After Sébah’s death, his brother Cosimi and nephew Jean took over the firm. They eventually went into partnership with Policarpe Joallier, changing the name to Sébah and Joailler. Scope and Content of Collection The albumen photographs in this collection taken from 1865-1875 depict views of the Turkish city of Bursa and its monuments. Located across the sea of Marmara from Istanbul, Bursa was the first capital of the Ottoman Empire. Included are six panoramic views of the city, interior and exterior views of the Ulu Cami, Yesil and Murad I mosques, the Yildirim Beyazit mosque and tomb, and the tombs of Cem Sultan, Mehmed I, and Osman Bey. Also included is one photograph with the handwritten caption "Fontaine dans le vieux palais du Serail," by an unidentified photographer. The photographs appear to be part of a mock-up for an illustrated book. For additional photographs bearing numbers sequential to those in this collection see Special Collections accession no. 2004.R.44 (Views of Asia Minor). The sixteen photographs are pasted on eight mounts, recto and verso, numbered 191-206. Most of the photographs are captioned, numbered, and signed in the negative in French. Additional French captions, either handwritten or typeset, are pasted on the mounts below the images. Titles are from captions in the negatives, except where noted. • The Making of Sultan Süleyman: a Study of Process/Es of Image-Making and Reputation Management
THE MAKING OF SULTAN SÜLEYMAN: A STUDY OF PROCESS/ES OF IMAGE-MAKING AND REPUTATION MANAGEMENT by NEV ĐN ZEYNEP YELÇE Submitted to the Institute of Social Sciences in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in History Sabancı University June, 2009 © Nevin Zeynep Yelçe 2009 All Rights Reserved To My Dear Parents Ay şegül and Özer Yelçe ABSTRACT THE MAKING OF SULTAN SÜLEYMAN: A STUDY OF PROCESS/ES OF IMAGE-MAKING AND REPUTATION MANAGEMENT Yelçe, Nevin Zeynep Ph.D., History Supervisor: Metin Kunt June 2009, xv+558 pages This dissertation is a study of the processes involved in the making of Sultan Süleyman’s image and reputation within the two decades preceding and following his accession, delineating the various phases and aspects involved in the making of the multi-layered image of the Sultan. Handling these processes within the framework of Sultan Süleyman’s deeds and choices, the main argument of this study is that the reputation of Sultan Süleyman in the 1520s was the result of the convergence of his actions and his projected image. In the course of this study, main events of the first ten years of Sultan Süleyman’s reign are conceptualized in order to understand the elements employed first in making a Sultan out of a Prince, then in maintaining and enhancing the sultanic image and authority. As such, this dissertation examines the rhetorical, ceremonial, and symbolic devices which came together to build up a public image for the Sultan. Contextualized within a larger framework in terms of both time and space, not only the meaning and role of each device but the way they are combined to create an image becomes clearer.

  • The Urbanization and Ottomanization of the Halvetiye Sufi Order by the City of Amasya in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries
The City as a Historical Actor: The Urbanization and Ottomanization of the Halvetiye Sufi Order by the City of Amasya in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries By Hasan Karatas A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Hamid Algar, Chair Professor Leslie Peirce Professor Beshara Doumani Professor Wali Ahmadi Spring 2011 The City as a Historical Actor: The Urbanization and Ottomanization of the Halvetiye Sufi Order by the City of Amasya in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries ©2011 by Hasan Karatas Abstract The City as a Historical Actor: The Urbanization and Ottomanization of the Halvetiye Sufi Order by the City of Amasya in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries by Hasan Karatas Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Hamid Algar, Chair This dissertation argues for the historical agency of the North Anatolian city of Amasya through an analysis of the social and political history of Islamic mysticism in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries Ottoman Empire. The story of the transmission of the Halvetiye Sufi order from geographical and political margins to the imperial center in both ideological and physical sense underlines Amasya’s contribution to the making of the socio-religious scene of the Ottoman capital at its formative stages. The city exerted its agency as it urbanized, “Ottomanized” and catapulted marginalized Halvetiye Sufi order to Istanbul where the Ottoman socio-religious fabric was in the making. This study constitutes one of the first broad-ranging histories of an Ottoman Sufi order, as a social group shaped by regional networks of politics and patronage in the formative fifteenth and sixteenth centuries.

  • New Byzantinist Title by Dimitri J. Kastritsis
H-Medieval New Byzantinist Title by Dimitri J. Kastritsis Discussion published by Emily Felton on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 New Book Announcement from Liverpool University Press An Early Ottoman History Dimitri J. Kastritsis The manuscript translated here contains one of the most important texts for understanding the development of early Ottoman historiography in the fifteenth century. The so-called Oxford Anonymous chronicle is a comprehensive history of the Ottoman dynasty in Turkish, compiled from various sources to tell the story of the dynasty from its rise to the year 1484 (AH 889). Like several other histories produced around the same time, some of which it influenced, it presents the Ottomans in the context of wider Islamic history and contains a coherent argument for their superiority over other dynasties. The manuscript had previously belonged to the Dutch orientalist Jacob Golius (d. 1667). Although its history is largely unknown, it was probably a presentation copy made for Sultan Bayezid II (r. 1481–1512). The work itself is a product of Bayezid’s patronage, and shows a strong preoccupation with the perennial Ottoman problem of dynastic succession. Fully one third of the manuscript contains an older text recounting in epic terms the struggles of Mehmed I against his brothers (1402–13). The obvious explanation is that when Oxford Anonymous was compiled, Bayezid II was also facing a rival claimant to the throne, his brother Cem Sultan (d. 1495). Dimitri J. Kastritsis discusses Ottoman history and The Oxford Anonymous Chronicle on our blog! Dr. Dimitri J. Kastritsis is Lecturer in Ottoman History at the University of St Andrews Translated Texts for Byzantinists HB: 9781786940681 | RRP £75.00 December 2017 | 272pp.

