theme 2.0 Matthew Pinsker Early during the 1989 spring semester at Harvard University, members of Professor Da- vid Herbert Donald’s graduate seminar on Abraham Lincoln received diskettes that of- fered a glimpse of their future as historians. The 3.5 inch floppy disks with neatly typed labels held about a dozen word-processing files representing the whole of Don E. Feh- renbacher’s Abraham Lincoln: A Documentary Portrait through His Speeches and Writings (1964). Donald had asked his secretary, Laura Nakatsuka, to enter this well-known col- lection of Lincoln writings into a computer and make copies for his students. He also showed off a database containing thousands of digital note cards that he and his research assistants had developed in preparation for his forthcoming biography of Lincoln.1 There were certainly bigger revolutions that year. The Berlin Wall fell. A motley coalition of Afghan tribes, international jihadists, and Central Intelligence Agency (cia) operatives drove the Soviets out of Afghanistan. Virginia voters chose the nation’s first elected black governor, and within a few more months, the Harvard Law Review selected a popular student named Barack Obama as its first African American president. Yet Donald’s ven- ture into digital history marked a notable shift. The nearly seventy-year-old Mississippi native was about to become the first major Lincoln biographer to add full-text searching and database management to his research arsenal. More than fifty years earlier, the revisionist historian James G. Randall had posed a question that helps explain why one of his favorite graduate students would later show such a surprising interest in digital technology as an aging Harvard professor. -

THE Pennsylvania Magazine OF HISTORY AND BIOGRAPHY Dr. Benjamin Rush's Journal of a Trip to Carlisle in 1784 YOU know I love to be in the way of adding to my stock of ideas upon all subjects," Benjamin Rush observed to his wife in a letter of 1787. An insatiable gatherer and recorder of facts and observations, Rush kept journals throughout his life—some continuously over many years, like his Commonplace Books recently edited by Dr. George W. Corner as part of Rush's Autobiography; others for brief periods or for special purposes, like his "Quack Recipe Book" in the Library Company of Philadelphia, his Scottish journal in the Indiana University Library, and the present little diary of a journey from Philadelphia to Carlisle and return in April, 1784. This diary consists of twenty-three duodecimo pages stitched at one edge, and is written entirely in Rush's hand. Owned by a suc- cession of Rush's descendants, it at length came to light in the sale of the Alexander Biddle Papers at the Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York in 1943. (It will be found listed in the Biddle Sale Cata- logue, Part I, lot 219.) It was then purchased by the late Josiah C. Trent, M.D., of Durham, North Carolina, who, when he learned that the present writer was investigating Rush's part in the founding of Dickinson College at Carlisle, very kindly furnished a photostatic 443 444 L. ABRAHAM LINCOLN AND THE RULE OF LAW BOOKS MARK E. STEINER* We associate Abraham Lincoln with books more than any other president except, perhaps, Thomas Jefferson.1 But Jefferson’s association with books creates more distance, while Lincoln’s draws us closer.2 Lincoln’s reading is linked to self-betterment and personal growth.3 Lincoln is also seen as reader as a boy and a young man, not as an adult. Yet reading would pervade his life. I. THE FATHER OF THE MAN AND LINCOLN IN NEW SALEM The most popular cultural images of Lincoln as reader are his reading as a boy in Indiana and as a young man in New Salem. The image of Lincoln reading by fireside was popularized by Eastman 4 Johnson’s 1868 painting, Boyhood of Lincoln. -

From a Radio Address Delivered November 14, 1935. Page 373 The State of Oklahoma was admitted to the Union 28 years ago. Spaniards led by Coronado traversed what is now the State of Oklahoma 67 years before the first English settlement in Virginia and 79 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. All of the land now in Oklahoma except a little strip known as the panhandle was acquired by the United States from France in the Louisiana Purchase. Early in the nineteenth century the United States moved the five civilized tribes, the Cherokees, Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, and Seminoles, from southeastern states to lands west of the Mississippi River, the title to which was transferred to the tribes in exchange for part of their lands in the East.