LOWRY- İSMAiL ERtlNSAL THE JOURNAL OF OTTOMAN STUDIES, X İstanbul-199 0 A NOTE ON «CHRISTIAN» PREACHERS IN THE . OTTOMAN EMPIRE Colin IMBER One of the most striking passages in Franz Babinger's study of events surraunding the Varna Crusade of 1444, is a quotation from the Iate fifteenth-century Cronaca Zancaruola, canceming ! the execution in Edirne of a Persian preacher who «went about \ ardently preaching ~he Faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, and that · the law of Muhammad is a bestial law.ıı 1 The anonymous chronic ler clearly associated the martyrdarn of the preacher and his fal lawers With the imminence of the Varna Crusade, since he appen ded it to a desetiption of the panic among the Turks when, in 1444, <cnews was heard from Hungary that a huge quantity of men were preparing to go and join the Christian army.ıı In an inspired interpretaiion of this passage, Babinger linked it with a, story in Taşköprüzade~s Shaka'ik al Nu,'n'Winiyya (1556) about the (1556) execution of a hur.utı who had· won the canfidence of Mehmed II. Babinger postulated . that Taşköprüzade's story refers to the period of Mehmed's fiı·st Sultanate (1444- 1446), .and that the «Persianıı of the Italian chronicle was in fact nqt a Christian, but the hurü{i whose fate Taşköprüzade describes. · Babingeı:'s hypothesis is very convincing. ComJ:?ining .as it does the two stereotyped Christian themes of martyrdarn and the canversion of Muslims, it is difficult to accept the story in the Italian chronicle· as a simple statement of fact.

  • Three Balkan Novels About East and West. the Damned Yard by Ivo Andrich, the Case of Cem by Vera Mutafchieva, and the White Castle by Orhan Pamuk
1 THREE BALKAN NOVELS ABOUT EAST AND WEST. THE DAMNED YARD BY IVO ANDRICH, THE CASE OF CEM BY VERA MUTAFCHIEVA, AND THE WHITE CASTLE BY ORHAN PAMUK Evdokia Borisova, (Konstantin Preslavski University of Shumen) Abstract: The paper puts forward the hypothesis of the succession between two contemporary Balkan writers. The common theme of meeting and clash of cultures links the plots and characters of the three novels which are set far apart in time and space (The Damned yard by Ivo Andrich, The Case of Cem by Vera Mutafchieva and The White Castle by Orhan Pamuk). Otherness and doubleness of the literary paired images (in Mutafchieva - Cem Sultan and the Persian poet Saadi, and in Pamuk – Hodja and Venetian), have their main cultural and existential projections. Passing through the hardships of those social (and cognitive!) spheres, the characters, in the words of Fernand Braudel, depart again to the extinguished flame of „the Arabian East”, this time helped by the West. Braudel comes into conflict with Huntington’s clash of civilizations thesis. The novels convey the idea that that culture is rather a product of borrowing and assimilation than of differences and clashes. It is here, in the Balkans, that a rare fusion of different cultures exists between the Slavic, Albanian, Greek, Armenian, Jewish, Seljuk and Arab-Persian culture on the one hand, and the culture of the Western civilization – on the other. The novel of Vera Mutafchieva explicates fictionally Braudel’s idea that civilization depends on the rulers, on the enlightened despots. More than a decade later the same idea was employed in Orhan Pamuk’s The White Castle.

  • Concerning the Flight of Cem Sultan (1481-82) (MSR VI, 2002)
RALPH S. HATTOX HAMPDEN-SYDNEY COLLEGE Qa≠ytba≠y's Diplomatic Dilemma Concerning the Flight of Cem Sultan (1481–82) In the spring of 1482, for the second time in as many years, the forces mustered in Anatolia by the Ottoman prince Cem Sultan proved inadequate to wrest the throne from his brother Bayezid. The defeated prince took to flight, eventually finding refuge with the Knights of St. John at Rhodes. His subsequent career as a pawn of European diplomacy, a cudgel with which various Christian potentates could threaten Bayezid into good behavior, is of course of great interest to those studying the dynamics of Ottoman-Latin relations and, indirectly, to the historian of the Mamluks. In the increasingly complex world of Eastern Mediterranean diplomacy, few events were of purely bilateral interest. It is not Cem's European career, however, that we shall concern ourselves with in this article, but rather the events of the preceding year. For in the events of fall 1481 through spring 1482 lay what may well have been the final, crowning insult in the steady deterioration of relations between Istanbul and Cairo—the refuge given by the Mamluk sultan Qa≠ytba≠y to Cem Sultan after his first defeat. Contrary to the interpretation of historians such as Gaston Wiet,1 relations had hardly been cordial in the immediately preceding years. Propinquity always seemed to strain relations, and as far back as the reign of Yıldırım Bayezid I (1389–1402), whose conquests in Anatolia brought the frontiers of the two states ever closer, Cairo had looked with some concern at the activities of their parvenu neighbor.
